Dear Darling Reader

Five years later and every issue of Darling still feels like a minor miracle – at first the fear of all those blank pages that need to be filled, the fretting and frustration that comes with running any small business, then the growing excitement as the first stories begin to take shape, the juggling of editorial, advertising and social pages, the dawning realisation that Wimbledon never runs out of amazing news and extraordinary views, the hectic days before deadline, and then, at last, holding in my hands the printed culmination of it all like a new born baby, and just as proud! And every time I say to myself, ‘This is the best of them all!’

Of course great stories like our exclusive with Sharlely Becker and her exciting life with Boris, Fine Cell, an organisation which teaches embroidery to prisoners in Wandsworth and our inspirational Victoria Nicols feeds my passion for this business. It’s often the extraordinary woman I come across daily – the mothers, wives, entrepreneurs who balance their lives on a knife’s edge that I salute and that inspire me. To all of you I say ‘thank you!’

So until the summer edition.

The Orangerie has been cleverly designed to bring the 34 acres of Cannizaro Park inside the hotel, adding a new al fresco dining experience. inspiring woman

Early DaysVictoria: I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland where I developed a passion for sailing and rugby, two sports I enjoy immensely, although I stick to spectating at rugby now. I left the Emerald Isle when I was in my early twenties and spent a few years working across Europe with Ernst and Young before meeting my husband, who is Scottish, and moving to London to start a new job with Deloitte Consulting. We lived in central London for a short time before getting married and then moved out to Wimbledon. We have been in Wimbledon for 5 years and it feels very much like home, especially now that we have started a family here. My favourite place is by far Wimbledon Common. I love the expanse of open space. It’s perfect for a picnic on a hot summers day or a brisk walk on a frosty morning. Every Boxing Day we have a ritual where we walk from the Windmill through the common to Richmond Park to watch the deer before heading to the pub for a pint of Guinness.

Serious StuffWhen I became pregnant, I was working in a senior position

for a Consultancy firm in the City. Although there were some women senior to me in the organisation who had families, it had never occurred to me the sacrifices they made handing over their children to nannies and nurseries, and missing some of the key moments of their children’s lives.

Once my daughter Freya was born, I realised that their choices would not work for me. Staying with my firm would have meant long hours, being willing to travel and work away from home for extended periods of time, and competing against people who were ready and able to do all these things. The reality is that whatever the best intentions of employers, for many women who are parents, the glass ceiling is still a reality.

When Freya was a few months old I set up the Mums on the Go website. Local mums I knew were telling me that it was hard to find out about things to do with their little ones in the area. So I decided to create a website which puts local child-friendly businesses and mums in touch with each other. To ensure that the businesses were truly child-friendly, I began meeting with

the owners to find out more about them. I was amazed to find out that the vast majority of people running these businesses were women in a similar situation to me. Many had been career women who had also made the decision to change direction once children arrived.

Over time I began to think about ways in which I could help these businesses succeed. I started to run Mums’ Night Off events

in the Village, which brought a number of businesses together in a fun venue for an evening and provided local mums with a good night out. I then expanded into day time events, launching the Little Kids Parties. During this time more and more businesses were joining up, and I decided to hold a market in the town centre to showcase them. With support from Love Wimbledon, I took over the Piazza outside Morrisons and held the Mums on the Go Summer Fair for two days last August. This then led to the Wimbledon Frost Fayre in November. Now I run a monthly artisan Food and Craft market called the Windmill Market on the second Saturday of every month in St Mark’s Church opposite Ely’s in

Wimbledon town centre. Like my other ventures, the market promotes local business, with all traders coming from Merton and its surrounding boroughs, something which makes it unique and benefits the local economy.

I’ve had great support from our local MP Stephen Hammond, the Chairman of Merton Chamber of Commerce, Andrew Wakefield, and the Leader of the Council, Stephen Alambritis. Last year Mums on the Go won the Highly Commended award for Best New Business at the Merton Business awards, which was a very proud moment!

