As part of a busy week of free concerts forLBUSD students, Long Beach Symphony willcelebrate things that fly with a fun-filledmusical event for families.

On Saturday, February 2 at 2 p.m., theSymphony will present “Up! Up! And Away!,”a family concert that explores things that fly –from bumblebees to birds, kites to magiccarpets, dragons to aliens, and superheroes tostarships!

The concert will be preceded by a MusicalPlayground: 2 hours of entertaining activitiesthat are free and open to the public beginningat 12 noon on the plaza of the Terrace Theaterat the Long Beach Performing Arts Center(300 E. Ocean Blvd.). The entire communityis invited to enjoy an instrument petting zoo,parachute play, face painting, arts and crafts,story time, corn hole, ping pong, and otherforms of interactive musical activitiesabsolutely free of charge. Best of all, children17 years old and under will receive freeadmission to the concert thanks in part to agrant from the Earl B. and Loraine H. MillerFoundation that has partnered with the LongBeach Symphony to make these concertsaccessible to all children throughout theregion.

Maestro Eckart Preu will lead theorchestra in performances of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee,Saint-Saëns’ The Swan from Carnival of theAnimals, as well as familiar tunes from themovies E.T., Harry Potter, Star Trek, and more.Audiences enjoy an afternoon of interactivemusical activities, sing-alongs, conducting,dancing, and more!

To facilitate attendance from Long Beach’s9th district, Long Beach Transit will providefree “Symphony Express” roundtrip bustransportation from the Michelle ObamaLibrary at 5870 Atlantic Avenue to the Long

Beach Performing Arts Center. TheSymphony will also partner with Arts CouncilLong Beach, Long Beach Unified SchoolDistrict, Long Beach Ballet, Long BeachYouth Chorus and other arts organizations, tocreate a festival-like atmosphere.

“Our first Family Concert in April 2018 washugely successful, filling almost all 3,000seats in the Terrace Theater,” enthusedSymphony President Kelly Lucera. “It waswonderful to see families from all over LongBeach experiencing the magic of aprofessional symphony orchestra. We can’twait to do it again on February 2nd.”

The Family Concert Series and MusicalPlayground are made possible by grants anddonations from the Earl B. and Lorraine H.Miller Foundation.

Participation in the Musical Playground isfree for people of all ages, and the FamilyConcert is free to children 17 years old andunder (must be accompanied by an adult).Adult concert tickets are $20 and can bepurchased in advance online, through theSymphony box office or at the door. Though the Family Concert series is arecent undertaking, the Long BeachSymphony’s Toyota Youth Concerts havebeen an integral part of the Long BeachUnified School District’s music educationprograms for more than 35 years! This year,on January 31 and February 1, 12,000 4th and5th-grade students of the Long Beach UnifiedSchool District and select Wilmington schoolswill be bused to the Long Beach PerformingArts Center Terrace Theater for the opportunityto experience the orchestra playing live in theconcert hall.

The Super Bowl isfast approaching, andmore than three-quarters of Americanadults plan to watchthe big game. Whilecold brewskies andfootball are a classiccombo, moreAmericans will beopting for soft drinksthan beer this year.

That’s according to a survey bySwagbucks, a rewards- and loyalty-programcompany operated by Prodege, LLC, thatexamined Americans’ plans for the SuperBowl this year. The national survey of 1,000U.S. adults was conducted online by Prodegein January 2019.

When it comes to what they’ll be drinking,many Super Bowl fans will be opting for sixpacks — of soft drinks. Almost a third (32percent) of football fans will opt for soda thisyear; 29 percent will be drinking beer.

The survey also revealed that, when itcomes to favored teams, Americans arealmost twice as likely to root for Jared Goffand the Los Angeles Rams (50 percent)than Tom Brady and the New EnglandPatriots (27 percent).

Meanwhile, the majority of Super Bowlfans are also foregoing parties. Only 9percent plan to host, and only 21 percent plan

to attend a party. Therest (65 percent) planto stay home towatch the game bythemselves or withfamily.

For those planningto attend a SuperBowl party, most willspend their timewatching the game

(45 percent), followed by:Socializing — 25 percent•

Eating snacks and/or drinking — 15•percentTuning in for the commercials — 10 percent•

Watching the halftime show — 6 percent•

What’s the big attraction? More than half(57 percent) of American men say theirfavorite part is the game action, while 41percent of American women most enjoy thecommercials.

“The Super Bowl is an exciting event anda time when people come together to watchthe culmination of a season’s worth of hardwork,” said Chuck Davis, CEO and chairmanof Prodege, LLC. “Swagbucks is excited tohelp Americans save money on their favoriteteam’s gear, party supplies and whatever elsewill contribute to the best possible SuperBowl viewing experience.”

Run Seal Beach is one of the largest grantgiving organizations in our region. Funds goto a variety of non-profits, particularly in thesports and recreation sector. The entire LosAlamitos Unified School District (LAUSD) isthe major beneficiary with over 48% of thetotal funds raised over the last fifteen years.Other major recipients include the City ofSeal Beach recreation department, police,lifeguards and other Seal Beach and LosAlamitos based non-profits.In general, grantrecepients range in awards from $500 to justover $7,500. Uses are usually for direct

equipment costs or improvements toprograms for the recipeints. For manygroups, like the Los Alamitos booster clubs,the Run provides vital funding to supportmany of their direct costs.

The local run relies heavily onsponsorships to defray expenses and enableit to give back to the community. Since2003, Run Seal Beach has given back morethan $1,680,000 to benefit the greater SealBeach area including Rossmoor and LosAlamitos - a feat they could not accomplishwithout the support of their sponsors andpartner, the City of Seal Beach.

The run takes a year of planning from theall-volunteer board of directors, anoperational race day team and more than500 volunteers on race day. Greg Phillips,race director said, “Our mission is to Promotehealth and fitness in a family friendly event,while supporting non-profit groups providingrecreation, fitness and leisure in our localcommunity.”

The Kid’s 1K Fun Run T-Shirt DesignContest has begun. The 2019 theme is“Party on the Pier.” The deadline for entriesis on February 28th, so if you are currently astudent or home schooled in the LosAlamitos Unified School district and are underthe age of 10, you are eligible to win!
