Engagement
Family Engagement as Parent Involvement 2.0
Parent Involvement refers to parent participation in the systems and activities of Head Start in ways that support them as the primary educators, nurturers and advocates for individual children and for all children enrolled in the program. Parent Involvement refers to opportunities for parent participation in a variety of program activities that support child and adult development including policy and program decision making.
Family Engagement refers to ongoing, goal-directed relationships between staff and families that are mutual, culturally responsive, and that support what is best for children and families both individually and collectively. Staff and families share responsibility for the learning and development of children, the progress toward outcomes for children and families AND for parent involvement in the program. Parent Involvement is part of the larger construct of Family Engagement.

MVCDC Vision Statement
MVCDC achieves our mission by providing quality environments and experiences that support active learning, which empowers individuals to seize opportunities for improving their conditions in life.
We will promote life-long learning by serving as mentors and coaches for the children and parents we serve, as well as for each other.
We will provide leadership for quality programming in all areas and be advocates for children and their families.
We will be an employer of choice, employing qualified and diverse staff who demonstrate a strong commitment to professional development.
We will achieve financial flexibility by pursuing alternative sources of funding.
We will develop, in partnership with other community providers, creative initiatives to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities we serve.
MVCDC embraces the spirit of excellence in our work with children, families and the communities we serve.
MVCDC Values
MVCDC promotes learning for children, families, employees, partners, funders and the community through our commitment to:
QUALITY; setting and achieving high expectations and goals for service excellence,
HONESTY; openness and trust in all relationships and actions,
COMMUNICATION; effectively sharing information, skills and expertise,
TEAMWORK; achieving goals through cooperation,
CREATIVITY; the ability to generate new ideas and solutions,
RESPECT; treating individuals with dignity and acknowledging the contributions they make,
DIVERSITY; using an active participatory approach that embraces change, respects the variety of experiences, and values differences.
As a reform strategy, MVCDC believes that family
engagement is systemic, integrated and sustained.
Systemic family engagement is purposefully designed as a
core component of educational goals such as school
readiness, student achievement, and long term success.
Integrated family engagement is embedded into activities
and processes designed to meet these goals, including
training and professional development, teaching, learning,
community collaboration and the use of data for continuous
improvement and accountability. Sustainable family
engagement operates with adequate resources including
public-private partnerships, to ensure meaningful and
effective strategies that have the power to impact student
learning and achievement.
Family Engagement Definition
Family engagement at Miami Valley Child Development
Centers, Inc. is a shared responsibility of families,
schools and communities for student learning and
achievement; it is continuous from birth to young
adulthood; and it occurs across multiple settings where
children and families learn. A primary indicator for
successful family engagement is based on the
relationship or rapport that is built with the family.
