Thank you for your interest in Emmaus Merseyside and in particular the post of Retail Manager.

Emmaus UK is a federal body supporting 24 Communities and 8 Groups in the UK. We are part of Emmaus International with over 300 Communities worldwide. Emmaus communities provide accommodation, training and work opportunities and personal support to enable homeless people to rebuild their lives and move on to live independently again.

Emmaus Merseyside is a charitable social enterprise which generates income to meet the deficit in providing the support for homeless people which is available in our accommodation close by at 1 School Lane, Seaforth, Bootle. Our Retail Superstore at 38 Sandy Road, Seaforth opened in June 2014. Trading at the 7,000 sq. ft. Superstore is now is covering its costs.

We are looking to recruit a Retail Manager for our Retail Superstore Manager to manage and further develop the trading potential of this facility. There is plenty of scope for someone with the right experience and enthusiasm to make the Sandy Road site into a “Destination” facility, attracting customers and visitors from a wide catchment area.

You may have managed a Charity Shop, run your own retail business or have good knowledge of the retail trade from some other position. You will also need to be able to work with a willing group of volunteers who will be involved in helping to run the Superstore, do the collections and deliveries and any other duties required.

Emmaus MerseysideHistory and background of the Organisation

Emmaus was founded in France in 1949 by Father Henri-Antoine Groues, better known as the Abbé Pierre, a Catholic priest and MP. Emmaus emerged in response to the poverty and poor conditions that existed in France in the aftermath of the 2nd World War. The principles upon which Emmaus is built originated from an encounter between Abbé Pierre and Georges – a homeless man who is now recognised as being Emmaus’ first ‘Companion’. The two friends set about building temporary homes for those in need, providing vital shelter and support for dozens of vulnerable people in the Paris area. Unable to financially support the 18 men who now formed part of Emmaus’ first Community – Abbé Pierre sought to identify a more sustainable method of supporting the group.

This involved the Companions finding and assembling items that people no longer wanted in order to sell them on. The profits realised from this venture supported the financial needs of the Companions – meaning they could proudly live independent of State support.

The self-sustaining principles of Emmaus continue to embody the movement to this day – with the ability to achieve financial independence being a pre-requisite of all emerging Emmaus Communities.

There are now more than 400 member Communities & Groups in the Emmaus movement, operating across 45 countries with 28 operational projects at various locations across the UK. Each Emmaus Group is an independent social enterprise, registered as a charity and company limited by guarantee, and affiliated to Emmaus UK.

Emmaus Merseyside and what does it do?

Emmaus Merseyside is run by a Board of Trustees drawn from a variety of backgrounds in local organisations, the church and public and private sectors. The Trust meets regularly each month and other Tasks Groups meet to consider the

detailed work necessary to ensure progress in a number of keys areas meets the timescale and other requirements involved.

The aims and objects of Emmaus Merseyside are to alleviate poverty and the hardship and distress which arise therefrom without distinction, by the provision of accommodation and assistance for homeless people in Merseyside together with education, training and work opportunities to enable those involved to move on to live independently. We are working to meet these aims through the provision of:

• An accommodation scheme and training facility• A social enterprise business

The people who are accommodated in an Emmaus scheme help to run the facility, they prepare and cook the food, clean the premises and run the furniture recycling and any other work related activities which may be set up. Our new residential accommodation in School Lane, Seaforth, Bootle provides 28 self-contained bedrooms –together with on- site accommodation for two staff. The scheme also includes catering kitchen facilities, communal dining area, lounge, IT training, keep fit and other training facilities. The building was opened in June 2016.

The Social Enterprise Activity: Purpose and Initial Scope

The Social Enterprise activities run by Emmaus Merseyside are key to our overall success. The income generated is required to fill the gap between the overall costs incurred and the housing benefit payments received. The Retail Superstore, together with any other trading activities, helps to generate the income required to make the whole organisation sustainable in the longer term. We have run the 7,000 sq.ft. Charity Superstore in Sandy Road, Seaforth since June 2014 and this is now creating a small surplus. We collect donations of quality unwanted furniture, white goods, clothes and bric a brac. These are checked over, cleaned, tested and repaired where necessary before being offered for sale. We also offer a delivery service to customers. We have begun an Upcycling project to provide greater variety of goods for sale to our customers and there is considerable scope for further development of this initiative. We also use E Bay Gumtree and other social media channels to market and sell our products.

The Charity Superstore facility is run with the help of Volunteers and Companions from the residential accommodation nearby. The Retail Manager will coordinate, train and work with the Volunteers and Companions in the running of the social enterprise.

Opportunities for Partnership working

We have worked with a significant number of local community and voluntary organisations throughout the period during which the residential accommodation and the retail superstore were being established. There is still plenty of opportunities to build on and extend these relationships since they provide valuable mutual support. We have established good working links with a variety of public, private and voluntary sector organisations in and around the area ( Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, Sefton MBC, Compass, YMCA, Local Solutions, Independence Initiative, Bosco Society, Liverpool One, the Beech Group, Tesco’s, Marks and Spencer, Speedy Hire, John Lewis Partnership etc). In addition we have raised significant funds from a variety of charitable sources including the

People’s Post Code Lottery, Hemby Trust, Henry Smith Charity Morgan Foundation and Anne Duchess of Westminster Charity along with others that wish to remain anonymous.

