THEY LOVED IT SO MUCH THEY STAYED.

Neil and Sue Dibbs and their two young daughters – arrived in Darwin just on 38 years ago for a two-year work posting. And they’re all still here! They fell in love with the small city, its tropical ambience, its easy accessibility, and most importantly, its friendly people.

Darwin High School is celebrating the achievements of its Year 12 Class of 2015. Ninety-eight per cent of students completed their NTCET and nine students achieved in the Territory’s Top 20, including the top NT student Lauren Northcote and the top NT Indigenous student Lauren Seden.

Darwin High’s Principal, Trevor Read says high expectations are the key to the school’s success. ‘We do more than just support students to complete. We create an environment that motivates and challenges them to achieve to their full potential’.

Lauren Northcote agrees, ‘The expectations of teachers that all students can succeed and the support available

was what I really treasured.’ Lauren achieved an ATAR of 99.90 and was successful in gaining a prestigious full scholarship to study a double degree in Law/Commerce at Bond University.

In 2015, Darwin High became an independent public school, ‘Being more autonomous means our school community has a greater say and we can be more innovative in our programs and curriculum offerings to meet the needs of all students,’ says Trevor.

David Cannon, Principal said: “The results were outstanding on a number of fronts. Nearly 11% of students completing Year 12 were in the Top 20 NTCET score range. Eleven students achieved A+ and Merit Awards. Fifteen students achieved A+, thirty three students achieved A grades (39% of these students being in Year 11), and sixty students achieved A- grades (27% of these being in Year 11). The Essington students total average score on NTCET was 250, where NTCET students usually only have the mandatory 200 points”.This year seven Essington students received a $1000 Essington NTCET Excellence Award for achieving a score in the range of the Top 20 NTCET students. These students were Roman Delo, Molly Barron, Jemma Britton, Niamh Marah, Ruby Perryman, Rachel Carroll and Thomas Huntingford.The School’s highest scoring student was Roman Delo who began his educational journey aged three years of age in The Essington School Darwin Preschool. Roman has particularly enjoyed his last three years at The Essington International Senior College on the campus of Charles Darwin University and its ‘tight-knit community’. “While I’m sad about leaving the community of the Senior College, I truly believe I have made lifelong friends in my time at Essington and look forward to continuing these contacts”, Roman said.While the Performing Arts have become a passion for Roman, his experiences at the school have been many and varied. A stand-out memory for Roman in his time at school was the School’s unique learn to fly program when he found himself flying a powered glider and performing various manoeuvres

in it. He also completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award this year, and was awarded the Year 12 Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award. “The Senior College has been great. I felt really supported there and the support of the teachers made it easy to excel”, said Roman.Niamh Marah, a student at The Essington School Darwin since Year 7 and one of the College’s School Captains, scored 98.75 putting her in the range of Top 20 NTCET scores. Niamh recounted some of the many varied experiences she had whilst a student at the school – Global Issues Youth Conference in Beijing, Dance Extension Program at the National University of Singapore, several Ski Camps to Falls Creek and Mt. Hotham, the Learn to Ski Camp and achieving her Gold Award in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Recently she was awarded the NT Youth Business Award for Secondary Students, and received the Caltex All Rounder Award. “For me the support of the teachers, my friends and the Senior College community has been so important in my NTCET years, particularly this year”, said Niamh.

Always look to progress,” she says.Purchasing their first Oyster Bar in Holdfast Shores, South Australia from her father-in-law in 2010, Kirsty and her husband Jarrad quickly expanded their empire to encompass Oyster Bar Mandurah in Western Australia and, more recently, Oyster Bar Darwin.Selling South Australian Oysters – predominantly Coffin Bay – and promoting the idea of share food, all Oyster Bar venues around the country are situated in waterside locations where customers can relax and enjoy local wine and craft beer while partaking in the views.It was while studying a Bachelor of Arts and Education that Kirsty was first introduced to the concept of the Oyster Bar, when Jarrad began working alongside his father at their Holdfast Shores location. “My husband called on one of their first weekends and wanted me to come in and help because it was so busy. I was petrified. I’d never poured a beer in my life,” recalls Kirsty.It didn’t take long however for Kirsty to find her niche, and discover her love of working with people and enhancing the customer experience.“I’m passionate about making people happy. It sounds cliché, but you can get so much satisfaction in your own life and

be such a better person if you can make others happy,” says Kirsty.Describing herself as driven, generous and applied, Kirsty says her sense of humour and ability to laugh through tough times is her best quality.Inspired by her hard working family, Kirsty believes the key in motivating people around you is understanding that everybody learns things differently, and highlighting and building upon their individual strengths will encourage staff to provide customers with the level of service that you yourself would provide.“Be realistic, and never force someone to do something that is not right for them. You can teach them the skill and the knowledge, but they must have the desire,” says Kirsty.“You have to love what you do and that will motivate you personally. If you are not motivated and excited by what you are doing you will be limited to the level of success you will strive to achieve,” she adds.

