It has never been easier to keep up to date and be a part of your Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. You can find us on the Internet at the City of Danville’s official government website. Parks, Recreation and Tourism also has three Facebook pages where you can find us. Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Danville Tourism and The Crossing at the Dan. Become a fan of our pages and be kept up to date on all that is going on. As if that is not enough, you can subscribe to our City Currents eNewsletter, which comes out twice a month and highlights current programs and events. Still need more? Call our Main Office at 799-5200 anytime and we will send you the latest copy of our printed brochure City Currents. Okay, so you don’t have the Internet, you’re not on Facebook and you do not want to read a paper brochure, no problem. We also have two TV shows on River City TV 10. Holiday ProgramsTwinkle Trees - #2351Are you searching for the perfect class to get your preschooler in the holiday spirit? Join the City Auditorium staff, on Thurs-day, December 9, 9:00am, at the Danville City Auditorium, as we help your child make very special ornaments to hang on your family’s tree or give as a gift. Parent participation is requested. All participants must pre-register. This class is for chil-dren 2-5 years of age. The cost is $3 for city residents, $4.50 for NCR residents.

Tell Me a Story, Santa Claus - #2350Thursday, December 9, 6:30 – 8:00pm, Pepsi Building, Craghead Street, Downtown Danville. Registration begins November 15. Snowflakes and Holiday Cakes #2389Join in this holiday event! glenwood Com-munity Center is hosting a party for your little ones that will include games, a snow-flake craft and a yummy treat. This party is designed for 3 – 5 yrs old to ensure optimal fun! The party will be held on Saturday, December 11 from 10:00 – 11:30am. Don’t miss out on this delicious event! A Crafty Christmas - #2352Join the City Auditorium staff, on Thursday, December 16, 9:00am, at the Danville City Auditorium, in making special personalized gifts for the holiday season. Share them with friends and family or use them to add that special touch for your holiday decora-tions. Enjoy crafts, carols and cookies as you get into the holiday spirit. Please bring a photo (3x5 or 4x6) of your child that is suitable for framing. Also, please bring an art smock or an old shirt. This class is for children ages 3-5 years of age. Parent participation is requested. All participants must pre-register. The cost is $3 for city residents, $4.50 for NCR. Santa Calling - #2353Tuesday, December 21, for ages 3-8 years old, 5:30-8:00pm. The registration deadline is Friday, December 17 by 12 noon. Regis-tration begins November 29. Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt #2391Is there someone special that you want to spend your Valentines with? You and your child can spend the morning having break-fast together, going on a lovely scavenger hunt, and making Valentines for the special people in your life. This event will be on February 12 from 9:00 - 11:00am. All 3 – 5 year olds are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Ages 2 – 5Tiny Tot Bike Rodeo #2390Does your child miss riding their bike or tricycle during the winter? At glenwood Community Center, they can ride during a cold winter’s day! On four different Thursday mornings from 11:00am – 12:00pm, we will have a riding course for your child to ride along. This program is for participant’s ages 2 - 5 that can ride a tricycle or bike. Parents/guardians must be present during the pro-gram. The cost is $10 city residents/$12.50 NCR per child, which includes all 4 sessions.

Creation Imagination - #2354Join us for a morning of stories with your own child’s special spin. We will begin with one of the “classic” stories, then through art, crafts and songs, give your little one the opportunity to finish the story in his/her own way. This class will be held Tues-day mornings, 11:00 – 11:45am, at the Pepsi Building, beginning January 4. The fee for the 4-week class is $10 for city residents, $15 for NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Passport to the World #2355Come and explore the world. We’ll begin by making a “Passport” to be stamped with each country we explore. Your young-ster will learn about the people who live there – including some phrases from their languages. Explore South America, Europe, Asia and Africa through songs, crafts, games and food. This class will be held Tuesday mornings, 11:00 – 11:45am, at the Pepsi Building, beginning February 1. The fee for the 4-week class is $10 for city residents, $15 for NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Adventures Begin with A - #2356going from A to Z and using all the let-ters in between, have fun with the alphabet. Each week, your child will focus on a couple of letters through games, songs and crafts. By the time we reach the letter Z, your child will have created their own alpha-bet book. This class will be held Thursday mornings, 11:00 – 11:45am, at the Pepsi Building, beginning January 6. The class fee for the 8-week class is $20 for city residents, $30 for NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Preschool ProgramsWee Sports & Games - #2357This exciting class includes fun, sports activities and group games designed to help your child develop their cognitive and motor skills through kicking, running, throwing and learning social interaction skills. Each week, your child will play a dif-ferent sport or game. This class will meet at the Coates Recreation Center on Tuesday afternoons, 1:00-1:45pm, beginning Janu-ary 11. The fee for the 6-week class is $15 for city residents, $22.50 for NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Coffee and Crayons - #2358Join our staff for a morning packed with creative fun for your kids and an opportunity for you to network with other parents. Dur-ing the hour long program, enjoy a variety of free play activities, art and music… plus enjoy a beverage on us! Parent participation is required. This program will be held on Tuesday mornings, from 9:00 – 10:00am, at the Danville City Auditorium. The cost is $2 per visit for city residents, $3 per visit NCR. Day Care Open Gym - #2363Are you looking for a safe environment for your youngster to play and interact with other children? There are various times and dates available at each of our centers for your children to play with the scoot-ers, balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, etc. Also, we can have small crafts for any reason and season available for a small fee per child. All participants must pre-register.

