I Data transmission occurs between a transmitter andreceiver via some medium

I Communication is in form of electromagnetic waves

I Medium may be:

Guided: wires/cables, e.g. twisted pair, coaxial cable,optical fiber

Unguided: wireless, e.g. air, water, vacuum

I Configuration may be:

Point-to-point: only 2 devices share mediumMultipoint: more than 2 devices share medium

I Direction of communications may be:

Simplex: one direction, e.g. televisionHalf duplex: either direction, but only one way at a

I Sine wave is the fundamental periodic signal

s(t) = A sin (2πft + φ)

I Communication signals are made up of sinusoid signals

Peak amplitude, A: maximum strength of signal overtime [volts]

Frequency, f : rate at which signal repeats [cyclesper second or Hertz]

Phase, φ: relative position signal hasadvanced (or shifted) to someorigin (usually 0) [radians]

I Other parameters:

Period, T : time for one repetition or cycle;T = 1/f

Wavelength, λ: distance occupied by one cycle;λ = c/f where c is speed of light(≈ 3x108m/s)

I Communication signals are composed of manycomponent sinusoid signals at different frequencies, e.g.

s(t) = (4/π) × [sin (200πt) + (1/3) sin (600πt)]

I Or, if f = 100Hz :

s(t) = (4/π) × [sin (2πft) + (1/3) sin (2π(3f )t)]

I When all frequency components of signal are integermultiple of one frequency, that one is calledfundamental frequency; the others are harmonicfrequencies

I Period of resulting signal is equal to period offundamental frequency component

I By adding together sine waves with differentamplitudes, frequencies and phases, any desiredcommunications signal can be constructed

I Spectrum of a signal is range of frequencies it contains

I Absolute bandwidth is width of spectrum

I If signal contains component with zero frequency, signalhas dc component

I Many signals have infinite absolute bandwidth, butmost of the signal energy is contained in narrow band offrequencies; called Effective Bandwidth or justBandwidth

I In practice, transmission system can only carry limitedband of frequencies

I Bandwidth limit of system determines data rate
