OVER THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, Dance Victoria has workedwith its dance partners in Greater Victoria to make January themonth we get the city moving! Scheduled for the last 10 daysof the month, just as your New Year’s resolve starts to fade,Dance Days gives you the opportunity to make good on thepromises you made yourself — get out there, meet new people, find your groove.

At the heart of Dance Days on January 29 and 30, we planto move you in another way. We’re extending a free invitationfor you to join us at our studios for Rough Cuts. You’ll see five

new works by West Coast dance artists over two days plus you’ll be joining a dozen of our dancepresenter colleagues who make the trek to Victoria annually to experience these new pieces inthe intimacy of our studios, performed under work lights. You’ll participate in a dialogue with theartists and meet them at informal receptions between each hour-long showing. These are next-generation artists who have piqued our interest and whose work we’re interested in developing.

Over the past several years, Dance Victoria has been investing in artists through its annualChrystal Dance Prize, artist residencies and its mentor program, the LOLA Projects. We haveappreciated the generous support of donors like Jawl Bundon LLP, D’Ambrosio Architecture +Urbanism, Fisgard Capital and many individuals who helped underwrite these projects.

We’re very proud of what we have accomplished. Two projects we’ve supported were recently cited as among the five top dance events of

2015 by Globe & Mail dance critic Martha Schabas: Out Innerspace Dance Theatre and KiddPivot (Crystal Pite).

On January 29 and 30, we’re presenting the World Premiere of Out Innerspace’s new groupwork, Major Motion Picture, at the Metro Studio. I urge you to join us. Tickets to the premiere onJanuary 29 include a party on the stage with the artists, a live DJ and specialty cocktails.Dance Victoria has participated in commissioning this new Out Innerspace work and has pro-vided the company with two residencies at our studios.

Kidd Pivot’s Betroffenheit, a work that Schabas calls “rare and staggering,” plays the RoyalMarch 11 and 12.

So grab a partner, take a deep breath and step ontothe dance floor or join us for a peek behind the curtainduring Rough Cuts. Dance Days — it’ll move you!

Get out of the coldand step into theheat of BJM!We’re excited to present Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (BJM) onFebruary 26 and 27 at 7:30pm at the Royal Theatre. BJM’s motto isto “provoke emotions through contemporary dance” — and that theydo! The Company is known for its radiant, expressive style that liftsthe soul, earning the Company its title “feel good company.” Whodoesn’t need a little of that in February? BJM also makes aconscious effort to remain accessible to all audiences, making thempopular among both neophytes and informed audiences.

BJM’s Triple Bill, coming to Victoria, tests the virtuosity andendurance of 15 remarkable dancers. In fact, the theme underlyingBJM’s program is energy. Whether it is tribal, urban, unbridled orconcentrated, the energy is visceral, noble and infectious, andconveyed through the Company’s technically proficient, dynamicperformers. The three works: Rouge by Rodrigo Pederneiras; MonoLisa by Itzik Galili; and Kosmos by Andonis Foniadakis, pulse with thestamina of those who refuse to give up and who draw from deeppersonal strength. You’ll be amazed that bodies can move this wayand be so strong — yet convey such breezy effortlessness. Caution:you may have to remind yourself to breathe!

Catch the SPARK! Each March, the SPARK Festival fills the Belfry with performingartists and theatre companies from across Canada.