Furniture Recycling

The Charity Superstore takes in donated items of furniture for resale. Some repair and renovation work can be undertaken depending on the skills available etc. Other items could include books, clothing, toys and bric a brac. We have an agreement in place with Liverpool One to collect unwanted items left behind in shop units when retailers/restaurants vacate their premises. We also have arrangements in place with There is great ,potential to build on this kind of arrangement.

Key Activities and Tasks

We require an enthusiastic and experienced Retail Manager to develop the Charity Superstore to its full potential. This person will need to work cooperatively with other organisations in recruiting further volunteers as necessary and will organise and supervise the running of the Superstore, including the collection, pricing and delivery of goods.

The Manager will also need to ensure that information about the Superstore is communicated regularly and widely throughout the area using the many different networks (including press/media, social media, community and voluntary sector groups, private/retail business networks, Churches, Undertakers, Estate Agents, Social Housing organisations etc.) to ensure that the opportunity to donate unwanted items to Emmaus becomes very well known. A recognition of the contribution which social enterprises can make to the local economy and to social justice will also be required.

Ensuring there is timely and relevant information available to enable reporting on performance is an important part of this job to keep track of business trends and performance and enable Emmaus Merseyside to account for grant support. There is considerable scope to develop this Charity Superstore in response to local community needs and market opportunities.

The Manager of the Superstore can make an important contribution to the successful establishment and growth of social enterprise activities operated by Emmaus Merseyside.

Job Description

Location: Emmaus MerseysideAccountable to: Business Manager

Overall Purpose of the Job

To oversee the day to day running of the Emmaus Merseyside retail unit. You will support the Business Manager by working as requested with other staff, volunteers and companions to meet the target requirements for sales income whilst providing customers and supporters with a positive experience of Emmaus through excellent retail practices.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Retail Manager responsibilities:

Ensure the retail outlet responds effectively to customer needs and demands including maximising trading days / times

Make the arrangements necessary to enable the retail unit to meet income generation requirements, (e.g. materials, supplies, staffing, publicity, waste management and sales including deliveries/collections etc.)

Ensure that trading and other activities comply with the agreed Emmaus policies and practices, project /action and business plans. Manage risks, solve issues and problems proactively, and escalate issues to the Business Manager as appropriate

Keep accurate and up to date information of all aspects of trading activities as required for regular reporting to the Emmaus Merseyside Board and other relevant agencies

Retail Unit specific responsibilities Ensure that all merchandise is displayed attractively to agreed standards and in a

manner that is accessible to customers. Ensure an excellent standard of customer service.

Achieve the sales targets for the retail unit. Promote the sign up for Gift Aid, ensuring goods are correctly labelled in accordance with our gift aid policies and maximum donations are gift aided. Ensuring all proper administrative procedures are followed

Provide effective support and supervision of a team of Companions / volunteers and organise an appropriate rota to ensure that the shop is able to trade effectively Monday to Saturday and on Sundays as required

Ensure effective security measures throughout the Retail unit ( till operation, cash handling, security of stock and the premises)

Maintain a positive active relationship with other Re use shops Ensure collections and deliveries are arranged in an efficient and cost effective manner.

Receive stock and prepare for sale, including sorting, testing, repairing, hanging, steaming and pricing according to category.

Carry out monthly stock takes and produce monthly stock reports. Implement all promotional activity as advised, including Emmaus promotions, for

example solidarity events. Escalate to your line manager any issues and problems experienced, agree and

implement resolutions.

Policy Implementation Ensure that the Retail Business takes into account and benefits from advice available

across the Emmaus network in the UK and abroad, working with the UK Development Team and Trustees of Emmaus Merseyside.

Implement all policies and procedures needed to ensure Emmaus Merseyside fulfil all their various legal obligations working practices on site meet the relevant mandatory requirements (e.g. Health/Fire and Safety, trading standards etc.).

Recruitment and Management of Staff

Ensure the effective recruitment, training and support of volunteers in agreement the Business Manager, Community Manager and with Trustees where necessary

Supervise any staff and volunteers, agreeing and monitoring personal development and accreditation, reviewing performance, salaries and expenses under the direction of the Business Manager as appropriate

External Relations: Implement the marketing and publicity activities as agreed from time to time. Monitor

their effectiveness and feedback on effectiveness. Make use of social media and other relevant channels of communication and marketing ( E Bay, Gumtree etc.), working under the direction of the Business Manager with the Emmaus UK Communications Team, local individuals, groups and bodies as appropriate.

Financial Control

The Retail Manager will be held accountable for the income and expenditure of the unit. You will ensure the safe handling and transfer of cash. The Manager will be responsible for the verification, authorisation and monitoring of expenditure, within budget, and will Treasurer and Auditors

Emmaus Communities aim to be self -sustaining financially and the Retail Manager is expected to take effective measures towards this goal. Accounts of financial information must be clear, accurate and up to date, and the post holder should ensure that a “value for money” approach is adopted throughout the Retail unit activities.