On Tuesday 30th April Southside House in Wimbledon is hosting a special

one day exhibition and sale of beautiful hand sewn work from the charity Fine Cell Work. A social enterprise established in 30 UK prisons, Fine Cell Work works with skilled volunteers who train prisoners, 75% of them men, in paid, creative needlework that helps them leave prison with the confidence and financial

means to stop offending. The standard of the work is outstanding and in recent years the charity has been commissioned by interior designers such as Nina Campbell, English Heritage, the Jerwood Foundation and the Prince of Wales. In 2010 the ‘Wandsworth Quilt’ produced in HMP Wandsworth was exhibited in the hugely successful British Quilts exhibition at the V&A. Fine Cell Work have done commissions for

embroidered, shoes, bedspreads, rugs and quilts, as well as the beautiful embroidered cushions they are well-known for.

The event at Southside House (30th April) has been organised by Jacqui Wood, Cherry Conway-Hughes and Nicole Winterbourne, all Wimbledon residents and Fine Cell Work volunteer teachers at HMP Wandsworth. Jacqui and Cherry have been teaching embroidery

to prisoners at Wandsworth prison for over ten years. Their dedicated work was recently the subject of a documentary piece on BBC2’s Culture Show and was recognised last autumn as part of Fine Cell Work’s London volunteer group with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest honour that can be given to UK volunteer groups and the equivalent of an MBE for an organisation.

“We’re thrilled Southside House has invited Fine Cell Work to hold this event.” says Jacqui “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to see for themselves the quality and

imaginative work produced in prisons being showcased in a unique and beautiful setting”.

Jacqui and Cherry will be giving a talk on their work at the Southside House event at 2pm, 30th April. www.finecellwork.co.uk

We met at Lilly’s (Boris’s nickname for her), gracious

home looking out on the bleak, wintry common on a freezing day in March. She had been bright and bubbly on the phone, and was even more charming and delightful in the flesh. If it weren’t for the classic looks of the model she used to be, and the fact she was married to one of Wimbledon’s most fabulous celebrities, I could have mistaken her for any one of our local yummy mummies. She was generous with her time, and happy to chat away quite unaffectedly about her early years, her famous husband, and her life in Wimbledon.

The early years

I was born in Holland. When I was three both my parents were killed in a car accident, so my sister and I were raised by my grandparents. I’ll always be very, very grateful to them. Rotterdam was a small town, and I was always an explorer. So luckily I was scouted by an Italian model agency when I was a teenager. My aunt had to accompany me to Milan because I was under eighteen. Then I

realised it was great way to make money and have a lot of fun! It was tough, but I had a great time. You have so much more energy when you’re young. I came to London hoping to work here, but it didn’t work out and it’s a hard place to be poor! Then I saw an ad in the Evening Standard – I remember it like yesterday – to train to become a

croupier. When an opportunity came to work abroad I jumped at the chance and ended up working as a croupier in Israel. I made good money, but I realised that my life was drifting, and I decided to try to pursue my original dream of modelling and travelling. That’s how I ended up in Miami, where I lived and worked until I met Boris.

interview

Meeting Boris

It was a Sunday afternoon at a sports cafe in Miami, a casual place where you didn’t need to dress up. Boris arrived in his car and got out, and my girlfriends and I recognised him immediately. But I wasn’t at all phased by celebrities by then. He noticed me and he asked the owner of the café, who was a friend of his, for my number. I made him call me for three months. I knew what he wanted, of course, and I was determined not to make it easy for him. It was only when a mutual friend contrived a “chance meeting” at a restaurant that we finally met up again. We played telephone-tag after that; he would phone and I wouldn’t answer, or I would phone and he wouldn’t pick up. Eventually we arranged a dinner meeting. I turned up 45 minutes late on purpose. It was really weird when we just clicked. I thought to myself, ‘Hey, he’s actually kind of sweet’. It was one of those dates when you start speaking and you never stop, and with never an awkward moment, we went from starter, to main course, to dessert, and then coffee. Eventually the restaurant was empty and we got kicked out. It turned out we’d been living in the same building and we’d never bumped into each other! It was the beginning of our love story.

