Inanhistoricallymaledominatedvenue,a29yearold,5’2”,100poundyoungladywilllead42menintoTurn1atSunday’sNASCARextravaganza,TheDaytona500.DanicaPatrickout-qualifiedallofhermalecounterpartsinlastSunday’sPoleDaydrivingaStewart-HaasRacing-owned,GoDaddy-sponsored,Kendrick-poweredChevrolet. OnPoleDay,whereeachdrivergetstwohotlapswiththebestlapdeterminingposition,sheputdowna196.434MPHrun.Inthecueshewasthe8thdrivertotakethetrackandherspeedremaineduntouchable.

AlanLeshergavetheTreasurer’sReportandsaidwehadbillsforthetrophies,truck,andbanquet.Overthepastyear,theRegionreasuryhasgrownabit,duetotakingovertheAutocrossseries. Theclubtruckdeficiencieshavebeencorrected,andwe’renowwaitingonthetruckgraphicstobecompleted.Thiswillinvolve:1)RetainingtheASCClogo;2)AddingtheRegionlogo;&3)Puttingthewebaddressonthesides.ThisworkshouldbecompletedbeforetheFebruarymeeting. Atthebanquet,CharlieDemmypaidforthedoorprizesandwasreimbursedbyTreasurerAlanLesher. SteveLimbert,membershipchairstatedthemembershipisnowat254. NEWBUSINESS HenrymadearrangementsfortheRegionBanquet,tobeheldJanuary18th,2014attheHolidayInn,Grantville. Henrymadethefollowingmotion:TheExecutiveBoardherebyauthorizesourRegionalExecutivetoincurtheexpensesandexecutesuchcontractsandotherinstrumentsthatarenecessaryinordertoroutinelyoperateourAutocrossandRallyCrossevents.TheExecutiveBoardreservestherighttoreviewforapprovalordisapprovalsuchproposedexpendituresthataredefinedbyTheBoardasnotroutine.Henrymadethemotion,AlanLesher2ndthemotionpassed. HenryhassentouttherequiredannualrenewaldocumentstoSCCA. Chrismovedontotheautocrossinformation,withanautocrossmeetingattheDemmy’sonFebruary12th. GeoffCraig,autocrosschair,saidhe’dliketoseetheeventsrunastwoheats,withthepossibilityofthreeorfourheatsasneeded.ThiswillhavetobechangedfortheSupplementalRegulations.

PatrickoutranallofhermalecounterpartsinlastSunday’sPoleDayqualifyingandpostedthefastestlapspeedof196.434MPH.Shewasalsofastestinthepreviousday’spractice.JeffGordonqualifiedsecondandwillstartSunday’sracebesidePatrickonthefrontrow,PatrickontheinsideandGordonontheoutside. “Ithinkit’sgreattobeapartofhistorywithDanicabeingonthepole,”Gordonsaid.“Ithinkweallknowhowpopularsheisandwhatthiswilldoforoursport.Congratulationstoher.Proudtobeontherewithher.” Fortheuninitiated,Daytona500qualifyingisdifferentthanotherracesonNASCAR’sschedule.OnlyPatrick’sandGordon’sstartingpositionsarelockedinonPoleDay.Tosettherestofthestartinglineup,thedriversmustalsocompeteintwo“Duel”races. theDaytona500fromthefrontrow.ThenontheThursdaybeforetherace,twinDuelqualifyingracesdeterminetherestofthefield’sstartingpositiions.Thesetwo150-mileracessetthefinalstartinglineupfortheDaytona500. Driversthatqualifiedinodd-numberedspotsonPoleDayrunthefirstrace,Duel1,tosetthelineupfortheodd-numbered(insideline)startingpositionsanddriversfromthePoleDayeven-numberedspotsrunthesecondrace,Duel2,tosetthelineupfortheeven-numbered(outsideline)startingpositions.
ThetopfifteendriversfromeachDuel,otherthanthedriversthathavealreadyclinchedthefrontrowspots,willthenqualifyfortheDaytona500inrowstwothrougheighteen. Patrick’spolewinningspeedof196.434MPHwasthefourthfastestsincerestrictorplateswereintroducedin1988.Ken
Schradertopsthelistwithrunsof196.996MPHin1989and196.515MPHin1990,andDaleJarrett’s196.498MPHrunin1995. Beingthepolesitteratthisyear’sDaytona500isn’tPatrick’sfirstmajorracingaccomplishment.Shehaspostedother“firsts”.ShebeganracingintheIndyCarseriesin2005andwasthefirstwomanevertoleadalapatthe2005Indianapolis500andultimatelyfinishedinfourthplace.In2008shewasthefirstwomantowinanIndyCarrace,theJapan300inMotegi,Japan,whereshebeatHelioCastronevesbyfiveseconds!

