For this Las Vegas addition to the renowned Nobu restaurant family, designers the Rockwell Group adopt-ed a traditional Japanese wabi sabi design philosophy. Thus the typical Las Vegas excess was tempered by flavour of simplicity and natural, raw beauty. As part of this approach, huge paper lantern pendants, bespoke creations from Molo (pictured) float across the dining space.

As part of the 2013 London Design Festival, Bocci lighting Creative Director Omer Arbel designed a site specific piece for the Victoria & Albert Museum. Dubbed 28.280, the piece comprised a cascade of heavy copper ‘vines’ that hold in place 280 distorted glass spheres. Based on Bocci’s 28 pen-dants, these globes were created with a variety of colours and opacities. Hanging in the victorian buildings 30-metre atrium space, this temporary isntallation provided a photogenic focal point for the festival’s notional hub venue.

The first mainland-Europe project for Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, Éclectic’s interior is a celebration of the 1970 structure of the Beaugrenelle Centre, stripped back to its brutalist concrete bones and then imbued with warmth through the use of glowing copper and brass metalic surfaces. Interlocking hexagonal and circular geometries are used throughout, not least in the use of Tom Dixon’s Cell pendants, clustered together in an impressive chandelier centrepiece.

Since we last spoke...Since our glass special, Koldova has cre-ated further pieces for Brokis, namely the Capsula (launched last year) and the I Mona lamp, which will be present-ed as a full family at Maison & Object in Paris this September. There is also anew, mouth-blown glass pendant lamp.Koldova continues to work with other brands, creating pieces like the popular Bella lamp, a classy campanological-ly-inspired copper lamp for Belgian brand Peruse.
Since we last spoke...After nearly 25 years in the interior de-sign business, II BY IV DESIGN’s founders Dan Menchions and Keith Rushbrook are getting ready to launch a series of furniture, lighting, textiles, wallcover-ings and tile products. Headlining the launch is the GIA, a series of pendant fixtures and wall sconces dedicated to classic elegance. This spectacular crystal pendant is displayed in the ele-vator lobby at Trump Hotel and Tower, Toronto.
Since we last spoke...Roosegaarde and his team of experts are developing a safe, energy friend-ly installation to capture smog and create clean air. The SMOG project uses patented ion technology to create large holes of clean air. The plan is to make the largest air-puri-fier in the world to create the cleanest, smog-free park in Beijing and - typically taking it that one step further into the fantastic - compress the collected dust into solid souvenier diamonds.

Since we last spoke...Haberdashery continues to grow, with an incorporated company in Hong Kong on track to open their studio this Autumn, with New York following in the Spring. With large overseas public projects in Singapore, New York, Rio and Doha, they are tackling ever more ambitious briefs with an increased element of interaction.Sculptures include interactive clouds, a radical reinterpretation of the disco ball and a stream of experimental ideas coming out of their Hablab programme.
Since we last spoke...All six Heal’s stores now have newly revamped lighting departments with a concentration on Heal’s branded lighting, which includes the best-selling Twiitter and Cool lamp ranges. “The industrial/vintage look has been huge in the last twelve months, as well as lighting with an element of personalisa-tion,” say Longoni. “Looking forward, a key trend will be lighting that focuses on simplicity and modernity, which is crafted using luxury materials.”
Since we last spoke...Recent Studio Arola launches have included the Droid light for Viabizzuno, and Bamboo for Vibia. Despite their obvious differences both lights share a slim form, made possible by LED technology. Further projects have included the Clio R5, which reused car lights, and the ephemeral Roig installation for the street light fair in Barcelona. A book on Arola’s inspirational ‘object collection’ is published in September.

Leimu is a lighting piece by Norwe-gian-born designer Magnus Pettersen. It was inspired by the striking combi-nation of glass and concrete in modern architecture. The sturdy concrete base and the fragile glass lampshade add a fascinating contrast to a space. The colour variations in the mouth blown glass lampshade give each product a unique look. www.iittala.com
The TRACE track system can accomo-date a sequence of spots and pendant lamps. Various track lengths can be individually combined with different luminaires and spots. The tracks are ei-ther mounted directly onto the ceiling or suspended from it. The ballasts are concealed inside the tracks, which can be joined to create the required length. Various pendant lamps from Tobias Grau can be used with the system. www.tobias-grau.com

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York once again canvased the opinions of a panel of editors from the design press in order to honour contemporary product design work in a range of categories. This year’s selection from the show floor at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center was Czech glass lighting special-ist Lasvit.Lasvit’s debut ICFF collection included collaboration with design stars, Arik Levy and Lucie Koldová, and icon of Bohemian glass, René Roubícek. www.lasvit.com
The annual International Association of Lighting Design-ers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards, gave a Merit award to Glenn Chinn and Kenzan Tsutakawa-Chinn of Studio 1Thousand, the LED lighting consultants on STARLIGHT, a site-specific light sculpture at the Museum of the City of New York. As visitors move between floors, the optical effects inherent in the geometry of a uniform spatial grid generate an array of dynamic patterns. Each light diode, or pixel, is constructed from double-sid-ed circuit boards, on which white LED chips are mounted. “Mind blowing!” one judge exclaimed.
The top prize at the 2013 Society of British and International De-signers International Design Awards went to the Rockwell Group who had teamed up with Starwood Hotels Resorts Worldwide to design the W Singapore – Sentosa Cove, a cosmopolitan resort on Sentosa Island. Only 15 minutes from Singapore’s business and shopping districts, this lush tropical island provides the perfect setting for a hotel, spa and venue where business meets pleasure.Bringing the outside in, motifs and materials are drawn from Sin-gapore and Sentosa Island. Orchids, rosewood and traditional floral textiles provide the inspiration and patterns to convey the warmth of the island, while glistening chandeliers and decorative lighting provide touches of style and glamour.

