Mother in court for concealment of birthA Zimbabwean national who abandoned her newborn baby at the Tzaneen Showground last weekend will appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Vimbai Svokisi (29) of Tzaneen is facing charge of concealment of birth.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel, Moatshe Ngoepe, the woman was arrested in Tzaneen, after Annelie Venter and her husband Fanie rescued the newborn baby at the showground golf range.

The little girl was found abandoned with a bag full of clothes next to her, at the golf range, at the Tzaneen Showground on

Saturday. Annelie and Fanie were alerted by a

pedestrian that there was a baby in the nearby bush.

They rushed the baby to Van Velden Hospital and she was declared dehydrated. The baby is safe and in good condition at the Van Velden Hospital.

Svokisi appeared in court on Monday and was remanded in police custody pending her next appearance for bail application on July 17.

The court could not process her bail application because it is not certain if she is in the country legally or not.

A BANGLADESH national has complained about the service at Maake police station.

It is alleged that Emran Espahani’s brother was assaulted by three men at the Malabosane Secondary School at Rita Village, in the Maake area on Wednesday.

Espahani called the police and he was told that they are on the way.

Waiting for almost three hours he decided to hire a car and go to the police station.

Upon arriving he was told that there are no police vans.

“It was very frustrating because I was told to wait at the scene that police are coming to help us, my brother was severely assaulted and they took his money and cellphone” said Espahani.

According to witnesses, who wished to remain anonymous, the three men assaulted Espahani’s brother and fl ed the scene in broad day light.

“They beat him so badly and fl ed away with his belongings” said one witness.

Espahani is renting a shop at Rita Village belonging to Mma Machete.

“Espahani called me, telling me his brother was robbed and I rushed to the scene.

We waited and the police did not arrive, then we decided to go to the Maake police station” said Mma Machete.

She further explained that the police refused to open a case for them saying they should bring witnesses.

“When going to the police station we had the names of the robbers and where they live but the police refused to help us” added Mma Machete.

Espahani explained that he does not feel safe anymore.

“It is very scary to be assaulted and even worse to be turned away by the police.

If they do not help us who will” said Espahani.

Contacting Maake police station spokesperson, Rufus Magoro he said “This is out of order.

I will need to investigate the case myself. Yes we have a shortage of police vehicles but immediately when one is available we visit a crime scene.

At the end of the day all cases must be attended to.

I will see to it that this matter is attended to as a matter of urgency” said Magoro.

Dumping babiesis inhumanMokgadi Raphala writes:

WHAT has our world turned into? Why is there so much cruelty among us

people?I felt a need to write this letter after a

newborn baby was found abandoned at the Tzaneen Showground last Saturday.

I felt like a part of me has been ripped off, the child is not mine but the pain that I felt, I still can not explain it.

Imagine the innocent soul. She does not know what is happening around her, she has no idea where she is.

Leaves covering her face, she can not talk, all she does is cry and the worst part there is no one to comfort her.

I am a mother myself, and I worry about my children.

On the way to work I think to myself, are my children safe?

My fellow women what made us to be so heartless, with not even a little conscience left?

Tears ran down my cheeks when I heard the story of the abandoned newborn girl, I

asked myself what kind of a woman would do that to a child who cannot even defend herself.

Children are gifts from God. He blesses us with these harmless souls to ensure that the human kind does not become extinct.

Our children need us, their mothers, to make them feel loved and cared for.

Imagine the pain a child will feel fi nding out that she was once an abandoned bundle. That she was found in the bushes covered with leaves all over her face.

Mothers let us give these children love and ensure that we do not put them in any danger because it is our duty to make sure that they are safe.

If you give birth to a child and you feel you can not take care of the child for any reason, please inform the health workers at the hospital or clinic and they will ensure that the child is taken to a place of safety, where she will get responsible parents to adopt her and offer her a better life.

Or even better let us abstain so that we do not bring innocent souls to this world to make them suffer.

Provincial Water Summit a successIN a bid to fi nd a solution to the water shortage challenge in the province, the Department of Water ans sanitation held a Water and Sanitation Summit in Tzaneen on Thursday.

Held in conjunction with Limpopo provincial government under the theme “Water is life, Sanitation is Dignity” the summit considered various aspects aimed at addressing the water shortage in the province.

Critical amongst these are issues related to water resources and services management, water and sanitation provision to households, bulk infrastructure projects and water to support economic development (supply to agricultural, mining and other water utilizing and dependent industries).

”Apart from water being essential in sustaining quality livelihoods in families, water also plays a catalyst role in facilitating local economic development, fi ghting poverty and averting the outbreaks of controllable diseases such as cholera.

Indeed the provision of water is an integral part of our strategy to ensure economic development and poverty eradication” said Mathabatha.

The Department of Water and Sanitation currently has a number of bulk water infrastructure and sanitation projects currently underway in the province which are aimed at resolving some of the pressing delivery challenges of the province.

The cooperation between National, Provincial and Local governments thus becomes critical to ensure that there is alignment in planning and execution of

delivery. The minister met with the premier, MEC’s and Mayor’s, prior the Water and Sanitation Summit, on Wednesday in line with provincial engagements she has been undertaking through-out the provinces to outline the department’s priorities and the support to be provided in line with the Back-2-Basics programme as introduced by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

“All the projects that the Department will be supporting will have to be assessed for their readiness for implementation, expected output and effectiveness.