Fast forward to 2008, and Annette was awarded the Telstra Business Woman of the Year, the Entrepreneur of the Year and the Educator of the Year awards for her firm Biznorth, a business consultancy firm specializing in organizational development, human resources, education and training.“Successful women are women who don’t give up. They are women who overcome difficult hurdles,” says Annette.Annette suggests that overcoming challenges, particularly financial ones, are much like surfing. “There are times where you ride the wave high, and I’ve certainly had that, and then there are times when something unexpected will cause a ripple in the water somewhere,” she explains.With fire in her belly and a passion for helping people achieve, Annette sees herself as a change “angel”, championing for people to focus their energy into solutions and thinking outside the square.“Creating amazing change is what drives me, and my business has always been a source of change,” says Annette.

This year the Northern Territory branch of the

Leukaemia Foundation is hoping to raise $320,000

throughout the campaign.

“More than 150,000 people are expected to take

part in World’s Greatest Shave from March 10-13

and they’ll do so at home, work, school and our

public events,” said Kon Vatskalis, Leukaemia

Foundation Regional Manager, NT.

“The money your sponsors give will go towards

research which is needed to find better treatments

and cures for Leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma

and relation blood disorders,” Mr Vatskalis said.

For Territorians the support is wide-reaching,

and can include free accommodation, transport,

counselling and financial support while in other

capital cities undergoing vital blood cancer

treatment.

From small beginnings in 1998, World’s Greatest

Shave is now the Leukaemia Foundation’s most

important fundraiser, providing a fun way to lessen

the impact of blood cancer in our community.

In the Northern Territory this will include a major

event at TIO Stadium, a public group shave at

Casuarina Shopping Centre and a number of

community shave events.

Last year Alice Springs group Team William raised

an astonishing $36,569.15 through a number

of unique events. It’s just one example of the

generosity and hard work behind the campaign

in the NT.

Whether motivated by a personal connection

or the desire to help others, people who shave

also help to normalise baldness, one of the most

distressing side-effects of cancer treatment.

“Ultimately, it’s just hair. What better way to show

your Aussie spirit of mateship then by deciding

to lose or change your hair for a little while, to

help others get through the toughest of times,” Mr

Vatskalis said.

When it came time to reenter civilian life, Suzi found that her training in electronic warfare had no equivalent outside the military, and she would need to draw on her skills to retrain.“I had to reinvent myself. I’ve had to do that on multiple occasions throughout my life as times change and you seek other career opportunities,” she says.An advocate for applying to a company that you want to work for rather than applying for a job, Suzi wrote a letter to National Australia Bank (NAB) asking them to employ her.Starting her banking career as a teller, Suzi was recognized as a rising star, and owes her success in part to the mentoring she received at the NAB.“Sometimes you need a sponsor or an advocate to help you, especially in a place that is so far away from the eastern

seaboard. To have that person who continues to look at you as the future in their organization is very helpful. You achieve that by having mentors, and by being open to having discussions with them around anything, as well as being able to learn from them,” she says.Now Westpac State General Manager for Commercial Banking for South Australia and Northern Territory, Suzi also runs Westpac’s National Indigenous Business portfolio. Because I certainly did. And now the time comes to once again, set goals, affirmations and the dreaded “resolutions”. But here’s the thing: at the end of every year, I look back on the 365 days that were and I feel…unfulfilled. Sort of unsatisfied with what I have done and achieved. Crazy I know. Some would call me ungrateful; from the outside looking in, my life is practically a fairytale. It’s not that I’m unhappy, but that I, like many others, suffer from Gen Y syndrome. The main symptom being wildly high ambition and elevated expectations of oneself. In short, I think that by 31 I should have made my first million, had my 2.5 perfect children, bought my first house, traveled the world, been on a magazine cover, written 6 books and have been crowned Miss Australia all while discovering a cure for back-acne and keeping an immaculate house in 6 inch heels. Writing it all down like that makes it seem delusional. But this is the kind of dialogue that goes on in the head of us overachieving Gen Y’s. Something goes right for us, and

instead of focusing on how great it is, we say “yeah but…where are the green glittery sprinkles on top?” As much as I am all for pushing ourselves forward to bigger and better and great things, this glass half empty thinking is ruining our lives. So in 2016, my challenge for you is to take the time to appreciate and celebrate your little wins, before you charge ahead for the next thing. For me, this thing is my “good things” jar. Mr CH and I have a beautiful big glass vase that we fill with “good things”. Every time something great happens in our lives (like getting shoes you’ve wanted for ages on sale) we write down the date and what that good thing was, and pop it in the jar. That way, when we are feeling all “I’m-no-good-at-this-adult-thing”, we can open a good thing from the jar and feel better. On New Years Eve, we sit down and open all the good things from the past year to help us reflect, be grateful and actually pat ourselves on the back a little.

