We are going to one of the more remote and highest areas in the Darwin Range, to explore, climb and walk on millennia glaciers.

We plane to pass 10 days in land, with an open plan.

Our idea include multiple possibilities, from explore and climb some easymounts, to climb some big one, like Mount Shipton, the highest peak of Darwin Range.

Depending of the weather, mountain conditions and the group interest, wewill climb and walk in this remote area.

Weather & Climate

This region has an oceanic climate with short, cool summers and long, wet, moderately mild winters: the precipitation averages 3,000 mm (118 in) a year in the far west, but precipitation decreases rapidly to the eastern side. Temperatures are steady throughout the year: in Ushuaia they hardly surpass 9 °C (48 °F) in summers and average 0 °C (32 °F) in winters. Snowfall can occur in summer. The cold and wet summers help preserve the ancient glaciers. The southernmost islands possess a sub antarctic climate typical of tundra that makes the growth of trees impossible. Some areas in the interior have a polar climate. Regions in the world with similar climates to southern Tierra del Fuego are: Aleutian islands, Iceland, Alaska Peninsula, Faroe Islands, Macquarie Island and Heard and McDonald Islands.

Mountains

The Cordillera Darwin is an extensive mountain range mantled by an ice field. It is located in the southwestern portion of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, entirely within the Chilean territory. It is part of the longest Andes range and includes the highest mountains in Tierra del Fuego, with elevations reaching over 2,000 m (6,600 ft); The ice field of the Cordillera Darwin covers an area greater than 2,300 square kilometres(890 sq mi). The Darwin Range extends in a west-east direction from the Mount Sarmiento to Yendegaia Valley. It is bounded by the Almirantazgo Fjord on the north and the Beagle Channel on the south. The range is named after Charles Darwin and is the most important feature of Alberto de AgostiniNational Park, which includes a number of well known glaciers including the MarinelliGlacier, which is now under prolonged retreat as of 2008.
