DATA APPLIANCE FOR ARCGIS USE RESTRICTIONS

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS is a specialized Network Attached Storage device and should not

be administered as just another file server. Arxys manufactures the Data Appliance for ArcGIS for

the exclusive use with Esri ArcGIS for Server. The Data Appliance for ArcGIS is designed to be a

read-only device. Except for specific updates provided by Esri the Data Appliance for ArcGIS

should never be written to or used as an additional storage device. The Data Appliance for

ArcGIS ships with an embedded version of Microsoft® Windows Storage Server 2012 R2. This

license precludes the installation of additional software or adding additional roles to the appliance

to those that have been preloaded at the factory.

• The Data Appliance for ArcGIS can only be used to support ArcGIS for Server

(Standard or Advanced) 10.1-10.3 deployments at version 6.1 or newer.

• The Data Appliance for ArcGIS cannot be used in any other role other than that

of a NAS supporting an ArcGIS for Server environment

UNPACKAGING THE DATA APPLIANCE FOR ARCGIS

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS should be carefully removed from its shipping box. Inspect the

Data Appliance for ArcGIS and make sure that it was not damaged during shipping and transport.

The 1U Data Appliance for ArcGIS weighs 40lbs (with no hard drives loaded) it is still

recommended that two people handle the appliance. The 4U Data Appliance for ArcGIS weighs

Page 9: Data Appliance for ArcGIS User Guide for Windows Revision ...€¦ · • The Data Appliance for ArcGIS can only be used to support ArcGIS for Server (Standard or Advanced) 10.1-10.3

Page 9

approximately 80lbs (with no hard drives loaded). Two people will be required to safely remove

the appliance from the shipping box.

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS box includes removable front bezel for the server. Included in the

box are the adjustable sliding rails to mount your Data Appliance for ArcGIS server into a

standard computer equipment rack. The mounting kit is located within the smaller box that is

packed on top of the appliance.

RACKMOUNT CHASSIS INSTALLATION

You should install the largest and heaviest items on the bottom of your rackmount rack. Aside

from UPS systems the 4U Data Appliance for ArcGIS will be one of the heavier systems in your

cabinet.

• Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully extended to the floor with the

full weight of the rack resting on them.

• In single rack installation, stabilizers should be attached to the rack. In multiple rack

installations, the racks should be coupled together.

• Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component from the rack.

• You should extend only one component at a time - extending two or more simultaneously may

cause the rack to become unstable.

• Determine the placement of each component in the rack before you install the rails.

• Use a regulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect the server from power surges,

voltage spikes and to keep your system operating in case of a power failure.

• Allow any hot plug drives and power supply modules to cool before touching them.

• Always keep the rack's front door and all panels and components on the servers closed when

not servicing to maintain proper cooling.

• Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that the amount of airflow required for safe

operation is not compromised.

• Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the power supply circuitry

and the effect that any possible overloading of circuits might have on overcurrent protection and

power supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used

when addressing this concern.

DATA SET INSTALLATION (4U ONLY)

Data Appliance for ArcGIS in a 4U configuration is shipped without the data collection hard drives

installed in the system chassis to reduce the overall weight of the chassis during installation.

Before powering on the Data Appliance for ArcGIS, the data collection hard drives need to be

installed into the chassis.

Before proceeding, ensure that the data collection hard drives are labeled with the same serial

number listed on the Data Appliance for ArcGIS which is located on the front right corner of the

chassis. Each data collection hard drive is labeled according to the collection which it belongs to,

as well as the number of drives contained in each data collection. The data collections should be

installed in alphabetical succession (i.e., Collection A, Collection B, Collection C, etc.). The

installation process will vary according to which data collections were purchased. Each data

Page 17: Data Appliance for ArcGIS User Guide for Windows Revision ...€¦ · • The Data Appliance for ArcGIS can only be used to support ArcGIS for Server (Standard or Advanced) 10.1-10.3

Page 17

collection is composed of a varying number of hard drives. The hard drives for each collection

should then be installed sequentially (ex., Disk 1 of 2, Disk 2 of 2).

For example, Data Appliance for ArcGIS World Standard option is composed of data collections B,

C, and D. Collection B features 2 hard drives, C features 11 hard drives, and D features 8 hard

drives. Collection B is installed first into the Data Appliance for ArcGIS beginning with the bottom

left-most hard drive slot. Disk 1 of Collection B is inserted, while Disk 2 of Collection B is inserted

above Disk 1. Then Disk 1 of Collection C can be inserted directly above Disk 2 of Collection B

and so forth until all of Collection C is installed. Disk 1 of Collection D can then be inserted

directly above Disk 11 of Collection C and so forth until all of Collection D is installed.

Install all of the data collections purchased, making sure that all drives from the data collections

are installed in the Data Appliance for ArcGIS. If you find that a drive is missing, immediately

stop the installation procedure and contact Arxys technical support.

Figure 13

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS chassis features a label listing the arrangement of its hard disk

drive slots (Figure 13). This label ONLY provides a general pattern for the sequential installation

of the hard drives (beginning bottom to top, and then moving left to right) These labels can also

be used in the troubleshooting process to identify the location of a faulty drive.

Figure 14

1. Insert the hard drive and tray into the chassis. Make sure to press the drive carrier

handle closed until it clicks in place (Figure 14).