Wimbledon

I remained in Miami and he was living in Switzerland, so it became one of those long

distance relationships. Eventually I moved to Zurich to live with him. We were travelling all the time because of his work. We decided to get married. Or rather, he just decided. He said, ‘Okay, we’re going to get married.’

We then decided to move to London. When Boris persuaded me to look at Wimbledon I was happily surprised! It reminded me of when I was little, the horse-riding, the parks, bike-riding, easy access to the city, and lots of freedom for the kids. I love the Village. I love my butcher (Butcher & Grill) and he knows how I like my chicken! Now I know almost everybody. We love the local shops and places: Matches, St Cassien, San Lorenzo, Côtes, Aubaine, Lulu Blonde and others. Cannizaro House is beautiful, the gardens and the restaurant. I put all my friends up there when they visit!

The future

I want to fill the house with children! I like staying fit, dabbling with modelling, and supporting Boris. It’s great fun doing TV shows with him, travelling with him, and then being able to take off my make-up and just be a mum. More than anything, I love being a mother. Now I have toddler apps on my phone, and wherever we go I’ve got something for my son to play with. When we fly he plays on an iPad so he keeps learning. He’s got more books than toys, but I know it’s

important for him to learn all the new technology. I love the idea that he’s going to grow up speaking like a proper little English boy. But I don’t like him calling me ‘mummy’ the way the English do. I prefer ‘mama’ like in Holland. As for the food, I love sausage and mash, Sunday roasts – and full English breakfasts, especially after a long night out! I like the English designers, the different styles at Portobello Market, for example, the Kate Middleton look, flower dresses and wellies, the Kate Moss look, LK Bennett – you can play with English fashion and be anything you want.

money

Simple and manageable money tips to get you in control of your cash. Often by now,

New Year’s Resolutions have been made, attempted and long forgotten! When it comes to money, everyone knows that they need to be doing more than they are. This easy-to-use guide will help you sort out the fact from the fiction and finally make your money work for you.

1) Cash Is NOT King! Many women prefer the safety of cash however they forget that cash loses its value over time. Inflation is a measure of the increase in cost of goods and services. So if you receive 2.5% interest in your cash yet inflation is 3.5% the buying power of your money is eroded by 1%. To top it all off, don’t forget that interest on cash is taxable unless it is in an ISA.

Cash does however have its place. You should have 6 months worth of outgoings saved in cash i.e. if your outgoings are £2000 per month you will need £12,000 saved in cash. This is to cover unforeseen emergencies.

2) 70/30 RuleThis is not something that is

going to happen overnight but a target of 70% of your monthly income should be spent on today and yesterday (i.e. debt) and 30% needs to go towards your future and creating a safety net. Once you have saved sufficient cash you should divide the 30% as follows:

a) 5% towards your safety net – protect your income, your health, your mortgage and your family.b) 10% needs to be invested for the medium term. This should be invested in a tax efficient manner and reviewed regularlyc) Finally 15% at least should be going to your long term savings i.e. your retirement.

3) One Size Doesn’t Fit Forever! The stock market is continually moving; therefore the investment options you chose today aren’t always going to be the best forever. Regular reviews for your medium term and long term pots are imperative and don’t forget

your work pension too! Within 5-10 years of retirement, priority shifts from growth to capital preservation. Therefore you need to reduce your risk and increase your exposure to less volatile investments e.g. gilts, bonds and cash.

NEW YEAR NEW SKIN!Our Spring Resolution You Will Sticking To!

