As it is being developed, the story and characters of Finding You, will be
produced into a puzzle-based role playing game that I plan to publish upon
completion. My goals for this game, it’s story, and it’s characters, is to make the
audience really think about what it means to find themselves.
The character designs and concepts start out as pencil sketches on a piece of
paper or in my sketchbook. They are then redrawn using an Apple iMac - 21.5”,
Wacom Cintique 13HD Tablet, and Adobe Photoshop CS6 and CC.
Finding you is a short story of two teen girls, Maya and Zoey, who come across
an alien life form. The alien has come to Earth in order to find its friend who fell
down to Earth a thousand years prior. Upon the alien’s request, Maya and Zoey
go on an adventure to help find the alien’s friend.

6Initial Sketches
MayaConservative Guardian
A bit of a passive-aggressive personality,
Maya acts as sort of a guardian for the
people she cares about. Maya is easily
aggravated by misjudgment, yet is too
timid to act against it. Hating herself
for her timid personality, Maya seeks to
preserve other people’s positive aspects
for support.

Character Turnaround

Initially, Maya’s concept was
very generic. I wasn’t sure what
sort of character I wanted to
create since my story concept
had yet to be really developed.
Working from the initial sketches,
I ended up with a cold looking
personality with an average and
tomboyish looking design. This
immediately sparked inspiration
for my next character and how
the story would be developed.

ZoeyCurious Adventurer
A very passionate and curious teenage
girl, Zoey loves to learn and explore.
She has an open mindset and is very
carefree around other people. Despite
her very energetic and outgoing
personality, Zoey’s self-perception is low
and she depends on the positive aspects
of others for support.

Character Turnaround

When I first created Zoey, my first
thoughts was that she needed
to be very colorful with an
positive, energetic, and outgoing
appearance. I wanted her to
seem like a polar opposite of
Maya. Yet on the inside, she
lacks a positive image of herself
in order to emphasize the idea
of “Don’t judge a book by its
cover”.

As it is being developed, the story and characters of Trianima, will be produced
into a graphic novel series that I plan to publish upon completion. What I plan to
accomplish through this story and it’s characters, is to develop an open-minded
perspective of the world, of other people, and especially of themselves.
Trianima takes place in a fantasy setting that follows the story of Adem and Lilith.
Having opposing perspectives of themselves and their world, these adolescent
teens must work together to protect their world from destruction using the
powers that were passed onto them by the gods.

Other Works
The story of Itzel and Blackfeather
explores a fantastical setting where
humans are able to form contracts
with familiar spirits. The digital illustration
below on the left is Princess Itzel and her
familiar spirit, The Feathered Serpent. At
the bottom right is Blackfeather riding
on top of his familiar spirit, Raven.

AdemAdem’s character profile is still being
developed and therefore has received
a visual update. In the image above,
Adem is alongside one of the Trianima
spirits who brought the physical world into
existence, Behemoth. The image to the
left displays Adem in my anime chibi style.

Hello. My name is Darrion Dollesin and I am a character designer.
My passion for character design, unknowingly, began at a very young age.
As a child, I drew characters from various cartoons, anime, and video games,
which inspired me to create my own characters and their stories. I focused
on improving my drawing skills, and my characters remained as doodles in my
sketchbook.
For a long time I felt that my art was nothing more than a passionate
hobby until my last years in high school. At that time, I went through difficult
experiences that challenged my self-perception and the way I looked at
life. Consequently, I have developed a perception of the world that is not
just black and white. Every individual in this world is unique and is its own
character. Each has their own history, culture, relationships, personality,
perception of the world, and perception of themselves. These characteristics
have an effect on the choices that a character makes and how they act
upon another character’s choices. Therefore, the interaction between every
character’s choices creates and builds a complex network that binds them
all together. This perception of a world with a complex network of unique
individuals is a big part that motivates and inspires me to create and design
my own characters.
I want to design characters that reflect my perception of the world. Thus,
for every character I design, I like to explore and create characters that a
wide range of individuals can relate to. In particular, I like to focus on the
life challenges that my characters go through since everyone has their own
struggles in life. Therefore, I like to create characters that are challenged by
their own flaws and self-perception, by their relationships with others, and by
their position in society.

In order to create realistic and relatable characters based on their challenges
in life, I like to explore every aspect and detail. Just as every choice can have
an effect on others, every detail of a character will have some form of effect
on the character’s choices. When gathering and creating these details, I
use a spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets to
organize a profile of the character. I then explore and experiment with how
these details affect the character’s appearance. This process first starts out
as multiple pencil concept sketches. Then I take these concepts and explore
further how they are digitally rendered using Adobe Photoshop. My style is
influenced by anime, however no matter what style I choose to draw in, my
goal in drawing my characters is to effectively reflect who the character is
through facial expressions, posture, and movement.
Currently my goals are to graduate from my Sierra College with an Associates
Degree in Multimedia, Illustration, Graphic Design, and Studio Art, then
transfer to a 4 year program that will help advance my skills as a character
designer, an artist, and as a storyteller. My long term goals include a career in
character design as well as publishing my own graphic novel.
