Definition

‐ The graphical representation of information and data; by using visual elements like, charts, graphs and moods; tools provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers and patterns in data.

‐ Simply put it is the communication of data in a visual manner or turning raw data into insights that can easily be interpreted by an audience.

Types of Data Visualization

‐ Temporal‐ Hierarchical‐ Network ‐ Multidimensional‐ Geospatial

Temporal

‐ Must satisfy 2 conditions : ‐ Must be linear‐ Must be one dimensional

‐ Examples:‐ Scatter Plots, Timelines,

Line Graphs, etc.

Hierarchical

‐ These are best used if clusters of information is going to be displayed.

‐ These are a little harder to read.

‐ Examples: Tree Diagrams, Ring Charts and Sunburst Diagrams

Network

‐ These datasets connect genuinely with other datasets.

‐ Shows relationships between datasets without wordy explanations.

‐ Examples: Matrix charts, Node-link diagrams, Word Clouds, etc.

Multidimensional

- There is always 2 or more variables in the mix to create a 3D data visualizations.

- These data visualizations are the most vibrant and eye-catching.

- Examples: Venn Diagrams, Scatter Plots , Pie Charts, etc.

Geospatial

- These data visualizations relate to real life physical locations , overlaying familiar maps with different data points.

‐ Examples: Flow Map, Density Map, Cartogram, etc.