Maeve McCrossan

Joining the gym, going on a diet and giving up chocolates all seem like reasonable New Year’s

Resolutions don’t they? How many of us actually stick to them or furthermore, enjoy sticking to them? Well, this year, why don’t you start as you mean to go on by looking after that beautiful face of yours?

Grip Hair & Body is the only Salon in the Wimbledon area to offer exclusive Luxury Organic Facials using products from the John Masters Skincare Range. Designed by our resident beauty guru Peter, starting with a full deep cleanse, you will experience an invigorating, yet gentle Jojoba exfoliation, preparing the skin for light extractions. A stress relieving back massage and the application of hot stones is followed by a firming facial massage which relaxes muscles and allows deep penetration of the organic ingredients. After applying an Organic masque treatment, Peter’s magical hands will massage your shoulders and hands using Organic essential oils. To complete this amazing treatment, Organic serums, oils and creams are applied to leave your skin feeling youthful, fresh and protected. 75 mins of pure heaven!

If you didn’t already know, organic treatments and products are growing fast in the UK with more and more people realising their health benefits. Our ancestors, after all, were using natural plant extracts for years weren’t they? Did them nothing but good!

Still not convinced? Well with £15 off your first, full facial with Peter what have you got to lose? Alternatively, our 30 min ‘Moroccan Clay Clearing Facial’ or ‘Mandarin Moisture Drench Facial’ are ideal starting points if you are new to the John Masters Range.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Your skin dries out overnight so needs to be kept moisturised and hydrated. Try using John Masters ‘Mandarin Maximum Moisturiser’ mixed with 2-3 drops of John Masters ‘100% Organic Argan Oil’ over your face and neck after cleansing before bedtime. You will wake up in the morning feeling brand new!

I love the daffodil. It’s a great time of year when those early yellow carpets appear all over the place – in gardens, on roundabouts, half way up motorway embankments and

other odd places. But ignore its after care demands, and the daffodil reputation of ‘dancing and fluttering in the breeze’ will be dented.

The first golden rule is to remove the fading flower heads before they have time to look really scruffy and start to squander vital energy by producing seeds that you’ll then not use. So, after flowers have passed their best, remove the complete stem.

The second golden rule is, do not under any

circumstances remove the leaves at this stage. The plant desperately needs to be given time for the leaves to die down naturally so the remaining starches and sugars can be returned for safe keeping in the bulb.

Also, please try and resist the temptation to tie the leaves neatly into clump-like knots. This would be a good time to give the plants a feed with a high potassium liquid fertilizer such as Phostrogen (NPK: 14:10:27).

Summer’s coming! Body ready?

Page 23: Darling Magazine - Wimbledon

The one thing you know for certain about organising a Summer Party, is not to rely on the weather! But don’t let that phase you, otherwise none of us would

ever party. Summer Parties are such fun.

The right date is important - avoiding sports occasions that may continue till mid-evening e.g. Wimbledon Tennis etc. Send your invites out immediately. A good theme gets your guests into the swing of the event. Planning your perfect party is great fun – make loads of lists:

1. Décor: Is there a theme or maybe just colour theme to pull it all together – balloon trees, flowers, tablecloths, napkins, coloured glassware.

2. Menu: The favourite for the summer, are BBQ’s – there is nothing so appealing as the smell of food cooking on a charcoal BBQ to open the appetite, delicious! Maybe go for a buffet menu or substantial canapés menu, such as mini fish and chips served in a cone , mini burgers etc – these are also great fun and as the name denotes, must be substantial, so that your guests have a good meal. 3. Band/Disco: This is personal choice. Live music is great and really gives a fantastic atmosphere. A good Disco also gives a wonderful “get up and dance” feel.

4. Marquee: If you want to ensure you are covered (literally) by any eventualities with the weather. They come in all shapes and sizes.