Never afraid to “have a go”, Sandra counts a nurse, a police officer, and a casino croupier on cruise ships and in many land based casinos among her repertoire of careers to date.“I think if something is not working in your life, you need to have the self belief to go on and change it and do other things,” she says.“I’ve had some great career highlights, but if it stops serving a purpose, I’m not scared to look outside the box and find something else to do,” she adds.According to Sandra, successful women possess a self-belief and drive to achieve, as well as that a love of what they do.Now the owner of Hair Free Darwin, a

1. Try to make every single decision before any work actually starts on your home. Have a detailed schedule of works and lists of all of the finishes and fittings that will be needed in you project so as your builders asks you to clarify these items you have them all right at hand. 2. “Don’t put lipstick on a pig.’ Making superficial or cosmetic changes is a futile attempt to disguise a home that should really be knocked down. It sounds harsh but there are some homes that you just cannot save so you need to be realistic about how much time and money you invest in a home that won’t increase in value. If unsure get professional advice and listen to the experts who come to assess your job. 3. If at all possible move out of the house while renovating. It will save your builders and tradesmen time not having to accommodate you getting in the way and will save you the stress of being on site noticing all the little things that you really don’t need to worry about. Don’t be a distraction on site, it isn’t good for anyone. For small renovations you may get away with remaining in the home still but for any major works move out for a short period of time and I

guarantee the process will be much smoother. 4. Don't start work without a well thought out design in place first and have a detailed floor plan. A lot of elements need to interact in your space so put them all together on paper and you will discover problems before they are built. Some projects will require an architect, others an interior designer, or if you do your research and hire a talented builder they may be able to help you come up with a good plan just don’t try to do it all on your own unless you have LOTS of previous experience, it very rarely works out for first time renovators.5. Never ignore what the house itself wants. Regardless of the style of your home it will lend itself to certain elements and there will be others that just wont work. Take into consideration the surroundings as well as the existing elements already within your home and then start making plans for what you want to add to it or change. There are no definite rules of what will or wont work in a space but if get to know your house, live in it first and do your research you will always end up with a better outcome. If you want a functional and beautiful space, hire a designer.

The pads are able to float because they are full of lightweight packing tissue and this gives them buoyancy. The surface is waxy and water-repellent and this is where the air-breathing pores are kept. The stems underneath act like ventilation shafts and they will take the oxygen to all parts of the plant beneath the water. Waterlilies add grace to any pond and many varieties are available to suit our climate or size of pond, with some even small enough to grow in a bowl on a patio. The tropical varieties have the most beautiful blooms and are delicately fragranced. Some of the most luscious plants that you can grow in water include the Elephant’s Ears or Cunjevoi Alocasio macrorrhiza. It is an Australian plant that thrives in tropical conditions and only needs to grow in moist soil. If you already have a naturally moist spot in the garden, this plant could be considered to help save water. Taro Colocasia esculenta loves wet feet and they can be grown with trickle irrigation. There are some very attractive varieties, and some that can be grown as a crop at home, but they need very wet soil and must be grown in tropical conditions. Taro is very easy to propagate. Simply divide the plant; remove the leaves so that the plant doesn’t dehydrate. Being adapted to water, it is the water pressure that keeps the leaves erect and sometimes the excess water can be seen as beads on the leaves. Just plant the divisions back into the pot. Don’t waste the leaves as they can be used as a vegetable like spinach.Papyrus plants are ancient Egyptian sources of paper, and add an incredibly unique tropical look to the pond. Like other Tropical Bog Plants, Papyrus will vary in size depending upon variety; however they all have long green stalks with green foliage plooms on the tops. This is the giant papyrus plant..Dwarf papyrus is derived from the giant papyrus. As its name indicates, it's a smaller version, but its stems are still strong. These plants can be invasive, keep control of them in your pond by keeping them in pots and cleaning them up every few months.The genus Cyperus comprises a group of handsome, water-loving sedges, many of which are wonderful additions to aquatic garden features. The dwarf papyrus produces green, mop like heads on sturdy stalks that reach 1-2 feet above the water. Aquatic plants are adapted to using very few nutrients, so when you are growing them don’t use an ordinary potting mix and don’t use garden soil as they have far too many nutrients in them. Unused nutrients will only grow slime that makes life very difficult for fish. So when you do grow them get a specially formulated potting mix just for aquatic plants.Water gardening is increasingly popular, and the range of plants that you can grow in water and moist soils has increased dramatically in recent years. In choosing plants be aware of their individual needs. There are three basic water zones when considering plant selection: bog or marginal water's edge - plants grown in these areas do not like drying out; shallow water; deep water. This knowledge will help you to grow them well and maybe even save some time and water. Short of space in your backyard? Easy, create your very own unique water garden in a pot...
