If 2011 was one of the busiest years for Al Wajba Motors, then 2012 will prove to be one of the most exciting. Ever since we secured the exclusive rights to the Bentley marque a decade ago we have striven to deliver only the most exclusive automobiles coupled with a bespoke customer experience that is worthy of the brands we sell. It is perhaps fitting that ten years ago we started out under the iconic wings of Bentley, a quintessentially British luxury car manufacturer as now, a decade on, we introduce another great British automotive brand which also boasts a long-standing race pedigree and rarely-matched performance values. I am of course referring to McLaren Automotive. As such, we are delighted to soon be delivering new exclusive and luxurious showroom facilities for all of our brands to our loyal customers, fulfilling our service promise to its fullest extent and as a measure of gratitude to the loyal patrons of each of our exemplary brands. I have no doubt that our new location will further encourage our growing customer base to come and experience the quality of service that Al Wajba Motors prides itself on delivering. As I reflect on 2011, it is with great satisfaction I look back on what this company has achieved during its journey to this point, but it is with great excitement and anticipation that, now that 2012 is well underway, I look forward and imagine our next great successes further down the road. While we cannot predict what might be waiting for us around the next corner, the one thing we can guarantee is that, by coming along for the ride with Al Wajba Motors, and with a choice of Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and now McLaren, you are certain to enjoy the journey in both luxury and style.

These are busy times for all of us here at Al Wajba Motors as we prepare, not only for new showroom openings, but also to welcome new product lines our market-leading brands. I am very proud to announce that, after suggesting to Bentley Motors that the brand loyalty of Bentley Qatar’s customers should be repaid by creating something special and exclusive for this key market, the company is going to produce five limited edition Bentley Flying Spur “Qatar Edition” cars. These cars will only built once and will feature exclusive Qatar-inspired design elements that will not be found on any other Bentley in the world. Also, with news that Bentley and Lamborghini are preparing to launch vehicles into the SUV segment of the market, not only do they add a whole new dimension to our product line-up, but we are already seeing a great deal of demand from our loyal brand customers for these new models once they enter production. I can state with confidence, that since its announcement at Geneva, Bentley are giving special attention to developing the luxury SUV segment in Qatar and the wider GCC. Of course with Qatar being such a strong market for SUVs, this expansion of our key brands’ portfolios is sure to spur growth for

not only Al Wajba Motors in the coming years, but for the whole of Qatar’s automotive sector, which we believe is also likely to contribute to the nation’s economic development, as well. While enquiries for the SUVs have been high in number, equally we here at Al Wajba Motors could not be happier at the customer reception for the latest addition to our stable of fine automobiles. The McLaren MP4-12C has generated huge interest from both existing and new clients, all of whom have been very quick to place orders for the first deliveries of this all-new sports car. We have already delivered eight MP4-12C’s to their proud new owners. With these additions, and all of the other exciting changes we have both undergone already and that are expected to come in the future months, we continue to deliver our bespoke, customer-oriented, services to a growing customer base. Through the remainder of 2012, it is my heartfelt belief that by continuing to build on our strong foundation of success, and with the continued support of you, our loyal clients, we will bolster the reputation of Al Wajba Motors as Qatar’s leading luxury automobile provider even further.

When Bentley’s top brass said, on the record, a couple of years ago that its cars would soon be greener to the tune of 40 percent yet still retain that quintessential Bentleyness that we’ve come to know and love, the motoring press raised a collective eyebrow, sighed and thought, “yeah, whatever.” Yet here I am, on a cold, snowy and blustery day in Spain, at the superb Navarra race circuit, climbing into a brand new Continental GT that Bentley says delivers on that very promise.

Kevin Hackett travels to snow-covered Spain to drive the new Bentley Continental V8.

Mere facts and figures can never sum up an experience that’s supposed to be emotive but with this new car they’re entirely relevant, so bear with me while I go through a few of them. This new model has four fewer cylinders than the usual Conti GT. That’ll be eight, then. And those eight cylinders displace two litres less, making it a 4.0. Then there’s the matter of 25kg saved by having this smaller engine (hardly earth shattering that one, I grant you), a price point 10 percent lower than the W12 and, here’s the really important bit: it has a range between visits to the fuel pumps that’s increased by 50 percent.

You might be shrugging your shoulders thinking, “So what? Give me the full fat W12 with all the trimmings!” But wait, think about this: it means that, if you drive one of these on a regular basis, you’ll spend more time enjoying it rather than queuing up at the pumps for a tank full of super unleaded, and that has to be a good thing.

The Continental GT has always been the consummate grand tourer. With its glorious cabin roomy enough for four adults to sit in total comfort, combined with truly effortless and staggering performance from its twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 engine, it was the car that put Bentley back on the map. To tinker around with that winning formula in any way whatsoever must have been a brave step. For a V8 to be a fitting powerplant for a Bentley it needed to feel like it was always like this.