2. Repeat step one for all the drives shipped with Data Appliance for ArcGIS.

DATA APPLIANCE FOR ARCGIS MAINTENANCE

Although the Data Appliance for ArcGIS requires minimal maintenance, basic maintenance will

increase the lifespan of the hardware. Like the majority of equipment installed in a computer

hardware rack, the Data Appliance for ArcGIS uses a front intake and rear exhaust cooling

design. It is very important that the airflow of the cooling system is not blocked or hindered in

any way. The most common way that a server’s cooling system is blocked is by the accumulation

of dust in the front air intake passages of the server. At regular intervals the dust should be

wiped from the front bezel. Additionally, using compressed air to blow out the dust that has

settled on the drives bays will assist in keeping the Data Appliance for ArcGIS’s cooling system

running at its highest efficiency.

Please note that there are NO SERVICEABLE PARTS inside the Data Appliance for ArcGIS. All

hardware inside the Data Appliance for ArcGIS can only be serviced by Arxys trained technicians.

Any warranted system that experiences a hardware failure in the field that is not a hot-swappable

component such as a power supply module or hard drive will be replaced by Arxys as per the

warranty attached to the system.

Any attempt to access the Data Appliance for ArcGIS internal components will void the warranty

on the Data Appliance for ArcGIS.

DATA APPLIANCE FOR ARCGIS FIELD REPLACEABLE UNITS

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS was designed with attention to reliability and therefore utilizes

redundant components that can be replaced while the system is operating. These components

Page 33: Data Appliance for ArcGIS User Guide for Windows Revision ...€¦ · • The Data Appliance for ArcGIS can only be used to support ArcGIS for Server (Standard or Advanced) 10.1-10.3

Page 33

are referred to as Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) and are hot-swappable since they can be

removed and installed while the system is powered on.

The Data Appliance for ArcGIS utilizes two FRUs in both 1U and 4U configurations:

• Power Supply Modules

• Hard Drives

Both of these FRUs can be swapped in less than one minute by personnel that are familiar with

computer hardware. When replacing a failed FRU, make sure that a replacement FRU has been

received prior to removing the failed FRU. Removing a FRU for extended periods of time

compromises the airflow and cooling design of the Data Appliance for ArcGIS.

availability in case of a hard drives failure and support hot-plug capability. Replacement hard

drives with carriers will ship directly from Arxys. Do not remove any hard drives while the unit is

powered on without express instruction from a Arxys technical support engineer.

In the 1U Data Appliance for ArcGIS, the Universal Information LED will flash red slowly and an

audible alarm will sound until the failed unit has been replaced (Figure 44).

In the 4U Data Appliance for ArcGIS the Power Failure LED on the control panel will flash and an

audible alarm will sound until the failed unit has been replaced (Figure 45).

Replacement power supply modules will ship directly from Arxys. The power supply units have a

hot-swap capability, meaning you can replace the failed unit without powering down the system.

APPENDIX D

BASIC PROVISIONS OF ALL ARXYS WARRANTY PROGRAMS

1. A warranty is provided on a system-level basis. If Arxys-provided equipment or software is added to a system, the warranty

cost for these items will be charged on a pro-rated basis to run concurrent with the primary system warranty and will be at the same warranty level as the primary system.

2. If the Customer adds non-Arxys equipment or software to a system, the warranty for the system will end.

3. If warranty coverage is not maintained continuously for a system, the Customer may purchase at a time and material (T&M) rate a recertification of the system. Any repairs or costs associated with bringing the system back to Arxys specifications will also be charged on a T&M basis.

4. Customers who have not purchased a warranty plan or are not covered by the warranty may purchase services on a time and material basis, and the services will be provided by Arxys on an as-available basis.

5. Replacement parts used in providing warranty services may be new, reconditioned, or certified by Arxys; may be of various manufacturers; and will provide equal or better performance and/or capacity than the original item. Replacement parts are warranted for the remaining life of the purchased warranty and do not in any event extend the warranty life of the system or individual components.

6. Unless special warranty options have been purchased or arrangements have been made in advance, all parts removed from Customer's systems for replacement under warranty become the property of Arxys. Customer shall pay Arxys at the current retail price(s) for any service parts removed from the system and retained by the Customer or not returned to Arxys within 15 business days of receipt of replacement parts.

7. During initial system installation, the Customer will be entitled to a maximum of two hours of telephone support in configuring the system for use. After this initial allotment, additional phone support may be purchased at standard time and material rates.

8. Warranty support is supplied only for the operation of the Arxys-provided equipment and does not extend to any troubleshooting of, assistance with, or configuration of external systems and/or software connected to the Arxys systems. Red Hat and Esri software support and components shall be covered by the default warranty services provided to or purchased by the end users directly.

9. Prior to the expiration of the warranty term, the Customer may extend the term of the warranty or upgrade the service level of the warranty at the then current price. If the service level is upgraded, Arxys reserves the right to recertify the system and a fee may be charged. Any upgrade in warranty level will not apply to conditions existing with the system prior to the effective date of the upgrade in warranty and may incur time and material charges to bring the system into warrantable condition.

10. It is the Customer's responsibility to back up data on the Customer's system. While every attempt has been made to provide redundancy in the hardware, Arxys shall not be held responsible for loss of or damage to data or loss of use of any computer or network systems.
