Our Goals

• Outline the scope and limitations of epidemiological data

• Review metrics that help us measure disease burden, disease severity,

and Virginia’s capacity to respond

• Highlight upcoming changes to VDH website

• Policy interpretations of this data: 2pm

Epidemiology vs. Daily Reporting

• Different goals

• Daily numbers vs. trends

• Delays due to disease timeline and human reporting

Important Definitions

• confirmed case: A person with a positive PCR test.

• positive test: A positive lab result per one person, per day. Note that the

number of positive tests on a given day will not directly equal the number of

confirmed cases. This is because a person who has already been confirmed may

receive a new positive test on a different day.

• epidemic curve: Description of the spread of the disease by onset of illness for

each person.

• Unique people tested: Total number of Virginians who have been tested

for COVID-19.

Data Limitations

• No one dataset can show us a completely accurate and

current picture of the disease and our ability to respond

• Instead, we rely on a variety of indicators that tell us how

the disease is spreading, how severe it is, and our capacity

to react accordingly
