DANIEL MULHOLLAND - FROM CO. ANTRIM TO NEW ZEALAND

Offered by John Bassett, Member B 0114

Extracted from Cyclopedia of New Zealand - Volume 3, Canterbury. Published 1903.

Mr Daniel Mulholland, Proprietor of "Churchlea", was bom in County pi|Hpj|^HI^^M^p^| Antrim, Ireland, in 1856, and educated at the village of Crumlan

pfpfH [Crumlin]. At the age of thirteen he went to Scotland, where he worked

?^^^^^^^^BBlillI for five years at the coal mines, in Lanarkshire. In 1875 he left Scotland p^^^^^^^Pi^^^^H for New Zealand. He landed in Port Chalmers, worked for one year ̂ ^^^^Ri^^^^^^M as a farm hand in Otago, and in 1877 joined his brother in the

^^^BE^ ^^^^^H

Two years later he went to Banks' Peninsula, under engagement to ipB^^BB^^^^^^^SB: work for Mr. John Holmes, for whom, after a short interval spent in W?1IM

business in Christchurch, he subsequently worked as head shepherd ̂ Hb^K li^^^H on the Banger station, until 1886. Mr. Mulholland is a member of the j|?

Canterbury and Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Associations, of ^MMBH|^^^^Mp?^^^^B the Darfield branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and of the ^^^^^^BB|B^||i|^^^^B^^^^fi^^^^^^^^B local school committee. He married Miss Frances Horrell, formerly ̂B^^^^^^^^^^^B^^^^^?^BM

of Devonshire, England, and has three sons and one daughter. IWIII^^

AN UNDERAGE BIGAMIST

Roy A Jack, Member B 0560

Marion Annie Jack was bom in Coleraine in June 1895, where her father was a schoolmaster - the

family later moved to Belfast.

On the 13th September 1913, using the name "Annie Marion" and giving her age as "over 21 ", although she was only 18, she was married in Great Victoria Street Presbyterian Church to Pieter Pluigmert, an

engineer. Two years later, on the 7th August 1915, using her correct name and claiming to be "21", she was married in Saint Anne's Parish Church Belfast, to Sub Lieutenant Robert Peter Mann, R.N.

As she was under age at the time of both marriages, did she commit bigamy - or was she never legally

married at all?

Incidentally, Robert Peter Mann was not a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Navy as stated on their Marriage Certificate - he was actually a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve. Did he too have something to hide or did he have another wife in another port?