Koates Kids - #2364 let Brenda Petty introduce your preschool child to colors, letters, numbers and shapes. Social interaction is developed in preparation for school. Brenda has taught this class for many years and has helped many youngsters prepare for school. This program will be held at the Coates Recreation Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9:30am – 12:30pm, begin-ning January 4. The class fee is $14 per week for city residents and $21 per week, NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Curiosity Corner Play Days - #2365Allow your preschooler to spend Thursday mornings making crafts, playing games and having fun. This class begins January 6, from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Cost per day is $7 for city residents and is $10.50 per day, NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Tumblin’ Tots - #2366Introduce your child to tumbling, stretching, flexibility and other basic movement skills. The class is designed for two and three year old children, but siblings up to five years old are welcome. We invite parents to join their children on the mats. The classes are held at the Coates Recreation Center on Saturdays, beginning January 15, from 9:30 – 10:15am. The fee for the 6-week class is $15 for city residents, $22.50 for NCR. Registration begins December 13. All participants must pre-register.

Sporties for Shorties, Itty Bitty Basketball Style - #2367Does your child love to imitate their favorite basketball star by dribbling, shoot-ing and going to the hoop? During this 6-week class specifically designed for little ones, give them the opportunity to learn basic basketball skills. Children must be age three to participate. Parent participation is requested. The classes will be held at the Coates Recreation Center on Saturdays, beginning January 15, from 10:30am. – 11:15am. The class fee for the 6-week class is $15 for city residents and is $22.50 for NCR. Registration begins December 13. All participants must pre-register.

Two, Four, Six, Eight … Preschool Cheerleading is Great!!! - #2368In this fun and movement-filled 6-week class, preschoolers will learn basic cheers and movements. All children must be age three to participate. We do ask that the parents please be ready to participate. The classes are held at the Coates Recreation Center on Saturdays, beginning January 15, from 11:30am – 12:15pm. The fee for the 6-week class is $15 for City Residents, $22.50 for NCR. Registration begins December 13. All participants must pre-register.

Mom’s Afternoon Out - #2369Join our staff for an afternoon of fun, learning experiences through singing, dancing, arts, crafts and free playtime. Play and learning help increase social develop-ment, self-esteem and independence. The program will be held Thursday afternoons, at the Coates Recreation Center, from 12:30 - 2:30pm. The class fee is $6 per day for city residents and $9 NCR. All participants must pre-register.

Holiday ProgramsSecret Shopper Kids, do you want to buy Mom and Dad a gift for the upcoming Holiday, but have no way to get it? You are in luck to make this a special holiday! glenwood is providing a ride to the mall for only $5 per child on December 7 and 15 from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Children must be 6 – 12 years old and have a parent sign a permission slip for the trip. Enjoy socializing, card games, music and other fun activities. Parents are asked to bring a covered dish. This event will be held on Friday, December 17, 5:00-6:30 pm. Free for city residents, $2.00 NCR. Please pre-register by calling 773-8242.

Holiday - Winter Break Camp Parents, do you need something for your children to do over the Winter Break? Bring them to one of the following community recreation centers for a fun and exciting break. Children will be supervised and entertained all break. This is a good chance for them to enjoy their break from school by playing games, making crafts, going on fieldtrips and having a good time. The cost per day for the camp is $10.00 City/ $15.00 NCR; early drop-off and late pick-up are available for an extra fee. Camp will be held December 20 – 23 and December 27 – De-cember 31 from 8:30am - 4:30 pm. For more information, please call the following camp locations to enroll your child:

Youth Dances #2392Our very popular Youth Dances are continu-ing throughout 2011! Meet all your friends and dance the night away at glenwood Community Center. Dances are for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade only. The dances will be held from 7:00–9:00pm on the following dates:

