A long overdue analysis of the nume-rous and unusually fine Early Iron Age settlement sites in Western Denmark. Leo Webley, a Cambridge graduate, sees new correlations in the large body of evidence and provides refreshing sug-gestions as to how these should be un-derstood.

A lively account of various aspects of daily life in Western Denmark during the Viking Age – including life on the farmsteads, contact with the world around and burial practices. Lithic technology in metal using societiesBerit Valentin Eriksen (ed.)

This book presents 17 contributions to an international symposium held in Lisbon in 2006. The aim of the symposium was to discuss events associated with the first great technological upheaval – when flint and other types of stone were replaced by metal. And why, despite this, there were still societies around the world where flint craftsmanship thrived long after metal technology had become established.

Jan Skamby Madsen & Lutz Klassen

The discovery of large quantities of ship components revealed that wooden ships were repaired along the banks of the river Fribrødre Å on Falster at the end of the 11th century. The evidence suggests that this activity related to three invasion expeditions launched against Eastern Holstein between 1090 and 1093 by the Slav prince Heinrich from exile in Denmark, with the support of his uncle, the Danish king Olaf Hunger. ge settlement and fortress

Aggersborg is the largest of the Danish circular fortresses of the Viking Age. Built by the king, Harald Bluetooth, in the second half of the tenth century, it was strategically placed on the shore of the Limfjord. Together with other Danish fortifications it was intended to play a major role in the politics of northern Europe.

The fortress overlaid a Viking-Age rural settlement which was destroyed when the fortress was constructed. The well-preserved remains of build-ings and the many artefacts excavated here provide a unique view of the physical and social structure of this settlement and of its material culture.

The book gives an account of the extensive excavations by the National Museum of Denmark of both the fortress and the rural settlement and sets their structures and the objects found within the wider context of the Viking Age. It also sheds new light on Denmark’s history at a time of major cultural and political challenges.

Medieval mendicant monasteries in DenmarkThe building culture of the Franciscans and Dominicans

Morten Larsen

The mendicant orders arose in the 13th century and achieved great significance for the development of medieval mona-sticism. These orders were an integral part of Danish society for three centu-ries, and by the end of the Middle Ages there were mendicant monasteries in most Danish market towns – often in the form of extravagant monastic comple-xes. These complexes, and the history of their buildings, are the subject of this book which, with a point of departure in standing monuments and archaeological investigations, examines the building culture of the mendicant orders.

Sea-Level Change in Mesolithic southern ScandinaviaPeter Moe Astrup

As the ice began to melt about 20,000 years ago, a sustained rise in sea level took place that lasted for millennia. This resulted in the settlements of people who had lived in the former coastal areas gradually becoming inundated by the sea. As a result, our perception of the Maglemose culture is exclusively based on finds from settlements that were located in the interior, far away from the coast at that time. In this book, the author investigates the role played by the coast and coastal resour-ces in the lives of people in Maglemose times, and how they adapted to the changing sea level.

The Maussolleion at Halikarnassos Reports of the Danish Archaeological Expedition to Bodrum

Between 1966 and 1977, Professor Kristian Jeppesen of Aarhus University re-excavated the Mausoleum at Halicarnassos, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, located in present-day Bodrum, Southwest Turkey. The results of these investigations are presented in seven volumes.

1. The Sacrificial Deposit Kristian Jeppesen, Flemming Højlund & Kim Aaris-Sørensen In front of the entrance to King Mausolos’ grave chamber a

votive layer was discovered containing the remains of scores of oxen, calves, sheep/goats, lambs, hens, doves and hen’s eggs. The animals had been butchered according to very specific rites, which have been reconstructed on the basis of studies of cut- and chopping marks on the bones, in conjunction with written accounts of the sacrificial rituals.