Project monitoring and evaluation systems will have to be put in place to ensure that there is value in every Rand spent.

The success of this approach will be based on the development of Water and Sanitation Plan for the whole Province based on what each District Municipality shall have developed. These Plans must be accounted for, bankable as well as indicate the capacity for implementation” said Mokonyane.Mokonyane further said that some of the success that have been achieved in the past 21 years have not been sustainable.

“The boreholes we dug, the raps we erected are non-functional.

To be able to deal with the shortage of water we need to make hard decisions” added Mokonyane.

Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane, Premier Stanley Mathabatha and various MEC’s, Executive Mayors, Mayors, departments and municipal offi cials were among the dignirities who attended the event.

New night vision equipment for park rangersTHE Kruger National Park (KNP)’s ranger corps received a collection of top-of-the-range monocular night-vision equipment on July 9, to the combined value of R3.4 million from Peace Parks Foundation, in order to assist them in their efforts to combat wildlife crime.

Said Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) CEO, Werner Myburgh; “Field rangers remain the most critical fi rst line of defence on the ground against rhino poaching.

With most incursions happening at night, and as criminal syndicates become more and more sophisticated in terms of their tactics and equipment.

Peace Parks Foundation is proud to assist South African National Parks in levelling the playing fi eld with advanced technology that not only ensures a safer working environment for the rangers but also keeps them one step ahead of the poachers.”

Night vision has become a key opto-electronic technology

in modern confl icts that take place in the dark. The new equipment allows for thermal imaging and high

quality depth perception, whilst offering a comfortable and ergonomic size and shape.

Major-General Johan Jooste, who heads up Kruger National Park’s counter-poaching activities, welcomed the contribution: “This generous contribution of such a large quantity of much needed night-vision gear will help rangers throughout the park to gain the advantage and be pro-active, thus not only saving rhinos, but also safeguarding themselves.

The equipment can be seen as a force multiplier that makes the ranger more effective and the same number of people can have a greater effect. We salute the PPF as a valuable ally in our rhino campaign.”

The contribution from Peace Parks Foundation also includes training sessions so as to teach the rangers how

to most effectively utilize the night-vision equipment for their specifi c needs within the unique Kruger National Park environment.

Through its Rhino Protection Programme (RPP), Peace Parks Foundation supports various projects that aim to stop or deter illegal activities on the ground – i.e. at the frontlines of the poaching war; destabilise and interrupt the supply chain through interventions such as intelligence operations; as well as efforts to reduce market demand for illegally traded rhino products.

The RPP is implemented under the auspices of the South African Department of Environmental Affairs in partnership with South African National Parks and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. The roll-out of the multi-faceted programme is made possible through funding from the Dutch and Swedish postcode lotteries and various other private donors and foundations.

REVAMP: Sugar Loaf and Sugar Hill (photo) are both ge ng an all over new look and the re-launch of the “new” shops will take place towards the end of August.

Shoppers in for a treatSUBURBAN Shoppers are in for a treat! Their favourite all-hours convenience stores are going to be revamped and renovated and turned into OK Minimarks. Sugar Loaf and Sugar Hill are both getting an all over new look and the re-launch of the “new” shops will take place towards the end of August.

Owner Lino de Carvalho is very excited about the changes.

“This means a wider variety of products at very competitive prices and better quality control for all our shoppers.”

Management of both outlets apologise sincerely for the inconvenience the building and working will cause over the next two

months and they hope that their shoppers will endure with patience. But the new shopping experience in the new, bigger and better Ok Minimark Sugar Loaf and Sugar Hill will be worth it!

No longer just the café on the corner. With new company branding and franchise backing shoppers can now be assured about a better shopping experience.

“And that’s the bottom line,” says Lino, “it’s all about our customers.”

Watch this publication for details about the re-launch of these two very popular mini supermarkets that have become suburban landmarks of Tzaneen.

Plasieland’s millionaires in the makingBEFORE the start of the mid-year examinations, the senior learners in the Accounting, Business Studies and Economics class of Merensky High School took part in the school’s annual Entrepreneurs Week.

During breaks, fellow learners queued for pizza slices, samoosas, vetkoek, “slap chips”, chicken wings and ice-cream, to mention but a few treats on the menu.

This educational venture offers an opportunity for these learners to develop their entrepreneurial skills. All participants had to formulate and present a business plan, and pay an initial fee to book their stalls. They also had to market their goods before and during the event to earn maximum profi t.

Plasieland would like to thank Ms. Yolandé Rautenbach for expertly organizing the event.

Twee Plasies in wenspan

Netball star takes her place in SA netball teamONE of Merensky High School’s star netball players, Mpho Mokoena, was recently chosen as one of the top 35 u.17 players at the South African All Ages Schools Tournament held at EG Jansen High School in Boksburg.

Plasieland is extremely proud of Mpho,

a member of the Limpopo team at the tournament.

If one takes into account that only three girls from Limpopo were chosen for the prestigious national team,

the achievement is really something to boast about.

Two hundred and forty u.17 girls took to the courts and played their hearts out.

There were no less than twenty four teams per age group.

SASN (South African Schools Netball) is now searching for a sponsor to send these girls on a tour to Australia for coaching sessions and a few games.

Dit lewer so 1,8 ton se trekkrag in ‘n dag.
