Ballet Technique & Pointe
Stephanie Powell is a California native and a tenured Professor of Dance at Long Beach City College. She has taught courses in academia for over 15 years and specializes in Dance History, Classical Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Turns, Zumba, Dance Conditioning, Stretch and Relaxation, Pilates and Yoga. Stephanie is a certified instructor of the New York City Ballet Workout, Zumba, Qignition and BASI Pilates. She is the principal interpreter of the choreographic works of the legendary Donald McKayle, and stages his work around the world. Powell earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Dance with distinction from UC Irvine as a Chancellor’s Fellow and she has danced professionally with the Oakland Ballet, San Francisco Opera, Donald Byrd the Group, Contemporary West Dance Theatre, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Powell has performed in “Lion King” and has appeared on television in the Grammy’s, on Tyra Bank's FabLife, the Jay Leno Show and for artists such as Janet Jackson and Beyonce. Professor Powell continues to dance as a performing artist throughout the US, Australia, Europe and Asia.
Jazz
Tara McFarland holds a BSc in Dance from the University of Idaho and an MSc Dance Science from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, London. She is a professional dancer with Bare Bait Dance Company (Missoula) and is the Ballet Director at On Center Performing Arts. She enjoys teaching dance for theatre for BBD’s MoDE program in public schools, has taught jazz, ballet, contemporary, and hip hop at various venues including the Downtown Dance Collective, Kinetic Arts Dance, Westwoods Center for Performing Arts, the US Navy Rugby Team, and the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. She studied Luigi Jazz Technique under Lorraine Person, as a professional company member with Louder Than Words Dancetheatre under Chris Harris. She has previously performed with Relay Dance Collective, Converge Dance Festival (Seattle), Evolving Doors Dance, Shock Top/Annheiser Busch, as a scholarship student with Kim Robards Dance, and as a guest performer with 3rd Law Dance/Theatre (Denver). She was a member of the Just For Kix National Dance Team, the Mills College Repertory Company, and the Arizona State University Dancing Devils Dance Team. She has served as Artistic Director for the Kinetic Arts Performance Team, as co-director for the WCPA Youth Ballet Company, and directed the Fusion BBoyz Crew. She formerly served as a member of Dance Wire's (Portland) Healthy Dancer Network Steering Committee & has presented research on injuries in dance. She is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science and Seattle Dance & Performing Arts Medicine and has worked as a dancer health screener for One Dance UK, Trinity Laban Health, Allegro Dance Studio, and Cornish College of the Arts.
GUEST FACULTY
Modern
Sonia Engman is a professional choreographer, performer, and educator. Modern dance, ballet, and hip hop techniques are the basis of Sonia’s training. She has trained in Street/Social styles such as Hip Hop, House, and Breaking. Sonia received her BA in Contemporary Dance with a minor in Arts Management from the University of New Mexico where she had the opportunity to work with many artists such as Vladimir Conde Reche, Donna Jewell, Mary Anne Santos Newhall, and Erika Pujic. She traveled to Sölden, Austria with UNM’s Head of Dance, Donna Jewell, to perform in a multi-disciplinary and multimedia performance in the Austrian Alps. She was cast in roles in multiple faculty dance concerts as a soloist and in ensemble work. Sonia relocated to Kansas in 2017 and became an official member of TigerStyle! Crew, a nationally based dance crew, and has performed in video, live stage performances including the Young Choreographer’s Showcase at Symphony Space in New York City, hip hop battles, and other events since. Sonia teaches many styles of dance to both children and adults in Lawrence, KS and in the greater Kansas City area. She has choreographed works for the University of New Mexico and e2 Dance Company in Kansas, City. She will once again be relocating to Houston, Texas in August 2019 to begin another adventure of opportunity and growth, and continue her quest to expand her knowledge and skills.
Improvisation/Composition III-IV
Amber Moon Peterson started her dance career with Keshet Dance Company in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from Keshet's Pre-Professional program in 2007, with her focus primarily in Modern and Ballet and was a repertory dancer there until 2009. She went on to study dance at the University of New Mexico. She then lived in the Long Beach and Los Angeles area from 2009-2015 where she studied under Stephanie Powell and danced with Datugan Dance Theater in 2010. She performed in dance festivals across Southern California including Mixmatch Dance Festival, San Diego Dance Festival, and the Kennith Walker Dance Project. Since 2013 she has been involved with Cohesion Dance Project acting as Rehearsal Director for Nutcracker on the Rocks. She is delighted to now call Helena home, and works with Cohesion Dance Project creating and teaching dance, as well as working as a licensed Massage Therapist. She is passionate about dance as an art form, and the arts in general and enjoys educating dancers as well as continuing her own growth and learning as an active dancer.
Ballet I, Jazz I, Improvisation/Composition II
Nina Murphy is heading into her final year as a dance performance major at the University of Wyoming in the fall. She spent 8 years dancing at the Creative Arts Center and was a member of Premiere Dance Company for 5 years. She has spent the last three summers as a counselor at the Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival, working with members of the Limon Dance Company and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. She had the great fortune of spending her 2018 spring semester in London on a study abroad program. We welcome Nina back to her third year of teaching at Dance The Divide. She is so excited to be teaching again this year.

All tuition must be paid in full before
students will be allowed to attend class. If
you have a balance due on August 5th,
make your payment in the Creative Arts
Center office between 8:00 am and 9:00 am
on August 5th.
Dress Code
Ballet: solid colored leotard, pink
tights and shoes. No skirts, warm-
ups, etc.
All other classes: Appropriate
shoes, tops that cover the midriff
and pants/tights that cover the legs
at least to the knees.
Other Info
Students who usually attend only
ballet classes throughout the year
are welcomed and encouraged to
attend all other disciplines
offered for their level.
If you are only attending any of
the “Evening Classes”,
please check in at Cohesion
Dance Project, at least 10
minutes before the class
