    Note:

    For

    existing

    installations

    upgrading

    have

    been

    introduced.

    The

    required

    migration

    associated

    across

    different

    logical

    subsystems

    (eliminates

    Existing

    functionality

    has

    been

    changed

    (’unmount’

    and

    extended

    with

    Introduction

    Data

    Protection

    for

    IBM

    ESS

    for

    mySAP.com

    Technology

    (hereafter

    DP

    for

    ESS)

    minimizes

    the

    impact

    on

    mySAP.com

    Oracle

    database

    servers

    while

    allowing

    automated

    database

    backups

    to

    the

    Tivoli

    Storage

    Manager

    Server.

    Integrated

    in

    the

    mySAP.com

    DBA

    tools2,

    DP

    for

    ESS

    off-loads

    the

    transfer

    of

    backup

    data

    from

    the

    database

    server.

    The

    Oracle

    database

    must

    reside

    on

    an

    ESS

    storage

    subsystem.

    DP

    for

    ESS

    V1R1

    provides

    options

    to

    implement

    high-efficiency

    backup

    and

    restore

    of

    business-critical

    databases,

    while

    virtually

    eliminating

    backup-related

    downtime

    or

    user

    disruption

    on

    the

    production

    host

    and

    significantly

    reducing

    database

    restore

    time.

    Understanding

    DP

    for

    ESS

    This

    section

    describes

    the

    operating

    environment

    and

    functions

    of

    DP

    for

    ESS.

    Operating

    Environment

    The

    operating

    environment

    consists

    of

    the

    Oracle

    DBMS

    executing

    on

    an

    AIX

    server

    to

    This

    AIX

    is

    the

    system.

    Another

    AIX

    server,

    the

    To

    to

    which,

    with

    its

    components

    (CORE,

    IDS,

    and

    will

    ensure

    that

    brbackup

    will

    also

    and

    control

    files

    of

    that

    will

    be

    accessed

    on

    the

    backup

    system

    via

    NFS.

    When

    performing

    the

    backup,

    brbackup

    will

    call

    DP

    for

    mySAP.com

    to

    perform

    the

    actual

    backup.

    brbackup

    normally

    runs

    as

    a

    batch

    job;

    however,

    as

    with

    other

    SAP

    DBA

    tools,

    it

    can

    also

    be

    called

    as

    a

    tool

    sapdba.

    be

    done

    interactively

    by

    running

    brrestore

    on

    the

    production

    system,

    which

    will

    call

    DP

    for

    mySAP.com

    (backint)

    to

    interface

    with

    DP

    for

    ESS,

    calling

    the

    ’flashback’

    function

    if

    requested.

    Role

    of

    splitint

    The

    ’split’

    function

    of

    splitint

    can

    be

    used

    by

    brbackup

    for

    FlashCopy

    operations;

    there

    are

    other

    functions

    (such

    as

    unmount,

    withdraw,

    password,

    and

    that

    calling

    splitint

    as

    a

    command

    not

    under

    control

    of

    brbackup.

    Optionally,

    after

    the

    call

    for

    the

    backup

    has

    completed,

    brbackup

    can

    call

    the

    resync

    of

    splitint

    to

    perform

    resynchronization.

    splitint

    is

    structured

    in

    3

    layers:

    CORE,

    LVM,

    and

    on

    the

    This

    the

    feature.

    This

    feature

    makes

    it

    possible

    to

    perform

    a

    background

    copy

    between

    the

    ESS

    source

    and

    target

    volumes

    without

    having

    to

    copy

    all

    the

    tracks

    in

    the

    process.

    This

    results

    in

    improved

    perfoce

    for

    the

    Oracle

    Servers

    that

    are

    configured

    to

    the

    ESS.

    Incremental

    FlashCopy

    applies

    only

    to

    the

    storage

    hardware

    level

    copy

    (the

    FlashCopy

    made

    between

    the

    ESS

    source

    and

    target

    volumes).

    It

    does

    not

    apply

    to

    the

    application

    level

    copy

    (the

    backup

    copy

    of

    the

    database

    to

    the

    Tivoli

    Storage

    Manager

    Server).

    An

    incremental

    FlashCopy

    (see

    ’RMAN

    interface’

    on

    page

    16)

    cannot

    be

    performed

    when

    the

    entire

    Oracle

    database

    is

    backed

    up

    to

    the

    Tivoli

    Storage

    Manager

    Server.

    An

    incremental

    FlashCopy

    backup

    is

    invoked

    with

    the

    value

    INCR

    for

    the

    FLASHCOPY_TYPE

    in

    the

    DP

    for
