FOREWORD

Welcome to Dance 12, the graduating season of the students from the QUT BFA (Dance Performance) degree. As is customary here in Dance, you will have the opportunity to see all three year groups perform tonight.

2012 has been a year of significant change. Following a lengthy international search, we are very pleased to have appointed a new Head of Dance. Dr Gene Moyle, a graduate of QUT Dance, will be taking up the HoD role from November 5. Gene’s outstanding leadership qualities, as well as her depth of experience with elite athletes and dancers will ensure excellent guidance in another rich developmental phase for QUT Dance. In February, 2013, we will also have the pleasure of welcoming Dr Jennifer Roche, from the University of Limerick, Ireland, as a Lecturer in Dance. Jennifer’s passion and evident love of dance, as well as the embodied knowledges derived from her career in Europe as a dancer, choreographer, director, teacher and researcher, will further contribute to both student and staff growth.

On this year’s overseas tour, the second and third year performance students were led by Sue Leclercq to Taipei and Beijing. Here they had the privilege to perform Csaba Buday’s Momentan, and also to take workshops at the International Festival of Dance Academies and the Beijing Dance Festival. This was once again a wonderful experience through which the students broaden their perspectives, network and define themselves in international contexts. The Brisbane Festival, for which the Creative Industries Faculty is a major sponsor, also provided abundant opportunities for us to see world class companies and to participate with local, national and international artists in performances, master classes, workshops and talks.

We take pride in congratulating two QUT Dance graduates on their recognition through the recent Australian Dance Awards. Natalie Weir, Expressions Dance Company Artistic Director, received the Outstanding Achievement in Choreography and EDC dancer, Elise May, the Outstanding Performance for a Female Dancer. QUT continues the productive formal relationship with EDC. A new partnership, possibly a QUT/Queensland Ballet co-delivery of the BFA (Dance Performance) degree, is currently in the planning stages with QB Artistic Director, Li Cunxin.

Another note of hearty congratulations goes out to Shauna Browne, graduating student, for her winning of the 2012 Patricia Macdonald Scholarship. We trust that this will help you begin your brilliant career!

In tonight’s performance, you will see four works by choreographers Grant McLay, Gareth Belling, Elise May/Samantha Mitchell and Keith Hawley. These artists have been inspired by the QUT Dance performance students and supported by the QUT staff. We hope that you enjoy the performance and we thank you for demonstrating your interest in this important niche of the Queensland cultural environment.

Conversations in Movement

Choreography Grant McLay

Lighting Design Ben HughesCostume Design and Crafting Paula Dunlop Music Zoe KeatingCast 3rd year BFA Dance Performance

The work Conversations in Movement came from the simple idea that as human beings, we use not only verbal language to communicate but our physical body as well. At any given moment, our mind and body is awash with sensory activity, what we see, what we hear, what we smell, what we feel.... So in peeling away of some of this constant updating and interpreted deluge of information, I played with the idea of ’what if’? What if my one hand could talk to another, what if an elbow could communicate to a knee? And in doing so I found a constant dialogue between body parts where narratives were formed and stories are told.

Something Said

Choreography Gareth Belling

Rehearsal Director Csaba Buday Lighting Design Ben Hughes Costume Design Elizabeth Macdonnell Music Max RichterCast 2nd year BFA Dance Performance

This work began it’s life as Say Something in EDC’s LaunchPad 2012 with the simple idea of saying what you mean, and meaning what you say. Simple ideas are often the hardest to live by though, and so Something Said looks at the aftermath of this idea, and at the difficult point where ‘I love you’ means goodbye.

I thank wholeheartedly my six LaunchPad dancers, and hold a special place for tonight’s cast, who have asked the difficult questions with me, emotionally and physically.

Special thanks also to Natalie Weir and Sue Leclercq for the chance to create on these fine young artists, and to Csaba Buday for giving shape and clarity to my choreography.

Memorandum is based on an observation that human behaviour seems to centre around our constant attempts to control our lives, possessions, thoughts, memories and our innermost desires. In this work we are interested in capturing snapshots of ourselves, caught in the act of archiving our pasts and our secrets for safekeeping. Who we choose to let into our world, who we trust and what leverage we gain over others often provide us with a strategy by which we live out our daily lives. Our interactions with each other become a series of transactions, a record of our identity for future reference. It is interesting how we collectively share the desire to express and project these ideas onto others, and how we hold each other captive by our actions.

We have had the wonderful opportunity to re-develop this work after presenting a shorter version of Memorandum in June. In order to extend and develop the ideas in the work, we have workshopped and experimented with new partnerships, group ideas, spacing and structure. It is not often as choreographers we get a “second chance” to present ideas, essentially the work remains the same yet it has been given time and space to soften, deepen, breathe, expand and evolve.
