Dark Souls 2 is a veritable treasure trove of shiny trinkets and glorious gear. It’s many menus are 

filled with stats and numbers just waiting for you to plunder and ponder over for hours, deciding 

which of your sixty  four helms  is  the exact correct one  for  the situation. While  it’s easy  to sail 

through the game and simply take what you find along your merry way (well, perhaps ‘merry’ isn’t 

the correct term for a game as tough as this), there are many rewards waiting for those who choose 

to dig a little deeper for the more rare items available. There are hundreds of cool pieces of loot, 

but this is a list of fifteen bits of gear you may not have found your first time around and one or 

two treasures that have cool effects you may not have been aware of. So sit by the bonfire, friends 

and sunbros, as we learn about some of the coolest items in Dark Souls 2 that you should definitely 

check out!   

15. The Invisible Aurous Set

Since you lose all of your accumulated souls when you die, it’s likely that the counter on the bottom 

right of your screen will often read as roughly ’0′. However, before running off to collect that sweet, 

sweet soul currency from the bloodstain in front of that particularly harrowing demon, a hidden 

set  of  armour  awaits  those with  no  souls  to  their  name.  After  you’ve  spent  16000  souls  on 

Mauglin’s various armours in Majula, returning to him with no souls will prompt him to take pity 

and award you with the invisible Aurous set. To the untrained eye of those pesky undead enemies 

you’ll be coming at them in your undies, but little do they know you’re packing this very cool set 

of gear. As armour sets go it’s fairly mundane, but it does give you extra equip load, adding up to a 

total of an extra 5% with the whole set on, which is certainly a nice buff. Being able to display your 

butt and protect it at the same time is also an excellent bonus.   

14. The King Set

This is the set of poor King Vendrick, and if you thought acquiring it would be as easy as picking his 

gear from his corpse, you are going to disappointed. It requires a little bit of backtracking to the 

Shrine of Amana, where you can find a hidden path just a little way beyond the second bonfire in 

the area. Once Vendrick  is defeated, which  is no easy feat considering the fallen King can quite 

comfortably kill off most builds in one or two swings, you can open this hidden pathway and gain 

access to his armour. With its dark colours, layered design and awesome black cloak, it’s easily one 

of the coolest looking sets of armour in the game. It even comes with a crown to let those pesky 

demons know who’s boss. The included shield also provides a nice upgrade to the Drangleic Shield, 

a likely component of most sword‐and‐board builds throughout the game thus far. f you really want 

to  cosplay  as  Vendrick,  you  can  also  acquire  his  Ultra  Greatsword  by  trading  his  soul  to 

Weaponsmith Ornifex.   

13. Moonlight Greatsword

The entirety of this entry could be written in the manner of Benhart of Jugo, the Scottish‐accented 

knight  found  in Dark Souls 2…but that wouldnae be a good  idea, pal. Benhart  is  interesting  for 

more reasons than his fun accent, however. There’s also the matter of that gigantic blue sword he 

speaks so highly of and swings so very gracefully in battle. Those with an affinity for large weapons 

likely vowed that they would one day pry that beautiful specimen from Benhart’s cold, dead hands 

if that’s what it took to acquire. Luckily, the sword Benhart wields is a fake – but the real deal is 

well within the players grasp. You’ll need the Paledrake soul acquired from Duke’s Dear Freja (yes, 

the giant two‐headed spider monstrosity) in New Game +. It can then be given to Weaponsmith 

Ornifex to build the Moonlight Greatsword. Just be sure not to flaunt your new weapon in front of 

Benhart or you’ll break the mighty Scotsman’s heart.   

12. The Havel Set

Havel the Knight is a popular character from the first Dark Souls, who likely wiped the floor with 

you thanks to that outlandishly robust armour set and gigantic weapon. His set was a favourite for 

slow‐moving tank players due to its super‐high stats, and it can be found once again in the second 

game! You can find this ultra heavy gear by first acquiring the Forgotten Key  in the Black Gulch. 

This  is done by defeating the two giants hiding  in a cave underneath the section  leading to The 

Rotten boss fight. Once that’s done, head to The Gutter and locate a hidden door behind a circle 

of those incredibly pleasant poison spitting statues, and you will soon be a proud owner of Havel’s 

armour.  It  takes  a  lot  of  strength  to  equip  but  if  you’ve  got  the muscle,  it’ll  repay  you with 

outstanding defensive power and poise. You’ll likely be fatrolling (the term given to players whose 

armour is too heavy and therefore causes them to dodge with a painfully slow roll) but who needs 

to dodge when they’re a walking, talking tank?   