5. Equipment Rental: Ensure that all crockery, cutlery, tablecloths, napkins and glasses all match. Lots of colours are available for linen ware. An example is, if you were having a Moroccan theme, you may like to have “wild and wacky” colours – different table cover colours such as Tango Orange,

Sunshine Yellow, Fuchsia Pink, Lime Green. What a wow effect!

6. Caterer: choose carefully and explain your thoughts for the party and what you want to achieve – they will come up with good ideas – I do!

Chameleon with your look, you ‘transform as you perform’. What role does fashion play in your life? What does your wardrobe look like?" I spent ten years in art schools. Image comes as second nature! Fashion and performance on stage should totally fit and match the music. I believe that image and sound totally intertwine. In order to get a retro look I'll put on my 1940s frocks, petticoat, pin-curl my hair the

old fashioned way, paint my lips bright red and swag the total vintage look “à la Marilyn”! La Boutique's fashion is contemporary. I crimple my hair, wear bright and colourful outfits, with totally crazy platform shoes Lady Gaga style, whilst keeping it all rather stylish and chic. Lady Gaga understands the importance of image from the start. More than a singer, she is a complete artist, a “universe” of her own,

in which music and fashion are inseparable. My wardrobe is actually an entire room! You’ll see a selection of vintage dresses and petticoats, tailored jackets, “basics” like LBDs, many hats that I unfortunately rarely wear, and a massive quantity of shoes, most of which I cannot walk 10 meters in without getting horrid blisters. I call them my “photo shoot” shoes!

It is never too late to start and it can take you as far as your dreams take you. And Aurora has done just that!

Couples coaching is

not for when you’re heading for the scrap heap. It’s to flag up

any areas that need attention before they cause real damage or ruin the enjoyment of your journey together.

Long term relationships come under pressure from busy lives, work stress, money worries, health problems, parenting etc. With all of that going on, it’s easy to ignore your relationship and just assume it will be ok. However external pressures can really take their toll, gradually eroding the fun, love and passion that brought you together.

Couples coaching can help to remedy that. Remember it’s not psychotherapy, it won’t cause any problems that don’t already exist and there is a focus on the future rather than the past. You

will jointly design your future relationship, discover common goals, agree what’s important and figure out how to make it happen.

There’s no judgement or blame involved and the good news is that you are both (at least partially) right. And yes, that does mean your partner is actually right too!

Your first visit is entirely complimentary.

health

Why is sleep so important for our children's health? Our teenagers spend so much time on computers both at school and at home, use their mobile phones a great deal and as a result are often wired before bedtime and cannot go to sleep easily. When they finally do sleep it is often not the deep restful sleep they need as they are growing up. Electromagnetic stress disturbs their energy and our energy greatly. They may wake up tired, moody and stressed which is painful to see in young people. If they could go to sleep more quickly and sleep deeply it could be life changing in many cases.

The Nikken Sleep System combines the energy of the Earth (magnetic technology) and the energy of the sun (Far-Infrared Technology), a combination of features that assist the processes of physical

and mental recharging that form the basis of sleep. It helps take the stress out of the body while we sleep and encourages the sleep that helps your body restore itself naturally.

Who are Nikken, and how does the Sleep System work?Nikken is one of the top providers of energy and wellness products in Japan and was established over 35 years ago and is now in over 30 countries. The Kenko (health) Sleep System features a grid of magnets that replicate the Earth’s magnetic flow, producing a cocoon of magnetism that envelops you. This helps restore the natural balance between the sleeper and the physical world.

Do you use the Sleep System yourself ?I have been using the Nikken Sleep System for several years on myself and my family with amazing results. We all have more energy, feel rejuvenated and energized when we wake up every morning! Please call for a free demonstration of the Sleep System or ask for details on our regular Wellness Talks in Wimbledon at the Antoinette

With a brand new venue for 2013, now is the time for new and existing blood donors in Raynes Park and Wimbledon to make a date to donate.

