Stone Soup and UPAF

During the past ten years Danceworks’ budget has grown from $277,000 to over $1 million. During that same period, the United Performing Arts Fund has been our biggest single source of funds, from $25,700 ten years ago to $126,000 now, or between 8% and 11% of our total income each year. Obviously, UPAF is

very important to us.

The UPAF annual fund drive, underway right now, is like the Stone Soup legend. If everybody contributes, all benefit. If everybody will throw something into the pot, Annie some onions, Peter some peppers or potatoes, Sally a sack of carrots, why pretty soon we’ll have a really nice minestrone. Then the whole town can rejoice, and everybody can sing and play and DANCE, everybody can laugh the UPAF laugh and be glad.

And Sally will be doubly happy, because she will think, “Those are my carrots in there.”

ARTIST NOTES

After taking a tour of Sweet Water Organics and meeting the passionate employees and volunteers who work there, I was struck by the similarities between Danceworks, Inc. and Sweet Water Organics. Certainly our products couldn’t be more different—perch vs. pas de bouree—but the shared philosophy of the two organizations seemed to make us a natural fit for a collaborative project.

Danceworks Performance Company strives to create work for the concert stage that is virtuosic and innovative. Sweet Water Organics’ aquaponic system is a frontrunner in the field, supported by a team of creative thinkers.

Both Danceworks and Sweet Water Organics are committed to reaching beyond the facility walls to connect with a wide variety of community members, so that the work that we do can have a lasting impact. While “Danceworkers” are teaching kids to do the tango, the Sweet Water folks are teaching planting and composting. In the end we are both promoting healthy lifestyles and respect for self and others.

The generosity that has surrounded the creation of Stone Soup is overwhelming. Starting with Sweet Water Organics’ hospitality, it rippled outward to other partners. Honeypie Café—a popular restaurant just down the street from Sweet Water Organics—donated beer for our pre-party and lent a hand in marketing the concert. Karl’s Rentals donated seating to help transform the space into a theatre. Collaborating artists have been generous and inspiring. Composer/musician Seth Warren-Crow was a driving force behind the evening, creating an underlying sound score that has supported the choreographic process. The contributions of Seth and the other musicians—Sean Behling, David Collins and Jeff Klatt—can be seen and heard by all as they improvise live on top of the score. Jan Kellogg and Tony Lyons have been absolutely necessary to this project, providing great insight and passion for producing professional work in a non-traditional space.

Finally, my dear friends and fellow company members—Kim, Liz, Kelly, Melissa, Christal, Karly, Simon, Holly and guest Andy—have all contributed brilliant movement invention, passionate focus and gracious time. They have been the barley, cabbage, onion, milk, carrots, potatoes, salt and pepper, bit of beef and celery—tirelessly and thoughtfully.

Stone Soup is a 45-minute work that runs without an intermission.

It was inspired by the work at Sweet Water Organics as well as by the fable of “Stone Soup.” Seth Warren-Crow has composed an underlying score to which the musicians will improvise. The dancer/choreographers of Danceworks Performance Company have all contributed movement. The end result is something that no one of us could have accomplished alone.

Deborah Farris, Executive Director, has led Danceworks since 2002. During her tenure, the organization has experienced

significant growth in both budget and programming, with annual revenue increasing from $300,000 to more than $1,000,000. During this exciting time, Danceworks received the UPAF Management Excellence Award in 2005 and 2006, and the Education/Outreach Award in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Prior to coming to Danceworks in 2002, Deborah worked with Milwaukee Ballet as Director of Education and Outreach and was on the Milwaukee Ballet School faculty. Before returning to Milwaukee in 1999, she was Assistant Director for Business and Finance of the North Carolina Botanical Garden at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, from 1995-1999, where within her tenure revenues increased more than 400%. Deborah has served on the Department of Dance and Theatre faculties of Tulane University, University of NC at Chapel Hill and UW-Milwaukee, where she is also currently an adjunct faculty member. As an Equity actress, singer and dancer, she has performed extensively throughout the United States, appearing Off and Off-Off Broadway as well as in regional theatre and dance companies. Originally from Milwaukee, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters Degrees from UWM. Deborah received the 2007 Business Journal Woman of Influence Award for Nonprofit Leadership in 2007.

