Social Thinking(Entering K-2)

There is nothing more important, nor as dif-ficult to teach our children, than personal problem solving, personal advocacy, and social relatedness to develop lasting friendships and be successful in the social world. Social Think-ing strategies teach increased self-awareness, recognition of how behaviors affect the way others perceive and respond to you, and con-nect how this affects your emotions, responses to, and relationships with others. Fun activities provide a safe context to practice processing social information and better adapt and re-spond to the people and situations around you.

This course is designed for the child who is frustrated by social communication and inter-action when in unstructured social situations, but is more capable in highly structured situa-tions. This class is not appropriate for a child with significant cognitive or language deficits.

Math Courses for High School Credit

Awarding CreditDHS grants credit for courses failed during any school year, if repeated and passed in summer school. A course may also be taken to improve a student’s grade.

Attendance: Courses for which grade changes or credit are awarded cover a great deal of work in a relatively short period of time. Unexcused absences will result in loss of credit. Excused absences are those involving illness, in which case a physician’s note is required. Other compelling circumstances will be judged by the Summer School Director as legitimate reasons for lateness or absence. Parent notes excusing a student for lateness or absence because of oversleeping or transportation difficulties are not considered excused absences. Lateness to class or excused absences from class will require a student to make up the time with the classroom teacher. Since summer school teachers are paid only for the number of hours they are teaching in the classroom, additional time with a student may require an additional fee negotiated by the parents of the student and the teacher. All courses taken for credit must be taken 2 hours a day, 5 days a week for 5 weeks Courses taken for a change of grade have the same attendance requirements. In the case of remedial courses, credit will be applied to either first semester or second semester, as needed. Credit is not available for any Darien student who has not completed grade 9.

Maximum Credit: Maximum credit for any approved high school course taken by any Darien High School student for grade change or credit during the Darien Summer School Program or any five week summer program will be set at .5 credit per course successfully completed. Students wishing to study for a full-credit should seek a 120-hour summer school course elsewhere.

Grade Point Average & Credit: A grade from the Darien Summer School will be weighted into the student’s GPA in the following manner: the summer school grade will not replace the original grade earned during the regular school year. However, the summer school grade weight times the point value of the grade will be entered in the student’s GPA. No additional credit will be awarded if credit was already earned: i.e., the received grade was above an “F” grade.

Eligibility Grades: The summer school grade will be used to determine eligibility to enter other courses during the regular high school year. The summer school grade will serve as an eligibility grade but not as a replacement grade.

“F” Grades: If a student earns a grade of F (no credit) for a single semester of the regular school year, the student may be awarded .5 credit with a passing grade during the Darien Summer School program. The new grade earned in summer school will be computed in the student’s GPA, but the original weight of F will remain in the GPA computation. It is recommended that a student earning an F grade in both semesters of a two-semester course retake the course in the regular program. Students failing both semesters of a two-semester course may take one semester for credit in summer school, but must repeat one semester in the regular session before becoming eligible to advance to the next level in the course sequence.

For the budding business-person. We learn by DOING. In our 5 sessions together, we literally take one, two or three business ideas, find the human resources to help get them off the ground, and the internet resources to do marketing and help with fulfillment. Every student becomes an “officer” in the business we create. (Adults become the consultants.) Starting one’s own business, even if unsuccessful, is “the best thing for a college application outside one’s transcript”, according to one consultant. Working on a small business venture is “one of the best things for self-confidence and self esteem that a parent can facilitate for a teenager”. This can be the start to many businesses and many ventures. Laptop computer required for all but the first session. Fee includes materials. The pitching portion will focus on developing such important pitching concepts as balance, stride, drive, arm slot, follow through, and arm maintenance. The pitching portion will be more mechanics based than throwing based so that players who are in - season will not overuse their arms. Instructors will use an individualized approach to enhance the learning experience for each player, and the consistent repetitions players will take during the week will develop tangible results. Players who are serious about developing their hitting and pitching skills will learn a lot from this camp! DSS Student Scholarhip FundDear Parents,

Each year there are local students who need to attend a summer school class for the purposes of improving their grades or skills in a particular subject and are unable to do so, because their parents cannot afford the cost of tuition. DSS receives some funding from several local agencies to help these children; however, scholar-ship funds are never enough to meet the demand for assistance. Parents are encouraged to help us assist those children by making a small donation when they register their children for courses. Even the smallest donation, when combined with others, can make a huge difference in the life of a child. All donations go directly to pay-ing tuition for students. Your help is always greatly appreciated.

If you would like to donate to the fund, indicate the amount on the registration form and add it to your total before writing your check or submitting your credit card.

Your donation will go a long way in making the summer special for a child in Darien.

Thank you!

Christopher T. Basta, DSS Director