Saturday Nite Live #2393Join us at glenwood Community Center on Saturday, January 22, for a crazy night of fun! If you’re tired of being at home on a Saturday night with no plans, we have the event for you. From 6:00 - 9:00pm play games, scale the climbing wall, karaoke to your favorite tunes and just hang out with your friends. Parents, the entire evening will be properly super-vised and children will not be allowed to leave the premises. This event is for children 5-12 years old and will only cost $8 city residents/$10.50 NCR per child. Drinks will be provided. Please have your child regis-tered by January 19 to participate. Community Book, Game, and DVD Swap #2430February 5, 10am - 12noon, Coates Recre-ation Center. Open to all ages, children-adults. For more information and to register please call Coates at 799-6564. Tubing Trip #2429 Wishing it were snowing outside so you could go out and sleigh ride down the neighbor’s hill? No need to worry ‘cause Danville Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is taking a trip to Wintergreen Ski Resort to conquer their 900-foot, 10-lane mega snow tubing hill!! Transportation will be provided to and from Wintergreen. Participants will need to bring an extra change of clothes. The trip will be held on February 19 from 8:30am- 5:00pm. Cost for the trip will be $40 City and $52.50 NCR. Children ages 8-14 are welcome. Please call 799-6564, for more information and to register.

Theme Birthday Parties #345Offered for children ages 3-12. The cost is $110 and includes games, balloons, punch and a theme cake for 20 children ($4.50 for each additional child). NCR rate is $125.00. Staff will also provide set-up and clean up, all you have to do is show up and have a good time. Parties are two-hours. Ask us about adding our Climbing Wall activities to your birthday party package for a small additional fee. To reserve a date for your party, contact the following locations:

Saturday Programs

*NEW* Snowballs and Rock Walls #2396Jack Frost may be nipping at your nose; it may be bitter and cold, but glenwood is making it fun to enjoy the winter season! In our new program, we are going to play outside in the snow, then come inside to some delicious cookies and hot chocolate! Once everyone is warmed up, we will play gym games and climb the rock wall! It is an entire afternoon of fun! Don’t miss out on this event, it will be held on Saturday, January 8 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. The cost for the program is $8 CR / $10.50 NCR. Children must be between the ages of 5 and 12 to participate. Bring an extra pair of socks and shoes for the climbing wall. Dress warm!! Deco Box #2464 Boys and girls, ages 8-12, create your own treasure box for your keepsake. All sorts of supplies will be provided to choose from according to your own special interest. Decorating will be held on January 8 from 10:00am-12:00noon. Cost is $5 City and $7.50 NCR. Class space is limited, so be sure to register soon! Kiddy Healthy Snacks #2486Stonewall Youth Center will introduce you to simple and inexpensive healthy snacks that you can easily make at home for yourself. This workshop will be held on January 8, from 10:00am -11:00am at Stonewall Youth Center. Cost $2 City Residents and $4 NCR. To register, call 773-8242.

Pillow and Blanket #2031Burr!! Cold Weather is here again, no need to worry. Come to Coates Recreation Center on January 15, from 10:00 am-12 noon, to learn how to make your very own Fleece Pillow and Blanket. All materials and instructions will be provided for you to create a warm and comfortable blanket and pillow to snuggle up with by the fire on those cold winter days. Designer Handbag #2457 Girls, ages 8-12, need a new handbag to keep your personal items in? Come to Coates Recreation Center Saturday, January 22, from 10:00am – 12:00pm, for our designer felt handbag class. You will be able to select the color of bag you desire and design it with materials provided. Cost is $15 City and $17.50 NCR. Class space is very limited, so register soon! Yummy Goodies #2461Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, so it’s time to begin the creating of those much-awaited tasty goodies. Children, ages 5-12, are invited to join Chef Petty’s cooking classes to learn how to make those very yummy cookies, candies and cakes. Classes will be held Saturday, January 29, from 9:30am – 12:00noon. Please register ASAP for space is limited to 12! Cost for the program is $10 City, $12.50 NCR. After School, School Breaks, Holidays, and Camps