Dundonald Church, in Kingston Road, will host its first ever blood donation session on 7 May. Or for an alternative, sessions are taking place at the Sacred Heart Church, in Edge Hill, Wimbledon, on 11 March and 20 May. All sessions will run from 2pm - 4.30pm and 5.30pm - 8pm.

John Canning, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Merton,

said: “The new venue will give donors a new option for appointments and make it more convenient for local people to to give blood. Donors also have the option of travelling to the permanent blood donation suite in Tooting.”

Every year 225,000 new donors are needed to replace existing donors who drop out of the system.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

To book an appointment or to register contact 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk.

Is your house too small for you and your growing family? Are your parents finding their house too

large now the children have moved out? The answer might be to swap house with your parents.

The benefits of “property swapping” between parents and their children can be considerable. Apart from resolving the problem of house too big versus house too small it can also represent good inheritance tax (IHT) planning. In this way parents might be able to pass more assets onto their children free of inheritance tax.

However as with any legal transaction it is essential you take independent legal advice, as your circumstances may differ from others and it is important that you understand all the rules. Below Chris Thurlow, Partner at Hart Brown discusses the benefits and pitfalls of “property swapping”.

Inheritance tax Often the parents’ home is worth more than their children’s house. If that is the case and the parents swap houses with their child, there may be an element

of gifting (i.e. the excess in value between the two properties is given as a gift to the child). This gift could be taken into account on the death of the parents if the parent has not survived long enough following the gift. Whether there is an IHT liability will also depend on whether the exchange is permanent or whether the parents want to keep an interest in their property. In those circumstances it would form part of their estate on their demise.

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT)Even though no cash would be changing hands, SDLT may be payable on the open market value of the lower value property. Any SDLT would be payable by the children as “purchaser” of the larger property. This is a complicated area of law which is frequently changing. It is important to ensure that this is checked before any action is taken.

MortgagesIf either party has a mortgage this can complicate matters. The lenders must agree and the mortgage may have to switch over too. This could impact the SDLT position.

Nursing home fees If the property swap is primarily because the parents want to give more assets to their children they could be seen by the local authority as deliberately depriving themselves of assets. Local Authorities take different views on the disposing of assets but it could become an issue should one of the parents need to go into care. Parents should look at this in the context of their whole welfare planning and ensure they have sufficient to provide care for themselves should they need it.

WillsWhenever someone’s estate changes in size or make-up always look at the effect it might have on their will. What if there are other children? How do you balance giving a property to one child and not the other? How will this be reflected in their will?

If you are considering swapping your primary residence with your parents or children, independent legal advice is essential.

Who are you? My name is Neil Norton and after spending 12 years working for high-end companies and furniture brands, I decided to set up Open Plan Designs in 2010 and offer clients a truly bespoke service myself. Any size, material or finish without restrictions. We make bespoke living spaces. That could mean kitchens, wardrobes, vanity units, home offices, storage or something else entirely. Basically, if you want any kind of high-end, made-to-measure furniture, we can produce it.

What do you offer that other furniture companies can’t? Choice, primarily. If you want rose-pink kitchen cabinets, that’s what you’ll get! If you’d like your wardrobes lined with

walnut or cedar, we can do that, too. We’ll work with you to establish exactly what it is you’re after – we even negotiate with builders and suppliers on your behalf to reduce your stress levels. And then we’ll make it to the finest possible standards. ‘No’ is not a word in our vocabulary. And because we don’t pay rents on large showrooms, we can offer value for money. Bespoke furniture doesn’t necessarily have to mean bespoke prices.

It’s one thing you telling me how brilliant you are. What do your previous clients say? Lots of nice things, luckily. We pride ourselves on building good relationships with clients, and many remain friends long after the project has finished.

