    Specialcablingisrequiredbythesystemmanufacturertoselectivelygroundthe

    CSELsignalononeoftheIDEcableconnectors.Forexample,whenoneofthedrives

    isconnectedtothegroundedCSELconductor,itconfiguresitselfasaMaster.When

    theseconddriveisconnectedtotheotherconnector,onwhichCSELisnot

    grounded,itbecomesslave.Thiseliminatestheneedforuniquejumpring

    configurationbetweentheMastersandslavedrives.

    CacheHighspeedRAMisusedasabufferbetweentheCPUandaharddrive.The

    cacheretainsrecentlyaccessedinformationtospeedupsubsequentaccesstothe

    samedata.Whendataisreadfromorwrittentodisk,acopyissavedinacache,

    alongwiththeassociateddiskaddress.Thecachemonitorstheaddressesof

    subsequentreadoperationstoseeiftherequireddataisalreadyinthecache.Ifitis,

    thedrivereturnsthedataimmediately.Ifitisnotinthecache,thanitisfetched

    fromthediskandsavedinthecache.
