Darbuka - Doumbek Derbaki Derbouka Darabuka Dumbek Dumbaleki The Darbuka- Just as there are many names for this incredible hand drum there are also many styles of playing. These styles change as you travel through each country throughout the Middle East and within each region of that country. The darbuka is also very popular in many countries outside of the Middle East such as in the Balkans and even the Western world. Techniques from other hand drums such as the Daf, Riq, Tombak and Tabla have also found their way onto the darbuka. It is sometimes referred to as the belly dance drum because of its use in supporting a belly dancer; however, the darbuka is an instrument that can be used in many different ensembles or orchestras. When learning this drum the student is required to learn the basic tones such as ‘Dum’ (low note) ‘Tuk’ (high note) ‘Ka’ (high note) and a slap tone. Once these basic tones have been mastered the student can then learn the fundamental parts of the rhythms. It is highly beneficial to play the fundamental rhythm with one hand and the filler notes with the other. A good introduction to Arabic rhythms would be to learn two beat cycle rhythms such as Ayub, Karatchi, Malfuf and Kaligi. Four beat cycles such as Maqsum, Saiidi, Baladi and then move on from there. As you learn more rhythms you will also learn new techniques to ornament them with. Once you are at this stage you will start to see the difference between darbuka players from Turkey, Lebanon or Egypt. They all have a unique way of playing. Make sure you take your time when learning rhythms and techniques and please remember the golden rule: Enjoy yourself at all times! All the best,