11. Handmaid’s Ladle

“He who chooses this as a weapon either faces extenuating circumstances or has an odd sense of 

humor. If you care for your life, leave this one in the kitchen.” Thus reads the item description of 

the Handmaid’s Ladle, retrieved from Milibeth in Things Betwixt upon defeating all three Cyclops 

enemies in the area. There’s nothing special about this item. It does not have a hidden power which 

is unleased upon upgrading or  infusing or defeating a certain amount of enemies. The task this 

ladle is best for is serving soup. Dark Souls 2 has no soup mechanics but if it did, this weapon would 

be  number  one  on  the  list  of  Best  Items  To  Serve  Dark  Souls  2  Soup With.  So  why  is  this 

unremarkable, laughably weak weapon on this list? Well, you simply haven’t lived until you have 

bat tered The Last Giant in the ankles with nothing but a massive spoon and walked away the victor. 

That is why.   

10. Sun Sword

For many Dark Souls players, the phrase “Praise the Sun” brings warmth to the soul. It’s the catch‐

phrase of the lovable Solaire of Astora, one of the ally NPCs which appeared in the first game. His 

covenant focuses on “jolly co‐operation” and his summoned form takes on a bright, golden shine. 

In Dark  Souls 2, his  covenant  is  accessed  through  a  crumbled  statue deep  in  the poison‐filled 

Harvest Valley. Clearly, the brotherhood of sunlight isn’t quite the bastion of jolly co‐operation it 

used to be, but joining up and fighting alongside your fellow Undead in need will net you Sunlight 

Medals. Offering 20 of these medals at the sunlight altar will award you with the Sun Sword. It’s 

unremarkable at first, but once it’s been upgraded, the Sun Sword provides great scaling for players 

who have invested in their Strength and Dexterity stats. So, even though Solaire is long gone and 

his journey to find the sun met its unfortunate end in Dark Souls, the player can carry the torch for 

this joyful soul with a Sun Sword of their very own.   

9. The Saint Set

The Dark Souls series is full of deceptive characters whose motives may not be what they seem at 

first. While you can rest easy knowing the talking cat in Majula is exactly as awesome as she appears 

at first glance, there’s at least one settler in the sunset‐soaked town with darker motives. Her name 

is  Licia,  and  though  she  seems  like  a  simple pilgrim  looking  to  share miracles with her  fellow 

outcasts, her true motives are fueled by her greed and desire for souls. It can be assumed that the 

miracles she possesses were stolen, and there’s one reason she’s so eager for you to buy them 

from her: sweet, sweet money. Later into the game, you’re given the chance to confront her about 

these dirty deeds, and upon taking her out, you’ll receive some pretty cool gear. The Saint set itself 

lacks much in defence, but the helm will allow one more slot on your spell bar – a very valuable 

buff indeed. You’ll also receive the Idol’s Chime, which is one of the earliest available hex‐based 

chime’s in the game. Getting this gear from that dirty liar is very satisfying indeed.   

8. Vanquishers Seal

So, you think you’re hardcore? You think you’re the best Dark Souls player there is, and no one can 

stand before your mighty prowess? The Vanquishers Seal better be  in your  inventory, or you’re 

lying.  To  acquire  this  ring,  you must  first  enter  the  Covenant  of  Champions. As  a  part  of  this 

Covenant, you won’t be able to summon help throughout the game, meaning all bosses will have 

to be taken down all on your own. Every enemy will also be made immediately tougher, so good 

luck with that. Next, you’ll need to collect 50 Awestones, dropped by various enemies and invading 

players. Once that’s done, your reward will be the Vanquishers Seal, a ring which ups the power of 

your bare fist attacks. That’s right – you will be granted the power to set swords and axes aside in 

favour of simply punches your foes in the face because you are a straight up bad ass. It’s also worth 

noting that there are items reserved for players who make it through the entire game without dying 

or using a bonfire. But… that’s crazier than fighting the final boss with the Maiden’s Ladle.   

7. Heide Knight Set

During the game, you’ll encounter three Heide Knight’s. They’re the guys with white cloaks who 

look utterly depressed and will only attack if you attack them first. They’ll also only spawn once, 

and during your first playthrough, you’ll get a different Heide weapon from each. The weapons 

themselves, especially the Heide Knight Sword thanks to being  found so early  in the game, are 

pretty handy. But did you know you can actually get hold of their armour? Once in New Game +, 

each knight has a chance to drop a piece of his armour rather than his weapon. Eventually, you too 

can  sit  in  the  corners  of  the world  of Drangleic,  sighing  deeply  and  only  emerging  from  your 

reflective musings when some random Undead come along trying to steal your stuff. Just bear in 

mind that these are not guaranteed drops, so equip your best item finding gear to minimize farming. 

Now go, fellow Heide Knights, and think deep thoughts with your sweet armour in tow.   

