The rapid growth of cities in the developingworld, coupled with increasing rural tourban migration, has led to a boom inmega-cities. In 1990, there were ten mega-cities with 10 million inhabitants or more.In 2014, there are 28 mega-cities, home toa total 453 million people.

Making cities safe and sustainable meansensuring access to safe and affordablehousing, and upgrading slum settlements. Italso involves investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improvingurban planning and management in a waythat is both participatory and inclusive.

"Sustainable cities and Communities" isone of 17 Global Goals that make up the2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An integrated approach is crucial forprogress across the multiple goals

Journey Of A Lifetime

Journey Of A LifetimeIn the month of December 2014, Parjanya Sarma went on an exchange program to Porto Alegre, Brazil as amarketing intern. Here are excerpts from an interview in which he shares his experience.

1) What was your first impression of Brazil before you visited the country and how did it changeonce you went there? Before I visited the country, it was almost impossible for me. I literally couldn’t believe that I got matchedand I was going there. Just before I went there, a lot of people scared me about a lot of things. They saidthat there is going to be a lot of drugs and violence. All I knew was that I was going to Brazil and thatBrazil was about beaches and football. I was scared about what was going to happen to me once I go there. After staying there for some days all my fears were put to rest and all the stereotypes I had about thecountry changed.

2) Describe one moment in the trip that you are going to remember forever.During Christmas my host took me to his parents’ place and I stayed there for 5 days. It was a tiny villagecalled Pato Branco. On the last day I was going to this place called Foz do Iguaçu in the border ofParaguay. I am a vegetarian and Luiz’ mom did not know how to cook vegetarian food so she packedtomato and cheese sandwiches and apples for me because that was the only vegetarian food that shecould offer me. Luiz’ parents was warning me not to accept unattended bags, not to talk to strangers andso on. They don’t speak English so everything was translated to me through Luiz. Midway into translatingwhat they was saying, he stopped and asked his dad why he was telling all this when I was already soscared of Brazil. there was an argument happening His dad looked worried and his mom was sniffling andI could not understand so I asked Luiz. He told me that they're saying it's the first time his parents hadadopted an Indian as their son and they’re just having parent’s conern. That moment was very emotional.Sharing such a bond with someone halfway across the globe, who doesn’t even speak your language, justafter living with them for five days. The possibility of it is something that I would never forget. Ever.

3) Let us talk about your project. How was your experience as a marketing intern?I was working for an NGO called Instituto Providencia. It worked with children from homes with unstableenvironments. The NGO was not well established. It did not have basic things like a proper website or afacebook page. We were a group of four. One member among us knew a little bit of Portuguese and shewas the link between the NGO and the team. Another member who knew English acted as the link betweenthe team and me. I translated their website into English and made a proper Facebook page for them. Wealso partnered with the Kindergartens nearby so that they would also know what the NGO is about. Sobasically my work was about establishing the NGO in that neighbourhood.

4) How did being an exchange participant change you and your outlook towards life?I believe my greatest strength is my communication skills and the command I have over English. But whenyou are in a place where your strength means for nothing, how do you cope up? In a place where you haveno family, no friends, when you are literally halfway across the globe, you learn a lot. Even going back homewas a 4 day task. I was not staying in a major city and Bangalore was a 17 hour flight away. It was a leap offaith for me. It felt like I was jumping off a precipice hoping that there is a safety net to catch me.

5) Why do you think students should participate in an exchange program?I think we, the students of bangalore live in a well. i Believe our lives revolve around tiny rat raceslike attendance percentages, our internal marks, our movie plans and so on and we think that is the worldthat there is. There is a need to realise that the world is so much bigger than that. Going on an exchange islike getting out of that well and standing in front of an ocean. In Brazil going to a nearby shop to buy asnack was a half an hour task for me. Wherever I went, I attracted attention due to my broken Portuguese. It was the most uncomfortable situation to live in, where none of your strengths help you. When you areput in such a situation, you realize that all the things back home that you thought were a big deal areactually quite nothing. If you can live in a country for six weeks when you don’t even speak the language, you can definitely figure out a way around something as your attendance percentage.

6) What advice do you want to give to those students who want to go for an exchange program?Keep an open mind. When I went to Brazil, for the first 4 weeks, my house, my room and my bed was mycomfort zone and I did not get out of that. That was probably my only regret about my exchange. I din'tgo out much. It was only in the last 2 weeks that i really went around the place. I wish I had not taken solong to get out of my comfort zone. Going on an exchange, you will see things, you will do things that youhave never thought of doing in your life. You will meet really interesting people. Just be openand go explore.

7) One word that sums up your experience in Brazil. It was intense, challenging and something that I probably will never get to experience again. It just cannotbe summed up in one word.