I open the reassuringly heavy driver’s door and relax into a seat that would not be out of place in a royal family’s LearJet. There’s nothing whatsoever to give the game away that this is the W12’s lesser brother – it’s still as Bentley as ever. Twisting the key, the differences start to become apparent because the W12 has one of the deepest exhaust rumbles out there and this V8 sounds very different. It’s still a throaty growl, but there’s a hint of hot rod about it, too. I rather like it. So far, so good.

Heading out of the pit lane, I emerge onto the track and immediately boot it. It would be rude not to. And despite its four

cylinder deficit, this thing moves like a W12. Which means it’s blisteringly fast. After three laps my confidence builds sufficiently for me to throw it into the twisty bits and stamp on the throttle whenever there’s a straight worth exploiting before swapping pedals so the brilliant brakes can wipe off speed in huge dollops with a retardation that shifts my internal organs. All the while, the cabin reverberates to the bass baritone of a V8 that sounds like it could be under the bonnet of a de-tuned NASCAR racer.

It’s nothing short of extraordinary and, after just six laps behind the wheel of the new Bentley, I can’t understand why anyone would want the W12 instead of this. I’ve made up my mind: this is easily the best drivers’ Bentley there has ever been.

Being told there’s just 25kg less weight over the front axle meant little to me just a few minutes ago, but in reality it means the handling is more sprightly than ever before. It actually feels like they’ve reduced the weight by ten times that amount. This thing is alive – less ocean liner and more speedboat.

At 2,295kg, it’s still extremely heavy, don’t get me wrong, but it just doesn’t feel it. I need to find out more so, before I get carried away and bin it on one of the trickier corners, I pull in for a chat with the guys responsible.

Brian Gush, Bentley’s chief development engineer, shows me round the exterior changes first. There’s a new, sharper front bumper treatment; a new, more upright and black-painted grille; new 21-inch wheel designs; a new rear valance; new “figure eight” exhaust tips and, if all that wasn’t enough to tell you

there’s only eight cylinders under the bonnet, the Bentley badges have red centres instead of black.

The all-new aluminium quad-cam 4.0L gives away very little in feel or performance to the old W12. But here’s the really clever bit: at low speeds it isn’t a V8 at all, it’s actually a V4. The seamless change between eight pots and four takes just 40 milliseconds.

There’s also a new eight-speed automatic transmission, through which flows oil that is heated during the engine warm-up, as well as a variety of other energy saving advancements, all of which combine to make sure Bentley kept the promise it made back in 2008. With a CO2 output rating of 275g/km, it’s heartening to note that a Bentley can still drive, look and sound like a Bentley should, and that when car company bosses say they’re serious about changing the way their products harm the planet, they’re actually serious. All in all, even though the V8 is priced at just 10 percent less than the W12, it seems like a bit of a bargain. The GT V8, at first, sounded like a bad idea, but in reality it’s the best thing Bentley has ever built, and that’s quite a statement.

مازالت تتحرك مثل السيارة W12. وهذا يعني أنها سريعة مثلها متاما. وبعد ثالثة

كانت هناك مسافات مستقيمة على الطريق وذلك قبل أن استبدل البداالت ألضغط

V8 وفي غضون ذلك فإن كابينة السيارة تتجاوب مع نغمات باس باريتون للمحرك

وهي النغمة التي تشبه صوت احملركات في سيارات السباق في نسكار.

العادية وبعد 6 دورات خلف تتميز باخلصائص غير السيارة مازالت إن هذه

عجلة القيادة في بنتلي اجلديدة، فإنني أتعجب ملاذا مازال الناس يرغبون في

السيارة W12 بدال من هذه السيارة. ولذلك فلقد عقدت العزم. على هذه الفكرة:

إن هؤالء الذين يقودون هذه السيارات هم أمهر السائقني الذين عرفتهم بنتلي.

وعندما أدرك أن هناك وزن أقل ٢5 كجم على احملور األمامي فإن هذا لم يكن

يعني شيئا بالنسبة لي منذ بضعة دقائق. ولكن هذا في الواقع يعني أن التحكم

في السيارة أفضل ذي قبل. فإن هذا التخفيض في الوزن يجعلك تشعر بالفعل

كما لو كان الوزن قد انخفض عشر مرات زيادة على هذه القيمة. إن هذه السيارة

جتعلك تشعر باحلياة فهي ال تشبه عابرة احمليطات ولكنها مثل الزوارق السريعة.

ومع الوزن ٢٢95 كجم فالزالت السيارة ثقيلة جدا، ولكن ال تفهمني خطأ ، ألنك

لن تشعر بذلك عند قيادتها. وأنني بحاجة ملزيد من االستكشاف لهذا األمر وقبل

أن أغض النظر عن هذه النقطة فإننا بحاجة ألن نكتشف هذا الركن األكثر صعوبة

في الفهم ولذلك فلقد بدأت حديثك في هذا األمر مع هؤالء االشخاص املسئولني.