6. Moon Butterfly Set

This is one of the most ludicrous armour set in the Souls series as well as the most dangerous. If 

you think the greatsword that  is  larger than your character  is dangerous, you are wrong.  If you 

think  the spell  that  throws an all‐consuming  fireball  is dangerous: You are wrong. You see,  the 

Moonlight Butterfly set, which can be bought from Mauglin in New Game + after spending enough 

souls on his gear, will poison nearby friends… and foes. This means that hanging around next to a 

hammer‐weilding monstrosity will soon get him feeling queasy, but so will hanging around next to 

any of the friendly characters in Majula. The set also lengthens your jumps so that you may flutter 

gracefully through Drangleic like the pretty butterfly you were born to be.   

5. The Vengarl Set

Dark  Souls  2  is  not  much  of  a  philosophical  game,  with  only  a  hint  of  deeper  questioning 

penetrating the thick skin of  its dragons, demons and  ‘put the sword  in the face’ gameplay. But 

sometimes thought‐provoking characters and events occur, like killing Undead deep in the Gutter 

who were simply trying to scrape a living down in the dark, or questions of how far science can go 

in the interest of learning, as seen in Aldia’s Keep filled with twisted creations. And then, of course, 

there  is  Vengarl,  a  ferocious  warrior  whose  bloodlust  was  only  brought  to  an  end  with  the 

decapitation of his head. The player finds him lying on a pile of rocks in a quiet courtyard, and one 

gets a sense that  if he had the hands to write, he would be deep  into constructing some gnarly 

poems about peace and tranquility. Letting Vengarl tell the tale of his journey from warrior to well‐

wisher will prompt him to gift you with his unbelievably badass wolf helm. You can then find his 

headless  body  later  and  acquire  the  armour  he  donned  in  those  early  ‘ruthless  killer’  days, 

complete with bloody rags and a myriad of rips and tears that no doubt have interesting stories to 

tell of their own.   

4. Drangleic Set

This is an excellent set which many players might have missed out on early in the game thanks to 

being fairly well hidden. Many shield‐wielding players will likely have found themselves with the 

Drangleic Shield merged permanently to their left arm because of its 100% physical blocking, and 

the Drangleic Sword is a brilliant weapon for those looking to wield quality weapons, which benefit 

from both the strength and dexterity stats. The armour itself is also very good, though you’ll later 

find gear that offers more protection for the weight. Either way, the early hours of the game can 

be spent very comfortably in this set, and the sword and shield are used by many players right up 

until the final encounters. To find the Drangleic set, go beyond the second Pursuer arena and drop 

down the crumbled ramparts on the right. Your new Drangleic digs will be waiting for you there.   

3. Avelyn

For some men, one crossbow is not enough. What if an enemy were to come along for whom one 

bolt would simply not be enough? What  if time was of the essence?  It’s commonly known that 

crossbows are cumbersome to load. So, for those men, who need not one bolt, not two bolts, but 

three bolts…what options are there? There is one option. There is Avelyn. This three‐in‐a‐row firing 

crossbow is found in the Uncead Crypt, and though it lacks scaling that benefits putting points into 

particular stats for increased damage, using it to quick‐fire crossbow bolts directly into the muddy 

faces of those nasty fellows looking to chew on your limbs is incredibly satisfying.   

2. The Santiers Spear

This is a weapon with a very cool trick up its sleeve. It’s a spear that can be found in the Doors of 

Pharros, a trap‐riddled player vs. player area filled with doors waiting to be unlocked that often 

lead to tricks, but sometimes  lead to treasures. The Santiers Spear  is one of those treasures. To 

find it, look for a three‐sectioned door close to the Gyrms Respite bonfire. The spear has a large 

chunk of rock near its tip, but if you bash the durability down, that rock will fall off and the weapon 

will change significantly. It gains attacks from various movesets, including the spinning twinblade 

style attacks as well as spear attacks and curved sword attacks. This makes it incredibly versatile 

and very flashy. For players more into polearms than swords, this can be a very powerful weapon 

that at first seems to be as plain as they come..   

1. Ring Of Whispers

This is an interesting ring that’s available for purchase from the cat living in Majula, Sweet Shalquoir. 

The ring itself is not so much a secret, but its use certainly is. In the Shaded Woods area, a large 

man‐scorpion stands alone in a sandy arena. His name is Manscorpion Tark, suitably enough, and 

while an unaware player might mistake him for an enemy, this beast is actually a potential ally. To 

talk to him, you’ll need to equip the Ring of Whispers. Tark will then interact with you, and you’ll 

unlock the ability to summon him during the area boss fight. It’s a rough battle and he provides 

invaluable backup. The Ring of Whispers will make an eerie noise when enemies are near and it’s 

easy to assume that this is its only purpose if you aren’t aware of this secret use.
