Comparison Oracle and Microsoft SQL Must of organization implements data bases on their system’s architecture. All of them specs
different need and processes that they want to be able to accomplish in less time and cost. Today we are comparing 2 of the biggest data base companies, oracle and Microsoft.
An Oracle database is a collection of data treated as a unit. The purpose of the database is to store information and be available for when requests are needed. A database server is needed to store this information and help solve the problems of information management. An Oracle database uses the Oracle SQL programming language to manipulate and manage the database.
Oracle database has had different versions over the years and the current is 12c it also offers different editions that fit each company’s needs for example:
Edition Overview Benefits Price Support Multitenant • Simplified database
consolidation at a greater density
• Multitenant architecture in the database tier rather than the application tier for SaaS requirements
• Increase scalability and server utilization
• Manage many databases as one
$350 $77
Enterprise • Benefits customers deploying private database clouds and SaaS vendors looking for the power of Oracle database in a secure and isolated multitenant model.
• Automatic Data Optimization features efficiently manage more data, lower storage costs, and improve database performance
• Defense-‐in-‐depth database security addresses evolving threats and stringent data privacy regulations
$950 $209
Standard • Support for one pluggable database for entry-‐level cloud computing and consolidation
• Cross-‐platform recovery • Simplified installation and
configuration
• Save by buying only what you need today, and scale as needed with Oracle Real Application Clusters
$350 $77

We personally have had the experience to work with Oracle SQL Databases before and it’s been great. It’s really to use and understand and we’ve been able to implement it on our projects with great results.
Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft. As a database, it is a software product whose primary function is to store and retrieve data as requested by other software applications, be it those on the same computer or those running on another computer across a network.
Microsoft SQL has had different versions over the years and the current is 12c it also offers different editions that fit each company’s needs for example:
Edition Overview Benefits Price Support Enterprice • SQL Server 2012 Enterprise
delivers comprehensive high-‐end datacenter capabilities for demanding database and business intelligence requirements. The Enterprise edition provides the highest service and performance levels for mission critical workloads on a comprehensive data platform.
• Available licensing models per core
• Channel availability o Volume o 3rd party hosting
$6,874 per core

Buisness Intelligence
• SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence delivers a comprehensive platform empowering organizations to build and deploy secure, scalable and manageable BI solutions.
• Available licensing models server+cal
• Channel availability o Volume o 3rd party hosting o FPP
$8,592 per server

edition is an entry-‐level, free database that is ideal for learning and building desktop and small server data-‐driven applications.

Comparisons On both sites they compare themselves with their competitors. According to Microsoft the mention that oracle doesn’t have:
• Mission critical performance Scalability and high availability • Self-‐service business intelligence tools out-‐of-‐the-‐box • Flexible deployment across on-‐premise, private and public cloud • Native integration with Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft office • More secure • Developer productivity • Total cost for ownership
Talking about the scalability oracle mentions on their site about “Transparent application scalability”. Also on the oracle site you can find a whole document dedicated on the comparison with Microsoft SQL. They mentions that Microsoft is lack of so many things. Some of them is that Microsoft doesn’t have:
• Built in database failure detection • Partial backup strategy • Clone database over the network • Active clustering • Online add, drop exchange and move partitions • Recycle bin • Automatic restore
Here is a little pros and cons of each company
Company Pros Cons Oracle • Use it on multiple
operating systems • Advance clustering • Technology grouping • Powerful language of
SQL
• Vulnerabilities on security
• More expensive

Microsoft products. • Reference of big
companies. • Expirience • Ware housing • Easy to install and
manage
• Doesn’t run on Linux and Mac
• Cant create functions
Why not compare them with MYSQL? As a matter of fact, for coding they're now compiling their PHP down to C++ code using HipHopPHP and about 90% of their servers are running the C++ binaries instead of the PHP scripts. Their MySQL database might save them a dime or two, but the costs to maintain it, scale it, etc. is extremely intense. A product like Oracle or Microsoft however would really allow you to scale seamlessly compared to MySQL.
As far as we can see and we now oracle have many more features for less price. But is hard to compare them because every organizations have different needs and different values prepositions that’s why some times Oracle might not be the right options for some customers. Someone might want more features and some other might want to reduce cost.