‘It was great working with Open Plan Designs. Neil was an excellent communicator and we created a kitchen that I’m more than happy with.’ Broosk Saib, Interior Designer

OK, I’m interested. What happens now?We will come to your home and carry out a comprehensive lifestyle audit, finding out exactly what your personal style and tastes are. That way, together we can come up with a design you love. Once we’ve agreed a budget, we’ll draw up plans to show you where everything will go and exactly how your furniture will look. The beauty of having it made-to-measure is that we can work around any problem areas or difficult spaces.

Under grey skies and bitter winds, something wonderful can still happen at the green baize. Watch how a terrible suit is transformed into the vital extra tricks.

North-South bid 4♠ almost in slow motion; West led 9♦. South cannot trump diamonds in dummy, since he will be using his master trumps so, having counted eight top tricks, he decided to try to establish dummy’s club suit. Trying to set up a long suit in dummy is nearly always the best way to seek extra tricks.

He won the lead, cashed A♣ and led 2♣, which lost. West switched to a trump and the declarer won in dummy and ruffed a low club in hand. To his delight, both opponents followed, leaving dummy with the last two clubs. He drew the last trumps and cashed his winning 6♣ and 7♣, bringing home the optimistic, but excellent game contract.

My name is Alexander Loizos Papoutes and I am a British/Cypriot who was born and bred in Wimbledon village. I fell in love

with learning Judo at school which led to my dream of going to Japan in order to travel, learn the Japanese language, and continue my training. I spent 6 months on my gap year there and another year as an exchange student at a Japanese university in Tokyo. I was exposed to Japanese education throughout my degree course and time visiting various schools all over Japan. Here are my thoughts.

One thing that all parents know is the importance of their children’s education and well being. The Japanese are a nation that understands and takes this notion very seriously. As a linguist, student and traveller of Japan I continuously encountered the word isshinndoutai, which literally means in Japanese, “One in Mind, Body and Soul”. Although this notion was the essence of the way of the samurai, it is still very much apparent in Japan’s society and education today.

The basic school system in Japan is comprised of elementary school (lasting six years), middle school (three years), high school (three years), and

university (four years). Education is compulsory only for the nine years of elementary and middle school; however 98% of students attend senior school. Students must take highly prestigious and meritocratic based exams in order to enter senior school and then university.

From the very early stages of a Japanese student’s life in elementary school right the way through to employment, one very important idea that closely interlinks with the development of the soul and mind is unity and conformity. This is designed to help students, and later on employees, to work together and succeed as a group rather than as an individual like we are taught in the west. Although, over the last decade a greater emphasis has been put on the development of a student’s individuality, traditionally it has always been about selflessness and conforming to the group.

This is clearly demonstrated even from the early stages of the child’s education. Japanese elementary classes, for example, are divided into small teams for various activities. Every day the children in their designated groups are taught to clean the classrooms, halls and yards of their schools. The students are then made to have lunch together with their teachers in the classrooms, enjoying meals prepared by either the school or the local lunch centre. Small teams of students then take turns to serve lunch to their classmates in order to help promote this sense of selflessness and unity.

One thing that always struck me as extraordinary was the level of independence that these young students had with regards to going to and from school. Children who go to public schools go to the school in their local district. Since most school districts are small, school buses usually aren’t used (except for field trips) and parents don’t drive their children, instead they walk to and from school. In Tokyo, this takes about 5 to 15 minutes. Many either walk or ride bicycles if the distance is not too great. In other cases, students must take public buses and trains, often changing lines several times in order to reach their destination. It is not uncommon for students to spend two or more hours each day on public transportation. The school day begins at 8:30, so students may leave

Bob Tait from TTP Harley Street’s Education Services division, has been

talking about substance misuse to schools both across the UK and abroad for over 25 years. They were recently invited to talk at Coombe Girl’s School, Marymount and King’s College in Wimbledon. To understand just why they are so well received, all you need to do is sit in on one of their modules.

Engaging and giving clear information to children and young people on substance misuse and the risks involved is now more important than ever. It enables them to make healthy, informed choices, both during their school years and in later life.