SUMMER REPORT / TRENDS 2014
TRENDING NOWTrendspotting design studio stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano were invited by Messe Frankfurt to identify thematic strands running through the latest decorative & designer lighting releases. They created four scenes to demonstrate what they saw...
CONSTRUCTED SPACESystematic, accentuated, sophisticated. This formal style leaves nothing to chance. Graphic patterns, strong black-and-white contrasts and 3D effects are employed with careful attention to detail. Monochrome and high-gloss finishes underscore the clarity of this strictly geometric style. Reduction to perfection. The silhouettes of minimalist designs seem almost intangible. Modern ideas of interior design integrate lighting as elements in the architecture. For example, elaborate cable runs draw fine lines in the room. Metallic blue and ochre dominate against a background of neutral tones. In the precise-ly conceived interplay of light and shadow, high-gloss and matt materials such as metal, paint, glass, leather and leather braids deliver their full impact.

SELECTED SITESuperb craftsmanship, calm and harmony determine the essence of this very superior style. Asian influences are evident in the intense engagement with materials and finish. Traditional tech-niques are combined with modern design and innovative high-tech with classic styles. The result: products with an unmistake-able character. The skilful interplay of refined patterns and surface structures, traditional folding techniques and gentle transparency creates highly sensitive lighting moods. The balanced colour palette includes muted tones from natural white to wasabi green, ma-hogany and night black. Dark metals such as bronze, old gold and matt gold radiate their warm brilliance in a reduced design style. Above all there is the absolute desire for perfection and quality.

SINGULAR SPOTOptimistic, surreal and unusual. In a design world full of surprises and character an eclectic mix finds its creative resolution. Colour, materials and traditional techniques from different cultures receive an unexpected treatment in avant-garde designs. The desire for experimentation goes hand in hand with sustainable concepts.Glass, metal, wool, bamboo and braids combine casually with red, rose, reseda, sand, azure, cool grey and black. Artistic lighting elements convey humour and self-irony. At the same time the sense of social and environmental responsibility leads to sur-prising solutions with creative designs. Handicrafts from foreign cultures are increasingly used as unmistakeable design features.

UNAFFECTED SCENESensual, poetic and restrained. In this light, extremely sophisti-cated ambience the interior is understated and unobtrusive. The charm of naturalness reveals itself both in the sensitive working of the materials and in gentle interpretations of wooden struc-tures and stone textures.Wood, stone, concrete, marble and textiles in combination with pastel nuances of water, reeds and lime green characterise this style inspired by nature. Materials such as cork and wickerwork find their way into the design and are transformed into contem-porary creations. Furniture and lighting are based on archetypal, organic shapes. Artistic works touch the senses with authentic and poetic qualities.

Day one of the Designers With Light Forum, held within this year’s May Design Series at ExCeL in London, was focussed on the the cross over between high quality product design, lighting design and interior design.First up was product designer Terence Woodgate, who discussed his work designing luminaries for major architectural lighting brands and compared this with his newly launched lighting brand, Terence Woodgate Lighting. Profiled in issue #07 of darc, Woodgate’s new range of decora-tive lighting utilises the latest in LED light source technology, specifically the new Megman GU10 reflector lamps. Megaman’s new Ingenium Bluetooth technology allows a heightened level of controllability, while effective thermal cooling of the LED source permits the use of materials that would previously have been prohibited.Joost Heremans, Associate Partner, Foster + Partners and Director of Muunlight revealed the process behind the creation of his Lightcatcher pendant: a fusion between interior design and fashion design. As Hermemans explained that the piece was heavily inspiration by the architecture of the basilica in Venezay,
Burgundy, France - a building whose architecture makes intriguing use of natural daylight.John Bullock’s talk unveiled his Rules of Three - the underlying matrix of factors that guide and inform every residential lighting project. These comprised Influences (architecture, interior and human id-iosyncrasy), Objectives (function, connection, play) and Lighting Hierarchy (the workers, the support and the focus). A philosophi-cal meditation on good lighting design (via references to Downton Abbey), Bullock’s talk picked out some key points to aid initial discussion between client and lighting designer. The day closed with a panel discussion between a trio of design disciplines: manufacturer, lighting designer and interior designer. Emma Cogswell of the IALD (the International Association of Lighting Designers); Gwenda Jones of the SBID (the Society of British and International Designers) and Ian Stanton of lighting manufacturer iGuzzini all have an interest in helping to create well lit interior spaces. Their different skills were discussed alongside the importance of getting the right professional for the job. www.designerswithlight.com
Held within the Lighting section of May Design Series, the Desingers With Light Forum included a series of talks focusing on the use of light to create well designed spaces.

Empatia ArtemideExperts in combining traditional techniques with the latest lighting technologies, Artemide presented the Empatia collec-tion by Carlotta de Bevilacqua & Paola di Arianello, which incorporates hand-blown Murano glass and LED lighting. Artemide worked closely with Venetian master glass blowers to create a craft object, each one entirely unique, whilst not compromising on light efficiency. The resulting Empatia combines a high performance LED light with in a smooth glass dome, which plays with the subtle effects created by the densities and transparencies of the glass. Light is reflected without glare thanks to a trans-parent pipe which drives the light towards the glass diffuser.www.artemide.com