Dani Kuepper, Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company, sponsored by Deborah and Joe Gonzalez, joined DPC

in 1998 and has since choreographed more than 25 dances for the company,

as well as several evening length works. In addition to her commitment to DPC, Dani has done a wide variety of community work on Danceworks’ behalf over the past ten years. She has worked extensively to develop the dance component of Danceworks Intergenerational Multi-Arts Project (IMAP). Dani received both her BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee, where she has been an adjunct faculty member of the UWM dance department since 1999. As an undergraduate at UWM, Dani performed the solo, Mrs. Schultz, at the national American College Dance Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Dani has choreographed extensively in the Milwaukee community and surrounding areas. Her work has been seen at First Stage Children’s Theater, Next Actors Summer Theatre for Youth, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Whitewater, UW-Washington County, North Shore Academy of the Arts, Schauer Arts Center, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Oconomowoc Arts Center, South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center and the Monomoy Theatre in Chatham, Mass. Dani was honored in 2009 as a “Forty Under 40” recipient by the Business Journal of Milwaukee and also received the UWM Alumni Association Teaching Excellence Award for non-tenure track in instructors in 2010.

Kelly Anderson, sponsored by Drs. Jennifer and Alfonse Runquist, is a resident choreographer and company member of DPC. She recently

completed her second evening-length work, Vaudeville, for DPC. Her first, The Bra Project, premiered in 2009. Kelly was named one of the “Next Generation of Leaders” by Milwaukee Magazine. She choreographed “Missed Connections” (Gal Friday Films), and co-created 26 with Milwaukee Opera Theatre. She is a former member of Gerald Casel Dance

(NYC) and performed with Bobbevy (Portland, Ore.), Your Mother Dances, Wild Space and Foothold.

Melissa Anderson, a native of Milwaukee, has had the unequaled pleasure of being a Danceworks Performance

Company member since 2002. She has performed with companies as diverse as the Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Teatro Municipal de San Juan, Southern Ballet Theatre (now the Orlando Ballet) and the Icelandic National Ballet. Melissa is frequently teaching and choreographing for the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters, Dance Masters of Wisconsin and Texas Association Teachers of Dance. She teaches ballet at UWM as a dance lecturer, as well as at the Nancy Dianne studio of Dance and Danceworks.

Karly Biertzer is a 2005 graduate of UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts, with a BFA in dance (high honors). In that time she had the

privilege of dancing for many wonderful faculty and student works. From 2005-2007 she was a member of the Catey Ott Dance Collective. When Karly is not dancing herself, she is working at North Shore Academy of Gymnastics in Cedarburg, where she was a rhythmic gymnast for eight years. It was there that her love for dance began and continued to grow. Karly joined Danceworks Performance Company in 2007. Karly would like to thank her family and friends for all their love and support.

Simon Eichinger, sponsored by Tim and Sue Frautschi, born in Charlotte, North Carolina, moved to Milwaukee at a young age. After

pursuing roles in many different arts fields he eventually received his BFA in Dance from UW-Milwaukee. He has had the privilege of working with multiple choreographers, dancers, directors, playwrights, composers, musicians, painters and more, local and non local, too. He is very content as he currently enjoys his first full season with the beautiful minds and bodies of Danceworks Performance Company. He forever seeks new and thought provoking physical work.

Kim Johnson-Rockafellow, Associate Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company, began her

dance training at Northern Michigan Dance Academy in her hometown of Kingsford, Mich. In 2000, she graduated with high honors from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in dance. Upon graduation, Kim joined DPC and has served as associate artistic director since the 2009-10 season. She has created pieces for DPC as well as Milwaukee Ballet II. Kim has been on faculty at the Milwaukee Ballet School since 2000. In addition to teaching a variety of classes, including ballet, modern, composition and Pilates, she has acted as Children’s Division coordinator, branch manager and helped create curriculum for the school. Kim is a dance lecturer at UWM, where she teaches modern technique and Body Sense.

Holly Keskey was born and raised in the greater Milwaukee area and has been training in all forms of dance since a young age.

While working toward her undergraduate degree at UW-Milwaukee, Holly had the opportunity of performing in works by the entire faculty, and guest artists Daniel Gwirtzman and Uri Sands. Holly was also seen in UWM’s musical theatre performances of West Side Story and HAIR. Holly graduated with her BFA in Dance in 2009 and was a recipient of the Dean’s Honors Award. This past summer she studied with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, while attending their intensive in NYC. This is her second season with DPC.