Bob: There are literally hundreds of so-called highs, each with its own street name, some illegal, some alarmingly not. Each comes with its own risks, addictive traits and side effects.

Unfortunately, with the rapid advent of a vast number of so-called ‘legal highs’ (and there are new ones appearing

almost on a daily basis), the task has become that much more complex. Simply because a drug or stimulant is termed a legal high doesn’t mean it’s safe – far from it. Most are full of untried, untested ingredients, with little or no knowledge of their short or long-term effects on the health and wellbeing of the user.

So who should be doing the talking and to whom?

Any dialogue on substance misuse should involve and include parents, teachers, guardians, friends, in fact anyone and everyone involved in influencing the welfare of a young person.

When we first started going into schools, the emphasis was very much on engaging the students, now we focus just as much on parents and teachers, in fact we’ve designed specific programmes in order to do so. With parents in particular, there appear to be two major obstacles. The first is the fear of knowing a lot less than their child on the subject and therefore appearing ignorant. The second

is all about being able to hold a frank and open discussion without appearing threatening or confrontational.

Oh, and by the way, just in case you haven’t Googled them yet,California Cornflakes are Cocaine Rocks and Sharks are Crystal Methamphetamines.

Since its inception in 2007 Crown Lane Studio has been an inspirational ‘music house’ for musicians, both from this community and the wider music industry.

After a near-death experience where John Merriman (director) and his wife were swept down a river in a car, they decided to throw everything into building their studio. It has now grown to include creative rehearsal spaces; video and management support; an educational program and wider support for community activities in the area.

John has been nominated for a Merton Civic Award for his work with the local community and the arts. “Using my knowledge and skills to bring a community together, by coordinating things like the Morden Town Centre Jubilee Street Party and subsequent Christmas Street Party means that relationships between businesses

and the community are formed. This of course helps business, but also changes the feel of the whole community.”

John plans to continue his involvement with the community, and is currently working with excluded children from the borough’s schools, as well as composing a piece, and rehearsing it with pupils from Perseid and Cricket Green Special Schools for a performance later this year at the Royal Albert Hall.

point of view

Here then, is my inventory of what our generation has ever done for them:

• Disneyland• Mobiles• Holidays in nice places where it doesn’t rain

every day• Clothes from Top Shop, and not knitted by

Grandma• Wider access to university education• Teachers who don’t throw chalk at you• Social tolerance and diversity• Lifts - to school, to sport, to the station, to

parties, to friends, lifts, lifts, lifts, endless lifts• Pizza Express

Actually, you can probably add to this list at will: Oxfam, Google, the cup-cake renaissance, films with George Clooney in, and so forth. We have been amazing.

And here is how our legacy is actually shaping up for them:

• Environmental catastrophe• Unaffordable housing• Graduate unemployment• A collapsing national health service• The death of Faith• Terrorism• Krispy Kreme• Debt

Oops. You see where I’m going with this - every benefit conferred upon our children has come at a some sort of hideous, equal and opposite cost. We didn’t know! We thought we were spoiling you, but not in a bad way! We’re sorry! We meant well! At least we didn’t send you over the top at Passchendaele! But we hope that, in thirty years’ time, you will have sorted it all out and can hand on something better to your children. Especially Disneyland.

They tuck you up, your Mum and Dad…By Kate Greenhalgh

As they grow up, our little chicks are taking over the media; new voices lifted against us, how we have messed everything up for them. It’s a bit

annoying really: one minute you are getting up at the crack of dawn to take them to their riding lessons, the next you are being criticised for handing them a poisoned chalice. Poor old helicopter parents have turned into the asbo generation who squandered the planet; and worse, we are going to live to at least 100, costing an absolute fortune because our pensions are worthless; guzzling our way through our offspring’s inheritances in the form of anti-dementia medication and expensive care homes, and being a pain at Christmas time.
