Living in the Course of Transcendence

Born August 29, 1986. I was born with a large

round head and big ears. When my Uncle Jerry

saw me for the first time he said, “he has my ears,”

followed by my Uncle Bob who came in and also

said, “aw he has my ears.” Then, shortly after my

Grandpa saw me he said, “the boy has my ears.”

For some reason, everyone was trying to take

credit for my ears that day. Older siblings, Carley

and Kellen, had also welcomed me that day and I

was so happy to be Daniel James Des Lauriers.

I took upon a great deal of firsts this year. My first birth-

day, my first haircut from my grandfather, my first tooth, or

my first word, which was “dad.” The one that really sticks

with me was taking a dip in the pool for the first time. I

went swimming with my brother and sister in a little pool

in the backyard of our home in Spring Valley and I loved

it. My brother and sister would spend most of their time

outside, riding bikes, playing in the sprinklers, or driving

their three wheelers, and I would always love to watch

them. When I would get the chance to play with them I’d

follow them around everywhere. I have always looked up

to my older brother and sister, not because of their height

but because they always took such good care of me.

It was a nice summer day where my brothers, sisters and I were running and jumping in and out of the pool. As the day got later, we grew tired and it was time for dinner. My mother would dry each of us off and wrap us up with towels before we went inside. Whenever I stepped out of the pool I would get really cold, which is why I looked forward to being all wrapped up and warm. My mother noticed I was shivering alongside the pool, so she had wrapped me up extra tight in my big green towel and I became instantly warm. The towel had been wrapped around my whole body unable to move

I Love Jamul. We moved from our place in Spring Val-ley to a nice quiet area in Jamul, East County San Di-ego. Our new home featured a big yard and a peanut shaped swimming pool, but that wasn’t the only thing I was excited about. It was that same year that I was go-ing to have another brother. My little brother Nick was born June 15 and I would finally have someone I could teach or pick on. There are now three Des Lauriers boys and my parents knew we would soon be hard to handle. a self-surpass-

When I was young, I had many characteristics that made me stand out. I would suck my thumb, I always had my blanket in my hand, I had a high voice, and I would always walk around on my toes. When I would do something bad, my Dad would hide my blanket to punish me and I hated it. I hated it until I figured out where he hid it. After I did something bad, whether it was being mean to my little brother or not eating my veggies, my Dad hid my blanket in a cabinet under the oven. I would just wait until my dad sat down to watch television, and then would sneak off to get my blanket. Nobody get’s between my blanket and me.

my arms looking like a human burrito. As I walked away from the pool I had slipped for-ward unable to catch myself, I landed right on my chin. My chin had opened up and my mother rushed me to the hospital. She felt so bad, yet I didn’t mind that much because after Doctor said I would need stitches and I would get to choose the color, the pain went away, and I knew I would have a pretty cool scar.

scared because I didn’t know anybody

and it was a lot different than spending

my days at home or with family. Some

days I would try to pretend that I was

sick to stay home, but it never really

worked. Once I started to go to school

more I learned to like it and became

friends with a lot of other kids. One

of the ways I would make friends was

by doing headstands. My friend and I

would do headstands throughout recess

and everyone would watch. We did a

lot of wild things during recess such as

climbing trees, jumping off swings; we

were the wild kindergarten pack put-

ting on a circus for the rest of the class.

This behavior made me feel appreciated

and was the only way I thought other

kids would want to be my friends.

ck When I started first grade there was a

check-in for the each parent to sign. My

mother had to take my older brother

and sister to school to, so she dropped

me off in front of class. Now I didn’t

think she signed the check-in, so I be-

came worried that I wouldn’t be able to

get into class. I ended up trying to walk

home to get my mother and to avoid

the first day of class and stay home. My

house was about four miles away from

the school and I had walked half that

until another parent noticed me. She had

been my mothers good friend and her

son was also in my class, so she picked

me up and gave me ride back to class.

Although I was grateful she picked me

up and brought me back to school, but

I was still upset I was back in class.

