Two  things  we  needed  at  the  outset:    1.  Clear,  biologically  relevant  standards  to  guide  data  acquisi-on  and  distribu-on.  

2.  A  strong  sense  of  effec-ve,  community-­‐based  digi-za-on  workflows  and  prac-ces.

MISC  Goals  

The  product  of  the  MISC  working  group  was  designed  to:  •  provide  detail  to  the  data  model,  •  reflect  a  biologist’s  or  collec-on  manager’s  perspec-ve,  •  ensure  that  all  data  currently  or  poten-ally  stored  in  collec-ons  

databases  are  accounted  for,  •  evolve  over  -me,  •  Priori-ze  data  elements  as  required,  highly  desired,  or  supplementary,  •  take  a  scien-fic  perspec-ve  on  data  fitness,  •  start  with  Darwin  Core  as  a  founda-on  and  augment  from  other  

schemas  where  necessary,  •  map  MISC  to  exis-ng  schemas.

Launched  the  Interna-onal  Whole-­‐Drawer  Digi-za-on  Interest  Group  in  collabora+on  with  partners  at  CSIRO  (Australia),  with  representa+ves  from  the  U.S.,  The  Netherlands,  Germany,  the  United  Kingdom,  and  Australia.    

Launched  the  Biodiversity  Informa-cs  Managers  Working  Group  to  focus  on  the  role  of  biodiversity  informa+cs  manager  as  an  essen+al  component  underpinning  the  successful  digi+za+on  enterprise,  including  the  defini+on  and  delinea+on  of  career  path  dimensions,  skill  sets,  academic  training  requirements,  and  recommenda+ons  about  the  placement  of  this  role  within  the  organiza+onal  structure  of  museums  and  academic  ins+tu+ons.