HaveyoubeencuriousabouthowthosefourinterlockingOlympiclookingringsbecamethecorporatesymbolofAudi?Tofindoutweneedtostepbackintothe1930s,whereautomanufacturersAudi,DKW,Horch,andWandererallproduceddistinctlydifferenttypesofvehiclesintheSaxonyRegionofGermany. FromHorch,foundedbyAugustHorch,cameluxurylimousinesandfeaturedthefirstseries-producedeightcylindercarintheworld.AudiandWandererproducedmid-sizedvehiclesandDKWbuiltsmallfrontwheeldriveeconomycars.Butnonewereabletosurviveindependently,sothefourcompaniesmergedin1932toformAutoUnion.Theywereunitedunderasinglecorporatebannertakingtheformofachainoffouridenticalcircles. AdolfHitlerchosethecompanytodevelopwhathehopedwouldbeGermany’sunbeatableentryontheinternationalGrandPrixcircuit.ThenewcarwasbasedonadesignbyAustrianengineerFerdinandPorsche.TheycompetedasAutoUnionsandwereverysuccessfulallthewhilewearingthefourringbadgeprominently.
By1936AutoUnionracecarswonallpossibletitlesinEuropeanandGermanroadracingaswellasGermanhillclimbing.TheyalsowontheVanderbiltCupRaceheldnearNewYorkCityin1937.Thebadge’ssimilaritytothesymbolfortheOlympicGamescouldsurelyhavebeennocoincidence. AfterWorldWarIIonlytheeconomicalDKWswerebeingbuiltandsomeofthoseweresoldasAutoUnions.ThecompanywaspurchasedbyMercedesBenzin1958andthenbyVolkswagenin1965.AtthattimetheAudinamewasrevivedtoreplaceDKW,andwheretheDKWshadcarriedtheAutoUnionsymbolAudisnowdidthehonors. ThefourringbadgehasbeenachromefixtureoneveryAudisince1965. Itreceivednewstatusin1980withtheintroductionoftheAudifourwheeldriveQuattro.ThroughouttheQuattro’selevenyearrunbetween1980and1991thesportycoupecarriedalargefour-ring,highlygraphicdecalonitslowerdoorpanelstopromotethefourwheeldrivesystem.ItwastheQuattrothatisgivencreditforAudibecomingaperformancebrand. In2012thereweretwoBRAKESevents,oneinSpringandoneinFall.For2013,NickandtheLionsclubarelookingtoagainputonatleasttwoweekendsofschools,andmoreifpossible. BRAKES — An Important Driving Program For Teens

I agree with Chris that this is an important program. We all know there’s no substitute for experience, and the earlier teens are exposed to proper driving technique the better. I’d suggest that after the BRAKES program, the teens be encouraged to extend their car control skills by participating in area autocrosses where speeds coincide with those they will encounter in daily driving. The experience they gain will make them more attentive, more proficient and safer drivers on the street.q— John Rudy

Myfirst“real”racecarwasa1983½DodgeShelbyChargerwhichIacquiredin1987.ItwassetuptorunintheSCCAShowroomStockBclass.Atthetime,ShowroomStockdidreallymeanstock.Thecarswererequiredtohaveoriginal,unmodifiedengines,transmissions,brakes,exhaust,etc.Nospeedpartsallowed!Theentireinteriorhadtoberetained,exceptforminoralterationsallowedinordertoinstalltherequiredsafetyequipment.Asix-point,bolt-inonlyrollcage,awindownet,competitionbeltsandafireextinguisherwererequired. Thedriversseatcouldnotbechanged.Theseriouscarswere“equipped”withradioandA/Cdelete.Thecarswereallowedtobeenteredinnationalracesforthreeyearsandinregionalsfortwomoreyears.Thatwasit,afterfiveyearstheywerenolongereligibletoraceinSCCAunlessconvertedtoanotherclass.TheeligibilityfeaturewasabigreasonbehindtheImprovedTouringclass,butthatisanotherstory. Forthe1990season,IconvertedtheShelbytoImprovedTouringA.Theinteriorwasgutted,aracingseatadded,aheaderandbetterexhaustwereadded.Overtheyears,I
builtandrebuiltseveralengines,wentthroughafewfendersandupgradedthesuspension. Bythelate‘90s,IhadmovedontoNeonracingandallthejoyandheartbreakthatgoesalongwiththat.TheShelbysawlimiteddutyforthenext15orsoyears,mostlyasanautocrosscar.
Iwaslookingatitlastfalljustsittingthereinthegaragecollectingdustandspiders.Thebodywasallbeatupandthemechanicalsand
plumbingwereleakingatseveralplaces.Justliketheowner.Idecidedtolookintothefeasibilityofrestoringthecarbacktoitsoriginal1983½appearance.

Theenginehadbeenlosingoilpressurewhenhot.Itneededanewcrankshaft.Theoilpump,rodsandmainboreswereOK.So,anewcrank,bearingsandgasketswereinstalledinDecember.ThecarwentfromtheengineshoptothebodyshopinlateDecemberforamoreorlesscompleteexternalrestoration. Ittooksometimetoremoveseverallayersoforiginal,re-sprayandtouchuppaint.Thebodyworkwasminimalexceptfortheleftrearquarterwhichhadbeencrunchedseveraltimes.Theundersideofthehoodneededtobede-rusted.Thereweredingsandscrapesalloverthedoorsandfenders.Manyofthefactorytabsforthefrontairdam,extensionsandsideground-effectspanelswerebrokenormissingandhadtobemade,andbothtaillightswereinbadshape.So,IwentshoppingonEbayandwasabletolocatethematreasonableprices.Ialsofoundasupplierforthesidetapestripesanddecals.Theresultswerewellworthit,evenstunningbymystandards.Iamconvincedthecarlooksbetternowthanwhenitwasnew.