“the three ninja’s”My two brothers and I liked to call ourselves the

three ninjas. I remember us watching our favorite

movies together like The Three Ninjas and all the

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We would act out

the moves, and give each other names after the

characters and would usually wouldn’t stop fighting

until we were really tired or until one of us got hurt.

This went on for a couple years, and would always

love watching these kinds of movies together.

Started playing soccer and basketball. I was always hard to

handle, running around the house full of energy. I put that

energy toward playing soccer and basketball. I played for

the soccer league AYSO, which is where i met a lot of new

friends. Our uniforms were blue and yellow and our ban-

ner read “The Hot Shots.” It was coming down to the end

of the season and The Hot Shots were playing the number

one team in our division. I was friends with everyone on

the field, from both teams and this game was all about

fun, until the end. The game went on, both sides scoring

back and forth. It was toward the end of the game and the

score was tied at three. We gained control of the ball and

moved it forward to the opponent’s goal. The ball rolled in

my direction and I kicked it has hard as I could. The whistle

Throughout the years of my life my family has always had pets. Most of our pets have been dogs, but we’ve had rabbits, a cat, ham-sters, guinea pigs, and some fish. This year on my birthday I got two pets of my own. They were turtles that I named Clark and Lois after a superman televi-sion show. I was able to create a nice little area for them outside, where they could roam around and do turtle things.

the ground and we were

wrestling on the asphalt in

front of the whole school.

The teachers broke it up

and gave us detention,

where I had to sit in the

office until school got out.

THE ESSENCE AND PINNACLE OF THE ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE

My little brother was in this reading class and usu-ally I would sit in with the class before school started until a lady told me I could run the track instead. Al-though this might not seem fun for an eleven year old, there were a few gimmicks like doughnuts, or every ten miles I’d get some kind of prize. I would walk or run laps with a couple of friends each day before school started and enjoyed doing it too.

It was this same year that I played basketball with some friends at a boys and girls club. Basketball became another sport for me to express my athletics and show off my speed.THE DRAMA OF

As a culture, we have come to associate epiphanies, revelations, and the like with

SNOWBOARDING age 13

The year I learned to snow-

board, I gained a lot of

interest for other boarding

sports. My family and I went

up to Tahoe for a winter

vacation and everybody

tried to learn how to snow-

board. We all stayed on the

bunny slopes, but I never

wanted to leave. Riding

down a mountain, carving

through rich powdery snow,

and having the wind whistle

in my ears is the reason I

loved to snowboard because

this experience gave me a

feeling of freedom. I went

through plenty of action

sports such as skateboard-

ing, wakeboarding, snow-

boarding, and riding BMX

bikes. Learned to snow-

board and to wakeboard in

Lake Tahoe. Everyday after

school, my brothers and

some friends would make

jumps for our skateboards

and bikes out of old wood,

that sometimes still had

nails in it. We would ride

until the sunset or at least

until we hurt ourselves.

Once my Dad got a

digital camera to record

family occasions and

events, but my friends,

brothers and I found other

uses from it. We star ted

making movies that we

found to be hilarious.

We made movies such as

Pool Watch instead of Bay

Watch, where we pretend-

ed to be weird drown-

ing victims and my older

brother Kellen would save

us. We had a closet full

of odd clothes that maybe

somebody had worn once,

which is where we would

get our ideas for our

movies. We had fi lmed a

variety of dif ferent things

such as backyard wres-

t l ing, stunts that involved

us jumping of f the roof,

a documentary on our

coach, and several dif-

ferent cop movies. My

friends and I even did

a movie about Sigmund

Freud for our History

Fair. I have always been

interested in fi lm and sti l l

end up making movies

today with some friends.

