Students are advised to observe and record information on Plant Layout on below points-

    1. Area Analysis-a. Area statement for every activity, like floor area for manufacturing/production, stores, administration, services, electric sub-station, security, canteen etc.

    b. Area of every department and its percentage to the total building area.c. Percentage of area used in every department in different manners like working area, circulation area, store area, supervision area etc.

    d. Approximate building plan/plans drawn on grid paper.e. Area statement for 1000 (or such other scale of production) piece of production per day/shift.

    2. Study of important work stations-a. Activity study for every production activity like cutting, sewing, inspection, etc. Space andfacilities required (like- Light, steam, ventilation, temporary storage etc.) for every work station.

    b. Furniture requirement for work station- with size, quantum and locationc. Understanding of what distance such work station can be placed and what may happen whensuch distance is changed.

    3. Intensity/Concentration of services/infrastructural facilities-a. Number of electrical light points in every department and its LUX value at working height.b. Per squire meter concentration of light points and fan points in each department with heightfrom floor

    c. Number of steam points, exhaust, water points and sanitation points etc.

    4. Material Handling-a. Methods, equipments and patterns of material handling.b. Critical observation on frequency, direction, volume and distancec. Percentage of space occupied for material handlingd. Understanding possible overlap of Material Handling and Human Traffice. Relationship between In-out points and pattern of internal traffic.

    5. Safety Measures-a. Safety Devices, their nature, placement and maintenance and logic

    6. Health and Hygiene provision-a. Location and size (scale) of different supporting activities like- Lavoratories, Lunch rooms, showers, Locker rooms, changing rooms, water stands etc.

    b. Percentage of area distribution for such activitiesc. Judgment on adequacy of such facilities

    7. Building Study-a. Structural System-How the load of building components(mainly roof and floor) is carried toground

    b. Registering building materials, structural as well as finishing and door/windowsc. Building dimensions and its location on plot with adjoining conditions, its orientation withrespect to North.

    d. Service network in the building, mainly for electrification, water supply, steam supply, airconditioning and drainage

    e. Number of windows in each department and departmental percentage distribution of window.f. Ratio of window to the floor area.

    8. Observations on Strengths and weaknesses of the Layout-a. What you like about the plant and what didnt and why?b. Estimated Recurring cost and your suggestion/solutions to reduce itc. Given a chance what you will change in the existing set-up with proper justification.
