Daniel 11 and 12 are a single vision prefaced by Daniel’s interaction with Gabriel and Jesus recorded in Daniel 10, taking
place in 535BC.
Like Daniel 2, 7, and 8, chapter 11 provides a chronological
prophecy of future powers that affect God’s people.
Why this level of detail? God’s Word can always be trusted as absolute truth. God has foreknowledge that He imparts to His
people (Isa 46:9-10).
{9T 14.2} “The world is stirred with the spirit of war. The prophecy of the eleventh chapter of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Soon
the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place.”
{RH November 24, 1904, Art. B, par. 8} “The judgments of God are in the land. The wars and rumors of wars, the destruction by fire and flood, say clearly that the
time of trouble, which is to increase until the end, is very near at hand. We

even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.” Dan 9:1 “In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the
Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans”
“First year” Gabriel recounts the first full year, 538BC (the city of Babylon
was captured in October, 539BC).
Dan 5:31 “And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore
and two years old.”1, 2
God had previously sent Gabriel to protect Darius the Mede who respected
Daniel according to Daniel 6.

shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.”
4. Xerxes I/Ahasuerus (485-465BC) who made Esther queen. Excelling in
wealth and power, by 480BC Xerxes stirred up 40+ nations and supplied
possibly 300,000 – 2,000,000 troops to battles in Salamis (480BC) and
Plataea (479BC) in failed attempts to capture Athens, Greece (Esther 1:1-
4).
Though 12 kings followed Xerxes I, the Persian empire declined until it was
defeated by Alexander the Great in 331BC.

Dan 11:12 “And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.” Ptolemy IV tried to enter the Most Holy Place in the temple at Jerusalem after the victory at Raphia but the Jews resisted him.
In retribution, according to Jerome, Ptolemy IV had “tens of thousands” of Jews put to death in the Jewish colony in Alexandria.
Likely descendents of those who fled to Egypt in 586BC, against God’s command, taking Jeremiah by force with them (Jer 41:17; 42:13-22; 43:7; 44:1-30). Dan 11:13 “For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.” Antiochus III regrouped with an army of 300,000 (including an alliance with Philip V of Macedon) in about 201BC, after being defeated in Egypt some 15 years earlier, retaking Palestine from Ptolemy V (203-181BC) in the Battle of Panium (Banias, Golan Heights) in 198BC.

Dan 11:14 “And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of
thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the
vision; but they shall fall.” Philip V of Macedon allied with Antiochus III against Ptolemy V, gaining
control of some Egyptian territory in the Cretan Wars1 (205-200BC).
“Establish the vision” (referring to Daniel 8): Hebrews tried to “fulfill” the 2,300 day vision by applying Isa 19:19 “In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof

Dan 11:16 “But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand
before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land,
which by his hand shall be consumed.” Antiochus III conquered all Palestine including the Glorious Land (Israel)
for the Seleucids (Syria).

Dan 11:17 “He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones
with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the
daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not
stand on his side, neither be for him.” Antiochus III gave his daughter, Cleopatra I, to Ptolemy V in 193BC
(Ptolemy was 15 years old), in order to conquer Egypt. Cleopatra, being a
child, was still under the care of her mother and a nurse. To his dismay,
Cleopatra stood against her father, becoming queen of Egypt in 180BC.
Antiochus III expected that the Hebrew people would support his campaign
against Egypt as they did during the Cretan Wars (Dan 11:14).

Dan 11:18 “After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own
behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to
cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to
turn upon him.” Antiochus III took most of the coastal areas and islands of the
Mediterranean, however suffered a humiliating loss by Roman commander
Lucius Cornelius Scipio with 30,000 troops against Antiochus’ 70,000 troops, at the Battle of Magnesia in 190BC.

Dan 11:19 “Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and
not be found.” Facing a high tribute demanded by Rome as agreed to in the 188BC Treaty of
Apamea, Antiochus III tried to rob a temple of Zeus (Bel) at Elymais, Persia,
and was murdered by the temple guards in 187BC.1
Since Antiochus III lost to Rome, the role of the King of the North switches

days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in
battle.” Caesar Augustus (63BC - AD14) reigned 40 years, considered the most
brilliant tax strategist of the Roman Empire.
Luk 2:1 “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.”
Dan 11:45 “And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help

Dan 11:21 “And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the
kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain
the kingdom by flatteries.” Augustus was succeeded by Tiberius Caesar (AD14-37), becoming emperor
through divorce, remarriage.
Tiberius was highly successful in military campaigns in Germany, Armenia,
and Parthia. The 15th year of Tiberius Caesar was AD27 (Luke 3:1).
His reign was marked with mysterious deaths and executions.
He was an eccentric, misunderstood, cruel, and very unpopular.
News of his death brought cheering from the crowds.

overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea,
also the prince of the covenant.” Dan 9:26 “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but
not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the

Dan 8:12b “…it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and

The King of the North enters its papal, Holy Roman empire phase with the
implementation of Emperor Justinian’s code in Rome in 538, legislating its religious tenets/doctrines.

Literally represents the strategy forming the Crusades; spiritually represents

shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against
him.” The “king of the south” is described in Rev 9:1-12.
Pope Urban II (1088-1099) initiated the crusades lasting from 1095-1291 to
blunt the spread of Islam.

many shall fall down slain.” Eat “his delicacies” or “meat”: Represents the non-Biblical doctrines created
and established by the papal church.
“Overflow”: Jerusalem, under Muslim control since 638, was recaptured from Islam on 07/15/1099.1
The pope granted remission of all sins to the crusaders.

Dan 11:27 “And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.” Guy de Lusignon (1150-1194), king of the Jerusalem State, and Raynald of Chatillon (1125-1187), Prince of Antioch, broke a truce with Sultan Saladin.
“Time appointed”: God’s foreknowledge has fixed when the powers of the KoS and KoN will end.
Isaiah 47:11 “Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.” (see Eze 7:26)

own land.” Booty, including many relics and artifacts, was taken to Western Europe
during the crusades.
The Ten Commandments and the plan of salvation was, and continues to be,
misrepresented by the papacy.
The KoN left devastation, however did not occupy the lands of the Arabs.

on the 11th of August, 1840, when the Ottoman power in Constantinople may

“At the very time specified, Turkey, through her ambassadors, accepted the
protection of the allied powers of Europe, and thus placed herself under the

to Egypt on August 11, 1840, fulfilling the Rev 9:15 prophecy.

with them that forsake the holy covenant.” Ottoman naval victories of Preveza (1538) and Dierba (1560) led Pope Pius
V to establish the Holy League 05/25/1571, temporarily stopping the Ottomans
in the Battle of Lepanto on 10/7/1571. Pope Pius V attributed the victory to

Dan 11:45b “…yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” Rev 17:16 “And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.”
Dan 7:11 “I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.”
The destruction of the beast begins at the 6th plague (Rev 16:12-16) and is completed when Jesus returns (Rev 20:8-9).
