Peter’s Creek Reserve Grows Thanks to the generosity of Peter and Nancy Spindler, DNRT has expanded its “Peter’s Creek Reserve” from 20 to 29 acres and will soon be able to offer public access from Gaffney Road to this lovely property. LocatedattheconfluenceofSlocum’sRiverandPeter’sCreek,thePeter’sCreekReservewasfirstcreatedin2009when DNRT, with the help of the Buzzards Bay Coalition and a federal grant, purchased (in a bargain sale) from the Spindlers 18 acres of salt marsh and 2 acres on two small upland islands. The larger of the two islands had a 900-foot-long trail down the middle of it, but was only accessible to the public by boat. In 2012, the Spindlers approached DNRT about donating another 9 acres of marsh as well as a trail easement that would provide pedestrian access from Gaffney Road across land owned by the Spindlers to the Peter’s Creek Reserve. DNRT would also hold a conservation restriction on a 2-acre Open Space lot next to Gaffney Road. For the 9-acre donation, the Spindlers successfully applied to the Commonwealth’s “Conservation Land Tax Credit” (CLTC) program which provides a tax credit of 50% of the appraised donation value (up to a maximum of $50,000) for permanent protection of important natural resources that are in the public’s interest. Because the CLTC program requires a conservation restriction on the land, DNRT asked the Buzzards Bay Coalition to hold such a restriction on the Peter’s Creek Reserve. Once DNRT has completed its proposed trail, one will be able to walk from Gaffney Road to the Peter’s Creek Reserve and enjoy wonderful views of Slocum’s River, Peter’s Creek,andthesurroundingsaltmarsh.TheReservehasapproximately3,800feetofwaterfrontandhasbeenidentifiedas “Critical Natural Landscape” and “Priority Habitat for State-Protected Rare Species” by the Commonwealth’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. The Reserve also contains three habitats (salt marsh, small islands and riparianforest)identifiedbytheDivisionofFishandGame’sStateWildlifeActionPlanasbeinginthe“greatestneedofconservation.” Stay tuned for an announcement of the trail opening!

The Closing of the 2012 River ProjectDNRT and The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR), hosted a special Closing Celebration for “The River Project: Sculpture at Slocum’s River Reserve” on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The celebration featured a guided walk with the artists, musical entertainment by the Spindle RockRiverRats, storytellerTobyDills, speakers, musicandabonfire.
“The River Project: Sculpture at Slocum’s River Reserve” was a collaborationbetweenUMassDartmouth,DNRT,TTORandtheGustin
Gallery, and was supported in part by a grant from the Dartmouth Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. This was our second collaboration together and this year’s sculptures were created by six talented artists: Mimi Frank, Elizabeth Dooher, RonRudnicki,LasseAntonsen,Danielle Krcmar, and Steve Whittlesey.
Weareextremelygratifiedwiththe success of the project which increased public exposure to and support for the protected lands around us and it encouraged the powerful dialogue between art and nature for all who visited.

Lately, we have focused our efforts on the mowing and pruning maintenance that is necessary to keep our reserve trails from becoming swallowed up by the thick summer vegetation. However, at the same time we are still dealing with remnants of the heavy autumn and winter storm season, and discover new issues on a near weekly basis. Many of you who walk our trails regularly have kept us abreast of new issues as soon as they develop, particularly where trees have fallen across trails.Wegreatlyappreciatethisinformationasitsavesustimeandallows us to focus our efforts in the most critical areas. DNRT is lucky to have had such a good friend to help us get our start.