At that special level all sorts of odd things happened.... It was almost as if we were playing in slow motion. Dur-ing those spells I could al-most sense how the next play would develop and where the next shot would be taken. Even before the other team brought the ball in bounds, I could feel it so keenly that I’d want to shout to my teammates, “It’s coming there!”-Except that I knew everything would change if I did. My premo-nitions would be consistent-ly correct, and I always felt then that I not only knew all the Celtics by heart but also all the opposing players, and that they all knew me.As compelling as these ex-

going beyond yourself is the underlying allure of sportExperienced high school,

where I tried out for

football, soccer, and ten-

nis for the Steele Canyon

Cougars. It was the first

year of high school and

I always wanted to play

football because I always

enjoyed the sport. I was

born during a football

game, I’d watch foot-

ball every Sunday, and

played football almost

everyday after school.

The position I played

was wide receiver and

kicker, and I would go

in as running back every

once in a while. One

game I caught a touch-

down pass, had to kick

the extra point, then the

kick, it was the first time

that everyone’s eye’s

were on me for a good

few minutes and just the

thrill of the game kept

me focused and put me

in the zone. Playing a

football game against

your schools rival be-

comes such an exhilarat-

ing experience. Football

had a big impact on my

life, but it wasn’t the

only sport I had such a

passion for. I ended up

also playing soccer and

tennis in high school

as well. Whenever I’d

play a sport, there were

certain moments, wehere

I would enter this place

in my mind, a kind of

tranquility that made me

feel almost invincible

and unstoppable. When

i entered this frame of

mind everything would

slow down and I’d be

able to perfect every hit,

every kick, and every

seerve. This thrill I ex-

perienced while playing

sports, was an experi-

ence I valued and want-

ed to achieve every time

I competed. The competi-

tiveness within sports has

played a huge role in

life, on and off the field.

Thriving to learn new things, I knew high school would be a great chance to achieve different characteristics. I had always been inter-ested music and had always wanted to play an instrument. One Christmas I was given a keyboard, my older brother was given a guitar and my young-er brother was given a beginners drum set. I had tried to teach myself how to play the piano, but I only learned songs like Jingle Bells, or Chop-sticks. When I was going to high school I notice they had a class that taught be-

ginning guitar. I took the class hoping to finally learn an instru-ment I enjoyed listen-ing to. The teacher of the beginners guitar class didn’t know how to play guitar, which is really weird, so I learned to play the guitar from mainly my friends around me who already knew how to play and then I self-taught myself. Later that year I got my own acoustic guitar and was able to play everyday.

When I wasn’t go-ing to school or playing sports, I was able to get a job that allowed me to make and save some money on the side. First job was working at Raphael’s Inc. A fabrics and framing warehouse, where I would take care of shipping products, sanding frames, and running a machine that would lay fabric on differ-ent types of wood that later becomes an elegant looking frame. I worked

with good friends that I had known for a long time and my boss was also my soccer coach when I was young. This work place became an excellent environment to start a nice paying job because everyone was friendly and I didn’t mind doing any kind of heavy work. Having a job for the first time became quite the experience for me.

age 18 It was before I turned

seventeen, that I got my

first car. It was a white

Ford Ranger, which

gave me the freedom

to go anywhere, but

for right now it was

mainly to get me to

school, to work, and

to the beach. I love

this truck, whom I like

to call Simon. Simon

like my friend, my pal,

through a lot with me.

age 19Before I graduated high

school, I took a few

computer classes that

taught me 3D anima-

tion and Web Design.

I got hooked as soon

as I started messing

around with the differ-

ent programs. In my

animation class I cre-

ated a neighborhood

watch ad with a ninja.

I also made a snow-

boarder, and an evil

crazy clown, that still

mation became a way

to express my creativ-

ity, and I thrived on the

freedom I had with the

programs I was using.

Animation has become

a hobby of mine, where

I continue to use it on

my free time. After I

Graduated high school

with honors I went to

SDSU to study Graphic

Design. The same year

my older sister Carley

graduated SDSU with

Bachelors in Art.

It was the start of

winter, and a couple

friends and I went to

Big Bear to go snow-

ing, with amazingly

bright blue skies that

glistened off the moun-

tain. After a couple of

hours on the slopes,

boarding. We stayed

at my friend’s cabin,

which is walking dis-

tance from the lifts.

