The Data Management Plan
• National Science Foundation began requiring a Data Management Plan effective January 2011.
• Many agencies have since added Data Management Plan as required element of all proposals (NASA, DOE, ED, NIH)
• NSF will not evaluate any proposal missing a DMP• May be up to two pages long• PI may state that project will not generate data or samples• DMP is reviewed as part of intellectual merit or broader impacts of
application, or both• Costs to implement DMP may be included in proposal’s budget
Data Management Plan
• 1. Types of Data• 2. Standards Used for the Data• 3. Policies for Data Access and Sharing• 4. Policies and Provisions for re-use, re-distribution and production
of derivatives.• 5. Plans for Archiving
What is meant by “data management”?
Fundamental Practices• File Organization• Data Documentation• Reliable Backups
Data lifecycle• Digital Sustainability• Scholarly Communication• Data Publishing• Research Impact
Upfront Decisions for Researchers
• What is the expected lifespan of the data?• Besides the researcher(s) on the project, who else should be given
access to the data? • Does the dataset include any sensitive information?• Who owns or controls the research data? • Should any restrictions be placed on the dataset? • How are the data stored and preserved?
Upfront Decisions for Researchers
• How might the data be used, reused, and repurposed? • How is the data described and organized?• Who are the expected and potential audiences for the datasets?• What publications or discoveries have resulted from the datasets?• How should the data be made accessible?

Director, Office of Student Research
What is it?
An online resource that lets you:• Highlight your research expertise so that others can find you for
collaborations and/or funding opportunities.• Affiliate with a research institute/initiative
• Brain Health Research Institute• Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Research Institute• Environmental Science and Design Research Initiative• Global Understanding Research Initiative• Healthy Communities Research Initiative
• Post your open student research positions
Why is it important?
Facilitates:• KSU faculty to help identify collaborators for your research.• Students to identify faculty mentors and research assistantships.• Future students looking for faculty that are working in a specific area.• External faculty, corporations or sponsors looking for researchers.• Human subjects looking for research studies in which they can
participate.University Priorities:
• Students First• Global Competitiveness• Organizational Stewardship• Distinctive Kent State• Regional Impact
