MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 3, 2020) - West Virginia captured its first Big 12 Conference win of the 2020 season with a 27-21, double-overtime victory over Baylor. The defensive battle provided a back-and-forth chess match between the two defenses. West Virginia’s offense looked great on its opening drive, which was set up by a 29-yard kickoff return from Winston Wright Jr. The Mountaineers marched 70 yards in 15 plays for a 7-0 lead, and the 6:09 drive was capped by quarterback Jarret Doege’s 1-yard run. While the drive was impressive, the prob-lem for the Mountaineers was that they would not find the end zone again until late in the third quarter. Until then, West Virginia had to fight off three turnovers in the first half, as the defense snuffed out two of the three Baylor scoring opportunities off Mountaineer miscues. However, the Bears tied the game with 6:40 left in the first half, when quarter-back Charlie Brewer completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Sneed. The scoring drive was set up after Doege threw his second interception of the half, and the five-play, 30-yard drive sent both teams into the locker room tied at 7-7. The Mountaineers regained the lead at 14-7 behind running back Leddie Brown’s 1-yard run to end a 72-yard drive. Much like the opening drive, the WVU offense was impressive, running the ball eight times in the 11-play drive, highlighted by a 25-yard run from Alec Sinkfield. WVU used a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter to keep Baylor off the board, but the Bears tied the game with just 1:13 left to play on Brewer’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Josh Fleeks. In overtime, the Mountaineers converted a key fourth-and-1 with a 10-yard pass to tight end Mike O’Laughlin, setting up Doege’s 6-yard touchdown pass to receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton. The lead was short-lived, as Baylor tied the score on its first play to send the game into a second over-time. Brewer went straight to the air on the first play and found Ben Sims for a 25-yard scoring reception. In the second overtime, Baylor went back to the air on its first play, but this time Brewer was intercepted by WVU’s Tykee Smith, giving the Mountaineer offense the chance to win the game. West Virginia didn’t need a field goal, as four plays into the drive, Brown scored his second rushing touchdown with a 3-yard run, securing the Mountaineer victory. West Virginia was able to overcome four turnovers and was led by Doege with 211 yards passing and Brown’s 93 yards rushing. Receiver Sam James hauled in eight passes, while Tony Fields II recorded 10 tackles, two TFLs and one sack. Tackle Darius Stills earned national defensive player of the week honors for his 2.5 sacks and 3.5 TFLs. Baylor got for 229 yards passing from Brewer and three touchdowns, while the defensive effort was led by Terrel Bernard with 13 tackles and Jalen Pitre with 11 stops, two TFLs and one forced fumble. The Mountaineer defense was outstanding against the run, holding the Bears to just 27 yards rushing on 33 attempts. Baylor added 229 yards passing to total 256 yards of offense. West Virginia finished with 134 yards on the ground and 211 through the air for 345 yards of total offense. With the win, West Virginia improved to 6-3 all-time against Baylor.

LAST TIME AGAINST KANSAS: West Virginia 29, Kansas 24 LAWRENCE, KANSAS (Sept. 21, 2019) - West Virginia football coach Neal Brown got his first road win, first Big 12 win and first Big 12 road win all in one day as his Mountaineers downed Kansas, 29-24, at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Brown and Kansas coach Les Miles were coaching in their fourth game at their new schools, and the Jayhawks quickly showed the rest of the Big 12 how improved they were under their new head coach. However, West Virginia played well enough and did enough good things to garner the all-important road conference victory. Even though the Mountaineers were a five-point favorite, many critics saw this as a chance for Kansas to make a statement within the conference. West Virginia scored first and never relinquished the lead but for a stretch in the first half when Kansas pulled even at 7-7. WVU quarterback Austin Kendall engineered a 13-play, 71-yard drive that took a whopping 5:59 off the first-quarter clock and put the Mountaineers up 7-0, when Kennedy McKoy rushed in from 3-yards out. Kansas bounced back in the second quarter at the 12:06 mark and tied the game on a Kwamie Lassiter 28-yard touchdown reception from Carter Stanley. The Jayhawks moved 75 yards in seven plays to forge the tie. The score remained tied until the final seconds of the half as WVU kicker Evan Staley gave the visitors a 10-7 lead, going into the locker room, on his 37-yard field goal. Where the first half produced 17 points between the two teams, the second half saw a combined 36 points as both offenses got in gear. West Virginia took the opening possession of the third quarter 70 yards in 10 plays to up its advantage to 17-7. Tailback Martell Pettaway scam-pered in from 23 yards out for the score. The breathing room got tighter again as Kansas answered the Mountaineer touchdown with a 71-yard drive and a 23-yard field goal by kicker Liam Jones. Just like a classic boxing match, the two teams continued to trade big plays and scores. The Jayhawks tried an unsuccessful onside kick following the Jones field goal, and West Virginia an-swered with a field goal of its own. Staley’s second successful kick was good from 44 yards out, giving