The night before we

went snowboarding, we

hung out and had a few

drinks with a couple

friends, celebrating our

first trip out snowboard-

ing. The next morning

we all strapped up

our gear, our boots,

our boards, our bind-

ings, and headed to

the mountain. It was a

beautiful Sunday morn-

I was feeling good,

but most of the snow

started melting and

it was starting to get

very icy. We still had a

good four hours until it

would get dark so we

kept riding the slushy

snow. I would ride a

little freestyle, hitting

the jumps, the boxes,

and the rails with ease,

until this ice block of

a ramp completely

altered my snowboard-

ing experience. As I

jumped everything went

Once I hit the ice, my

knee buckled. I tried

getting up thinking it

was just a little sprain,

but every time I did,

I would feel a painful

pop in my knee. My

friends got me some

help and the snow pa-

trol towed me down the

mountain where I got

medical help. I found

out later I tore my ACL

and would need to get

surgery to ever be able

age 21Lived in Tahoe for the

summer, with my brother

Nick. My brother and I

got to spend some time

away from San Diego

and work on fixing up

our fathers cabin. Our

work consisted of paint-

ing, planting flowers,

and hanging out at the

lake. My sister lives

up in Tahoe too, so we

would stay with her most

of the time. She works

at Crystal Bay Casino

in Tahoe. Each year the

Crystal Bay Casino staff

has a softball team that

competes against other

casinos. My brother and

I were invited to play

on the team, although

we had never played

baseball. It didn’t matter

though; everyone would

just drink before the

game, during the game,

and after the game. One

time there was a keg in

the dugout. The game

was a lot of fun and we

ended up helping the

team beat their record

with three wins. While

my brother and I were

up in Tahoe we found

out our sister Carley

was pregnant and I was

going to be an uncle.

age 22A few months of me sit-

ting working on the com-

puter. It was almost more

than a year after the

day I tore my ACL snow-

boarding, that I finally

decided to get it fixed.

The surgery was fast and

everything went well, but

I wasn’t looking forward

to the six months of

rehabilitation. I have had

only one other incident

which forced me to go

to the hospital and that

was when I got stitches

on my chin. Although I’ve

been through a lot, this

surgery on my knee was

a big one for me. After

having this surgery, it

really made me cautious

to all the things I do now.

My friends would always

consider me to be a little

crazy when it came to

doing acrobatic things,

or stupid stunts, but this

incident changed that for

better or worst. I don’t do

any crazy stunts any-

more, but I also haven’t

been playing the sports

I love anymore. This

might be because I fear

that I might go through

the same pain again. I

skill, devotion, and immersion

then became devoted to

music where my broth-

ers, my cousin and I have

started a band playing

a variety of good tunes.

On November 13th,

2009 my sister Carley

had a second child,

and her name is Ava

Dominique Balint. I got

to drive up to see her a

couple weeks later. For

the first time our whole

family got to spend

Thanksgiving in Tahoe,

and it became our fin-

est holiday experience.

3Savoring

a few such moments

Page 26: Daniel J. Deslauriers

“Most anyone who has worked hard in some field of play can recall a moment of astonishment, when all of it-body, mind and the skill that runs through both-came together and the boundar-ies of possibility seemed to open wide before one’s eyes. In these moments of pure and effortless intuition, everything you do seems to turn to gold. Savoring a few such moments—on a basketball court, a soccer field, a ski slope—with the same vivid detail as a first kiss.”

My fathers business,

Treebeard Landscap-

ing asked me to create

a webpage for them.

I have only taken one

web design course, but I

wanted to do it. I actu-

ally ended up designing

the webpage and do-

ing all the photographs

for it. After that I got a

couple more clients who

wanted me to them a

webpage. I had started

my own little business,

I like to call Daniel J

Design. I enjoy being

able to get paid for my

own ideas and creativ-

ity, which hopefully I

can keep this going and

make a career out of it.