Liz Hildebrandt Tesch, sponsored by Pat Frost, graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in Dance in 2004. She has worked with

Danceworks, Inc. as an administrator since 2002 and as a DPC company member and dance instructor since 2003. Liz currently holds the position of the Danceworks DanceLAB Director. She is also excited to be back in the Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap (MHBT) realm of Danceworks as the Project Manager of the new MHBT High School Program.

Christal Wagner is pleased to be dancing her 4th season with DPC. She has also danced with Your Mother Dances and has her Bachelor

of Fine Arts degree in Dance from UW-Milwaukee. While at UWM she performed in works by Daniel Gwirtzman, Laura Dean, Ron K. Brown

and Clare Byrne. She has choreographed works and musicals for Milwaukee High School of the arts, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, Milwaukee Ballet II and Danceworks.

Andrew Zanoni recently graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in Dance. Performance opportunities in Milwaukee include

Garth Fagan, Alwin Nikolais, Mark Morris, Ed Burgess, Darci Wutz, Elizabeth Johnson, Simone Ferro and Your Mother Dances. This is his first performance with DPC.

Sean Behling is a Milwaukee based reed player, composer and recording engineer. Recent projects include Folding Line Trio, Boombox Casserole, Antler Antennas, and the Impossible Space Circus - a tribute to Sun Ra.

David Collins is a saxophonist, laptop improvisor, and composer of electroacoustic and instrumental chamber music. He received his education at College of Santa Fe, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Peck School of the Arts Music Composition and Technology program. His works navigate the acoustic and electric music spectrum, utilizing custom software, field recordings, sound synthesis and algorithmic process. David was also a dedicated private music instructor in the Milwaukee area for over 10 years. He currently is involved with the Milwaukee Laptop Orchestra (MiLo) as a saxophonist and laptop improvisor, a laptop duo with Kevin Schlei, and is a trainer and technical support team member for Apple.

Jeff Klatt is active as a cellist in southeastern Wisconsin, performing with a variety of ensembles and ad hoc chamber groups. He teaches cello privately at his home in

Milwaukee. Jeff holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from UW-Milwaukee. When not engaged by music, he makes his living as a helicopter pilot and flight instructor throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Seth Warren-Crow is a sound artist, sound designer, composer, percussionist, and instructor. Seth composes music locally and nationally for dance and theater performances and regularly collaborates with performance artist Heather Warren-Crow as warren-crow+warren-crow. Seth received a BA in English and Religious Studies from Lawrence University in Appleton, and an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, California. Seth is an instructor and musical director for the Dance Department at UW-Milwaukee. He teaches courses in sound art, music, and digital media, and is a sound engineer and composer for dance department performances. He also teaches drum set and hand percussion lessons privately.

Elyse Cohn, Director of Development and Marketing, joined Danceworks in May 2008. A Milwaukee native, Elyse has more than 20 years

of experience in arts administration. She spent 13 years at First Stage Children’s Theater, working in both marketing and development. Most recently Elyse was the director of corporate & foundation giving at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She has also worked for Wild Space Dance Company and Skylight Opera Theater. A dancer and performer throughout her childhood and early adulthood, Elyse received her B.A. in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jan Kellogg, Lighting Designer & Stage Manager, is delighted to return to Milwaukee to work with DPC. The first show she designed for DPC was Lucky Seven in 2003; other favorites include Lights, DPC, Action!, The Bra Project, Living Breathless and Classic Examples. She has designed for Wild Space Dance Company, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks and Milwaukee Opera Theatre. She has also worked with Your Mother Dances, Bialystock and Bloom, Catey Ott Dance Collective, In Tandem Theatre, Carroll College, Danceworks DanceLAB, Theater X, Foothold Dance/Performance, and choreographers Sofi Askenazi, Monica Rodero, Dan Schuchart and Katie Sopoci Drake.

Anthony Lyons, Technical Director, has been engaged with Danceworks in some fashion for thirteen years.Anthony is also technical director for Renaissance Theaterworks, in addition to Danceworks Performance Company.He has worked in various capacities for Skylight Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and Bialystock & Bloom (R.I.P.). In a parallel universe, Anthony is a partner in a small custom carpentry firm.
