Th i s p ro jec t fo l l owed the scope o f the 2015 ULI H ines Compe t i t i on . The pro jec t ’ s loca t i on i s a long New Or leans ’s C la ibo rne Cor r i do r , on the Nor the rn edge o f the c i t y ’ s Tu lane-Grav ie r ne ighbo rhood . In o rde r to remed ia te the i ssues in the s i t e , wh ich inc lude pove r t y , vu lne rab i l i t y to heavy s to rms , and lack o f adequa te pub l i c t ranspo r ta t i on , some o f these wh ich were on l y made worse by Hur r i cane Ka t r i na , the team des igned a se r i es o f oppo r tun i t i es and so lu t i ons fo r the empowermen t and rev i t a l i za t i on o f the s i t e . We began by iden t i f y i ng a reas o f the p ro jec t wh ich cou ld be ac t i va ted in to hubs o f economic ac t i v i t y and prospe r i t y , as we l l as o f ac t i ve pa r t i c i pa t i on o f res iden ts . We connec ted these po in t s th rough a new wa te r fea tu re wh ich wou ld no t on l y ho ld wa te r du r i ng heavy s to rms , bu t wou ld a l so se rve as an ac t i ve pa thway fo r the res iden ts o f the commun i t y and the g rea te r New Or leans as we l l as fo r tou r i s t s , pa r t i cu la r l y as they nav iga te though the new ly ac t i va ted pa rk on the Nor th end o f the s i t e . We sank the s t ree t and c rea ted new br idges on the eas te rn pa r t o f the s i t e , in to the French Quar te r , and added prog rams to the bo t tom o f the h ighway , wh ich cu r ren t l y d i v i des and d isen f ranch i ses the s i t e . Las t l y , we a imed to add and improve b i ke ne tworks as we l l as pedes t r i an wa lkways in o rde r to p romo te in te rac t i on w i th in the s i t e the g rea te r c i t y .

The h ighway posed a ma jo r p rob lem in the s i t e ; i t ac ted as a bar r i e r be tween the two ha lves o f the s i t e and a lso p romo ted fee l i ngs o f unsa fe t y to the res iden ts o f the commun i t y . We op ted to conve r t two o f i t s lanes in to a l i gh t sha f t , wh ich wou ld a l l ow l i gh t to pass th rough to i t s unde rs ide and ac t i va te th i s cu r ren t l y unused land . Add i t i ona l l y , we dec ided to add prog rams here tha t wou ld bene f i t the res iden ts o f the commun i t y . Ta ipe i i s an ongo ing p ro jec t wh ich was commiss ioned in 2010 and is schedu led to beg in cons t ruc t i on la te r th i s yea r . The pro jec t was fas t-paced and qu ick l y des igned and rea l i zed be tween the mon ths o f May to November 2014, requ i r i ng the p ro jec t team to be on-s i te on a week l y bas i s . The pro jec t ’ s re la t i ve l y sma l l sca le insp i red the team to dev i se space sav ing so lu t i ons and to s imp l i f y de ta i l s in o rde r to c rea te a cohes i ve , e f fec t i ve space . Each o f these de ta i l s - such as the ba th room mi r ro r wh ich inco rpo ra ted bo th l i gh t i ng and s to rage , the ea t i ng coun te r wh ich requ i red a ca re fu l cons ide ra t i on o f ava i l ab le space and cus tomer comfo r t , o r the ba th room door wh ich was cons t ruc ted to have a seamless t rans i t i on w i th the wa l l - was immense l y impor tan t . Because o f the landmark s ta tus o f the s i t e , the team a lso had to focus on prese rv ing and inco rpo ra t i ng the h i s to r i c aspec ts o f the ex i s t i ng bu i l d i ng in to the new s i t e , wh ich in many ways in fo rmed the des ign o f the p ro jec t .

The leng th o f the s i t e i s used to advan tage in d i v i d i ng the sepa ra te bu t re la ted p rog rams o f ga l l e r y , wh ich i s housed in the wes t end , and o f f i ces and ar t schoo l , wh ich take ove r the qu ie te r , eas te rn s ide o f the s i t e . Though sepa ra ted , the p rog rams are non the less re la ted th rough the bu i l d i ng ’s con t i nuous fo rm, wh ich p rov ides a pa thway tha t can take v i s i t o r s th rough the en t i r e t y o f the s i t e i f they so choose . The des ign uses mate r i a l s such as conc re te and wood tha t , a l t hough s imp le and s t ra igh t fo rwa rd , p rov ide p ro tec t i on f rom the e lemen ts a t a s i t e tha t i s o the rw ise embedded in and comp le te l y exposed to na tu re .

Sus ta inab i l i t y and economy were two impor tan t aspec ts in the des ign o f the bu i l d i ng ; the bu i l d i ng i s shea thed w i th a lum inum and po lyca rbona te shee ts , two recyc lab le and economica l ma te r i a l s . The roo f was des igned to accomoda te a c i s te rn in to the bu i l d i ng . Add i t i ona l l y , the ex i s t i ng bu i l d i ng ’s base s t ruc tu re was kep t and remode led to f i t the needs o f the des ign .

The s i te was t rea ted as a co l l ec to r o f t ra f f i c , o rgan i z i ng the bu i l d i ng in to bands o f space tha t fac i l i t a te access to the museum and tha t a l so p rov ide amen i t i es , such as pub l i c res t rooms, wa te r foun ta ins , b i ke pa rk ing , a pub l i c aud i to r i um, and ea t i ng and res t i ng space , to pedes t r i ans on the t ra i l . The f l oo r o f the museum is a cons tan t low-s lope ramp, wh ich e f fo r t l ess l y takes a l l v i s i t o r s , even those w i th d i sab i l i t i es , th rough the museum. The s t ruc tu re i s ma in l y cas t- in-p lace conc re te to fac i l i t a te the cu rv i l i nea r shapes o f the wa l l s , as we l l as to p rov ide a the rma l bu f fe r be tween the Aus t i n hea t and the in te r i o r o f the museum.
