DANIEL SCHLABACI! FAMILY HISTORY

Christian Schlabach, our first ancestor, lived in the old country and had a family of four boys and four girls. It seems they were not satisfied with conditions in the old country and decided to investigate and find a new home.

So two of the boys, John and Christian, both single, decided to come to the United States. After procuring the necessary papers, their church papers and passports, they left their home land and started for this country on March 13, 1819.

When they arrived at New York they went to Somerset County, Pa. It was agreed that upon their favorable report of the new country, that the other members of the family would follow. So, on April 12, 1829, the father, Christian Schlabach, and the rest of the family—two sons and four daughters—started for this country, but because of adverse winds and storms they did not arrive at New York until August 15, 1820, over four months after they embarked. They also migrated to Somerset County, Pa., where they resided until the year 1825 or 1826, when all of the family migrated to Holmes County, Ohio.

Following are the children of Christian Schlabach, our first ancestor, who came from the old country in 1820. His wife probably died in the old country.

John was born Sept. 10, 1782.

Marie was born Oct. 11, 1784.

Jacob was born Sept. 19, 1786. Died May 8, 1863.

Cathrine was born April 19, 1790.

Christian was born Sep. 30, 1793. Died Apr. 16, 1871

Magdalena was born Jan. 8, 1795.

Anna was born August 15, 1799.

Daniel was born June 4, 1802.

DANIEL SCHLABACH FAMILY HISTORY

John Schlabach, oldest son of Christian, was born Sept. 10, 1782, and died and was buried in the Abraham Mast cemetery near the Bishop Sol Sclabach home.

Marie Schlabach, second child of Christian, was born Oct. 11, 1784.

Jacob Schlabach, third child of Christian, was born Sept. 19, 178G, and died May 8, 1868, and was buried in the David Schlabach cemetery now owned by Rudy J. Yoder near Charm, Ohio. He was married to Barbara Yoder in Somerset County, Pa. She was born about Sept. 1793, and died Sept. 11, 1856, at 63 years, 8 m., 10 d., and was buried at the same place on the David Schlabach farm cemetery.

Their children:

Daniel Schlabach was born March 26, 1827 and died May 27, 1888.

Elizabeth Schlabach was born March 26, 1827, and was married to Joseph Sommers.

David Schlabach was born Sept. 27, 1828, and died Sept. 24, 1895 at 66 yrs., 11 m., 27 days. He married Katie L. Miller. She was born Nov. 5, 1832 and died Dec. 7, 1906 at 75 years, 1 m. and 2 d.

Katie Schlabach was married to John Schmucker

Susie Schlabach was married to Joseph Mast.

Mattie Schlabach was married to Daniel Mast.

Jacob Schlabach was married to Maria Miller. They lived between Charm and Walnut Creek, Ohio.

Their children:

Elizabeth was married to Joni M. Hershberger.

Susie was married to Isaac P. Hershberger.

Eli was married to Mattie Miller (2) Fannie Miller.

Daniel was unmarried.

Cathrine Schlabach, fourth child of Christian, was born April 19, 1790.

Christian Schlabach, fifth child of Christian, was born Sept. 30, 1793, and died April 16, 1871. Was buried in the cemetery on the farm now owned by Alfred C. Yoder, north of Berlin, Ohio. He was married to Barbara Gnaegi. She was born July 26, 1791, in the old country, and died May 30, 1868.

Elizabeth Schlabach was born May 16, 1824 and died Jan. 24, 1900. She married Tobias Hostetler Jan. 10, 1859. He was born Aug. 12, 1318 in Somerset county, Pa., and died Oct. 1, 1887. Was a minister. His son, Eli T. Hostetler was born Mar. 3, 1862 and died Feb. 14, 1906.

He m. Mary E. Byler by Bishop David S. Miller. She was born Jan. 6, 1861 at New Castle, Pa. She was married (2) to Daniel T. Miller who died in a boiler explosion. She now resides with her daughter, Joni M. Millers, in Wayne county, O. She has Christian Schlabach’s church papers and pass port, and other papers giving names and date of birth of his brothers and sisters. Also his citizen¬ ship paper which he procured here in the U. S. Following is a copy:

THE STATE OF OHIO) HOLMES COUNTY SS ) BE IT KNOWN, that on the 18th day of May A. D. 1844, before the undersigned, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in and for said County, personally came Christian Schlabach, a free, white person of the age of twenty-one years, who, upon his solemn

. oath by me administered, declared, that it was bonafide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all alleg¬ iance and fidelity to every Foreign Prince, Po¬ tentate, State, or Sovereignty whatsoever; and particularly to the Duke ot Hess.

IN TESTIMONY, that the above declaration was duly made before me, I hereto sign my name, and affix the Seal of said Court, the 18th day of May A. D. 1844.

No. 12034 in the New Hostetler history gives an ac¬ count of this Christian Schlabach and Barbara Gnaegi family.

Magdalena Schlabach, sixth child of Christian, was born Jan. 8, 1795. She married Jacob Kemp Dec. 4, 1825. He was born Oct. 14, 1786. Their children: Maricha b. Apr. 4, 1927. Magdalena b. Apr. 13, 1829. Barbara b. May 5, 1830. Christian b. Oct. 13, 1932. Catherine b. Nov. 21, 1838. Christian was the father of John Kemp and Dahla Kemp Iielmuth, widow of Abner Helmuth.

Anna Schlabach, seventh child of Christian, was born Aug. 15, 1799.

Daniel Schlabach, eighth child of Christian, was born June 4, 1802 and died Jan. 21, 1856. Was buried in the cemetery on the David Schlabach farm now owned by Rudy J. Yoder. He was married to Katie Yoder, sister of Barbara, wife of Jacob Schlabach. She died Mar. 2, 1856.

Their children:

Christian Schlabach, born Feb. 21, 1825. Married Elizabeth Miller. He was a deacon in the Amish church.

Mr. Yoder, the father of Barbara and Katie Yoder, wives of Jacob and Daniel Schlabach who resided in Sommerset Co., Pa., came to Ohio personally and bought farms for his son-in-laws, the David Schlabach farm now owned by Rudy J. .Yoder for Jacob, and the Daniel Sch¬ labach farm now owned by Eli S. Mast for Daniel. These farms are located near Charm, Ohio. They always lived there and died and were buried on the farm then owned by Jacob. Christian Schlabach, our ancestor and father of Jacob and Daniel, is also buried at the same place.

Was buried on the farm cemetery where he lived near Bunker Hill. He was married to Sarah (Sally) Kaufman, the daughter of Abraham Kaufman. She was born Jan. 19, 1825 and died March 5, 1917 at 92 yr., 1 mo., 14 d. Was buried at the same place. Old Order Amish. Abraham (2) Cathrine (31) Mary (61) Susanna (79) Jacob (110) Elizabeth (133).

2 Abraham Schlabach 1 Millersburg, Ohio, Rt. 5, and Barbara Miller, daughter of Jeremiah Miller and Ly¬ dia Troyer were m Dec. 27, 1870. He was born July 28, 1850 and died Sept. 18, 1927. She was born Mar. 12, 1848 and died Dec. 4, 1900. They were buried in the cemetery on the Jacob Miller farm adjoining their farm where they lived. O. O. Amish farmer. Jacob A (3) Jeremiah E.