After School AdventuresDanville Parks, Recreation and Tourism will be conducting a daily after school program at the following locations throughout the school year. This program meets everyday school is in session from the moment the bell rings until 5:30pm. Flyers will be distributed to students at their respective schools. The program will include homework assistance, arts and crafts, games, fieldtrips, community projects and a wide variety of enrichment activities. The cost per child for the program will be $7.00 per day, $6.00 for second child. For off-site/fieldtrip days, the cost will vary depending on event. Flyers will be sent home in the school folders to announce the planned activities and include registration information. FitnessG-Force Fitness Center Training 101 #2337The new fitness equipment at Squire Recreation Center is yours to use, but be sure you know how to use it properly. Take part in the Training 101 program and learn the basics of the weight machines, how to use them, and other useful exercises you can learn. Park Shelters and Picnic Site Reservations The early bird gets the worm and calling early will ensure that favorite picnic site is booked for your family reunion, church or company picnic. Ask our staff about the new shelter and restrooms at Anglers Park. Picnic reservations for 2011 will begin at 9:00am on Monday, January 3. When registering for services online there will be a small convenience fee. Pre-registration is required for all classes, • workshops and activities even when no fee is charged. Accurate enrollment figures allow for appropriate set-up and sufficient supplies.Registration by city residents is accepted • on a “first come, first serve” basis. Fees shown include a City Resident Fee (CR) and a Non City Resident Fee (NCR). Non City Residents are eligible to participate in most Parks, Recreation & Tourism programs and services usually at a fee higher than that of City Residents. In some cases, City Residents are given an opportunity to register for programs prior to being offered to Non City Residents. City of Danville services are supported by City Resident tax dollars, this is why Non City Residents are asked to pay an additional fee for most programs and services to include class fees, rental fees, trip fees, open recreation fees, team fees, etc. Registration for some services requires a • service fee, which is not refundable. Some programs/trips may require a • deposit of up to 50% of the program/trip fee(s) at the time of registration. This fee may not always be refundable.Reservation of most facilities also requires • a deposit at the time of reservation in order to hold a facility. A facility is not specifically reserved for you until a deposit is paid, all criteria are met and a reserva-tion application has been approved.

Payment Payment for a program is required prior to the first class meeting or by the earlier deadline indicated, and may be mailed, paid in person, completed by phone or online with the use of a MasterCard or Visa.

Payment made within ten working days of • the program or rental will only be accepted in cash, money order or by credit card. Attendance in a class is not allowed until payment is received. There is no reduction in the program fee due to high registration.The city charges a $35.00 Service Fee for • each bad check.

CancellationDanville Parks, Recreation & Tourism may find it necessary to cancel programs when insufficient registration is received. To make sure a program of interest to you is success-ful, please make sure you, your family and friends sign up early before the program is cancelled due to lack of registration.

In the event a program must be postponed due to inclement weather or the instructor’s absence, a makeup session will be arranged. Makeup sessions for individuals who miss a program are not possible.

RefundsRefunds on recreation programs are not • available, if the program has met at least one time.If a participant does not take a program • after paying the registration fee, appropri-ate staff must be notified at least five (5) days prior to the start of the program. (Some trip/program costs may not be refunded in full – see staff for explanation of options.)Processing of refunds takes approximately • three (3) weeks. For payment of some fees, a service charge • will be added and this is not refundable.

Canine Good Manners 101 #2415In this class, your dog will learn how to listen to you, learn the basic commands, and participate in other fun exercises. The instructor will teach you how to teach your dog to become attentive, well mannered and balanced. A well-behaved dog is a true joy to have in your home. Good Manners is a 6-week program from January 3 – February 7 held on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30pm and the cost is $65. Canine Good CitizenshipIn this class, your dog will learn how to become a good citizen. The instructor will teach you how to teach your dog to become calm, confident, and well man-nered in a community setting. This class will continue to keep your dog balanced and attentive to directions. Dogs that have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with, respond well to household routines, have good manners in the pres-ence of people and other dogs and fully enjoy the company of their owner. The classes will be held from 6:30 - 7:30pm. The cost is $70 and is a 7 -week program.

Rally Dog Obedience #2419Rally is a fun obedience activity that com-bines elements of obedience and agility. Rally emphasizes fun and excitement for the dog/handler team while providing an inter-active approach to obedience. The exercis-es in this class will help build your skills as a handler and increase your dog's repertoire of behaviors. Rally is a 6-week program held on Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:30pm, January 12 – February 23 (No class on February 2). The cost is $65. Furry Friends Day # 2399 Does your 4-legged friend mean the world to you? Do you like to spend time with your dog and take them places? glenwood is hosting a Furry Friends event at the center on Saturday, February 26 from 2:00 – 4:00pm. At this event, you will be able to make homemade dog treats and bring home the recipes, take your canine through the challenge course, get a family portrait done and get valuable information! This furry friendly event will only cost the family $5 city residents/$7.50 NCR. Don’t miss this great event that includes EVERYONE in your family! Good Dog Obedience got a new puppy and you are already tired of the little runt biting and chewing up everything in the house? Well bring the little rascal to Coates Recreation Center to get this little pup trained in the department of “good behavior.” Mary Owen, a certified dog trainer, will teach you how to keep your new best friend in line and out of trouble.