the Mountaineers a 20-10 advantage with 4:20 left in the third. Kansas wasn’t to be outdone and fought back with the big play. It took just 12 seconds and one play for Stanley to connect with Andrew Parchment for a 75-yard bomb to ignite the Kansas faithful and pull the Jayhawks to 20-17. With the momentum clearly on the Jayhawks’ side, the Mountaineers kept their composure on the road and added a third Staley field goal, this one from 22 yards out for a 23-17 lead with 12:35 left to play. The visitors had the ball for 6:28 in the drive. 4:59 left. However, Kansas was far from done. The Jayhawks answered quickly with a 70-yard drive and a 3-yard touchdown catch by Parchment with 2:10 remaining. After a second failed onside kick by Kansas, WVU’s offense gained a first down before punting back to KU with 32 seconds left. The Mountaineer defense then held on for the win. Kendall finished his day completing 25-of-37 passes for 202 yards. The running back trio of McKoy, Pettaway and Leddie Brown combined for 183 yards and three scores. Since arriving in Morgantown in January 2019, Brown has covered much territory representing Mountaineer Football as its chief ambassador, ensuring the great story about his program is told to everyone. Brown did not leave a stone unturned, preaching his “All-In” Football, Family, Fun philosophy and encouraged every group, whether players, recruits, coaches, staff, alumni, boosters and Mountaineer Nation, to get on board. The culture of the football program has changed, the leadership is dynamic and the player develop-ment and buy-in rate is at a high level. Brown has implemented a “5th-Quarter Program” for the team to assist in the development of the total player. The pillars of the program are character de-velopment, leadership development, real life, social responsibility and career development. Another component of the 5th Quarter program is the Bridge Program. Its goal is to introduce the student-athletes to the college experience when they first enter WVU and then give them their final training and prepare them before they embark into life after graduation. Brown has supported and championed program leadership by the players and above all a dedication to the individual student-athlete. His mission has been to develop each player as a complete person, not only on the field, but off, and for each to contin-uously build themselves and their brand to make a difference in the world after their football career is finished. In September 2020, Brown was named the hon-orary head coach for the AFCA AllState Good Works Team, honoring him for his committment to leader-ship, the Morgantown community and Mountaineer Nation as a whole. Even though the Mountaineers finished 5-7 in what was called a transitional year, Brown has laid asolid foundation, as WVU showed improvement throughout the season and proved it’s ready to continue its upward climb in 2020. Now during the 2020 offseason, his message to the team has been to continue to “Trust the Climb” by coming to work ready to compete every day; continue to get better and together the program will be the most improved team in the country this year.In 2019, the Mountaineers finished the regular sea-son winning two of the final three games, at Kansas

State and at TCU, and had a 3-3 mark on the road, including a 3-2 road record in the Big 12 Conference. Five of Brown’s players were named to All-Big 12 postseason teams, and Colton McKivitz was named the Big 12’s Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year. McKivitz earned spots on two All-American teams - Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Second Team and the Associated Press’ Third Team, and Tykee Smith was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. McKivitz played in the Reese’s Senior Bowl, participated in the NFL Player Combine and was selected in the fifth-round of the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Keith Washington II played in the East-West Shrine Game, and Rex Sunhara participated in the NFLPA Collegiate All-Star Game. Brown, one of six FBS coaches to win 10 or more games in 2016, 2017 and 2018, was named WVU’s 35th head football coach on Jan. 5, 2019. He spent the previous four years as the head coach at Troy University (2015-18), compiling a 35-16 record, including 3-0 in bowl games. In his final three seasons, the Trojans posted a 31-8 record (.795), tying for the highest winning percentage nationally among non-Power 5 schools. Before Brown left after the 2018 season, Troy had won 17 of its last 20 games and 22 of its last 26 games. After directing the Trojans to the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship, Brown was honored as the league’s coach of the year. During his highly successful tenure at Troy, Brown’s signature wins included a 24-21 victory in 2017 at then-No. 22 ranked LSU in Baton Rouge, which snapped the Tigers’ 49-game non-conference home winning streak and a 24-19 win at Nebraska on Sept. 15, 2018. Also impressive was his team’s narrow 30-24 loss at eventual 2016 national cham-pion Clemson. In 2018, Troy finished 10-3, including a victory over Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The Trojans finished 7-1 in conference play and won five of their last six games. The 2017 campaign featured an 11-win season for Troy, including a win over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl. The Trojans once again finished with a 7-1 conference mark, earning Brown his first con-ference championship. Troy finished the season with the 27th most votes in the final Amway Coaches Poll, marking the highest final ranking by a Sun Belt Conference squad in league history. Troy faced seven bowl teams and posted a 6-1
