Taking pride in Dankook's history, the University takesanother leap forward into the future

Founding of the UniversityAs korea fell under the colonial rule of Japan, beomjeong Chang Hyong discontinued his studies in 1911 and fled to Manchuria to dedicate himself to the independence movement along with other independence activists such as kim koo. Upon returning to korea in the year following the state’s liberation, Chang realized that the only way to building a peaceful and independent nation would be to foster talent and decided to found a university. Meanwhile, after Park kihong, a member of the patriotic camaraderie Chang was a part of at the korean exile government in Shanghai, passed away, his wife Hyedang Cho Huijae was also trying to carry out her husband’s shared vision to found an institution for higher education. The two made strong commitments and founded Dankook University on November 3rd, 1947 making it the first four-year private university to open its doors following korea’s independence.

Opening the first chapter of private schools in Korea 1947 Opens as the first full-time private

university in the post-independence era (Departments of law, Political Science, History, Mathematics and Physics)

1949 buildings move to Sindang-dong, Seoul 1951 Temporary move to busan during the

korean War / Graduation ceremony for the first class of 104 students is held at Deoksan Elementary School in Daegu

1957 Campus construction starts in Hannam-dong and the university returns to Seoul