قام برايان جاش، مهندس التطوير الرئيسي في بنتلي بعرض التعديالت اخلارجية

في التصميم أوال. فهناك معاجلة جديدة للمصدات األمامية أكثر حدة، وهناك

شبكة عمودية ومطلية باللون األسود مع تصميمات العجالت اجلديدة ٢١ بوصة،

وأطراف العادم اجلديدة بشكل رقم ٢٠، وهكذا فإن كل األمور تشير إلى أن

هناك ثمانية سلندرات فقط اسفل غطاء احملرك. وعالمات بنتلي لها مراكز حمراء

بدال من اللون األسود.

جادين في ذلك متاما. وأيضا هناك ميزة أخرى فالسيارة V8 يقل سعرها ١٠ في

املائة عن السيارة W12، وهكذا فإن هذه املسألة تضيف لقوة التفاوض. إن السيارة

عندما قال مدير شركة بنتلي منذ سنتني أن سيارات بنتلي ستصبح أكثر اخضرارا وحماية للبيئة حتى درجة أربعني في املائة ولكنها في نفس الوقت تظل

حتتفظ بالصفات األساسية لسيارات بنتلي والتي نعرفها ونحبها، عندما قال هذا

األمر فلقد تعجبت مجاالت السيارات وكانت في شك من ذلك ولكن ها نحن هنا في

هذا اليوم البارد الثلجي في إسبانيا وفي مضمار سباق نافارا الرائع، مع سيارة

جديدة كونتيننتال GT والتي تقول بنتلي بأنها ستحقق هذا الوعد نفسه.

Last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show saw the Bentley boys pull the covers off a new, more intense Continental GTC.

Taking cues from its GT coupe sibling launched in 2010, the new Continental GTC builds on the highly successful foundation of the previous cabriolet, which premiered in 2006. Bentley’s design and engineering teams have improved virtually every aspect of the iconic convertible with an uncompromising focus on quality.

While the first Continental GTC was elegant and understated, the sharper, more assertive stance of the new model delivers a more contemporary and muscular presence. Advanced manufacturing techniques produce aluminium front wings without the need for seams or welds creating the look and feel of a coachbuilt car. Twenty-inch wheels are now standard with three styles of 21-inch wheel, a first for the GTC, available as an option, reinforcing the distinctive, sporting stance of the new Bentley.

The four-seater luxury convertible features a new, even more spacious and sumptuous hand-crafted cabin, with soft-touch leather hides, an

extensive range of wood veneers, cool-touch metals and deep-pile carpets. There are 17 standard soft-touch leather hide colours with six colour split combinations, complemented by a range of seven veneers, all produced by Bentley’s talented craftsmen and women.

The GTC’s renowned coupe-like refinement is also enhanced. The tailored, multi-layered fabric hood is complemented by acoustic glass and under-body panels, for optimum noise isolation.

Superb everyday practicality for a luxury convertible was a hallmark of the original GTC and much valued by its customers. The cabin of the new GTC is now even more practical, with additional rear legroom, new storage solutions and innovative features such as touch-screen infotainment, automatic seat-belt presenters and a Bentley-designed Neck Warmer for comfortable roof-down motoring, whatever the temperature.

A wider track, front and rear, sharper steering and retuned suspension provide a more exhilarating and class-leading drive. Bentley’s advanced all-wheel drive system features a new 40:60 rear torque bias (compared with 50:50 of the original GTC), which minimises understeer during hard cornering and allows the spirited driver to manage the car’s line and balance through more precise throttle control.

This compelling dynamic package is combined with a more powerful 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine as well as a new QuickShift transmission enabling faster gear changes than ever before. Power output is raised 567bhp and the famed Bentley ‘wave of torque’ has been increased by a further 50Nm to 700Nm.

the most emotional model in the Continental range and a showcase for Bentley design. With its tailored soft top, the GTC is a pure British convertible true to those classic Bentleys of the past. ShootinG StAr: nASSEr Al-AttiyAh

Multi-Olympian, World-Record Skeet shooter, Nasser Al-Attiyah, is a driven man. He is also a driving man, being a global rally star and Dakar 2011 winner. When he steps off the shooting range or climbs out of the monster 4x4s he pounds through the world’s deserts, he drives home in a Bentley. Here’s why.

You’re here at Losail Shooting Range in preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics, in which you will be competing for the fifth time for Qatar in Skeet shooting. How has the training been thus far?Yeah, the training is going very well and I feel well prepared. The last competition I was in was at the Asian Shooting Championships here in Qatar in January, where I achieved a new world record! That has given me more confidence and more focus for the Olympic Games in London. Now I just have to concentrate on my training and conditioning. It’s very easy to lose that confidence and conditioning, so we’re focusing on maintaining them step-by-step.

How does your competition look this year at the Olympics?It will not be easy. You know, there are 36 shooters this year, and each of them has a record. They are all the best in the world ... but I like a challenge. This will be my fifth Olympic games, and that means a lot to me, but I want to do something special this time. At the last Olympics in 2008, I was only two points away from making the final round. This year, it’s different. This year, I feel that I will make it.

And we believe you. You told the world that you would not stop until you won Dakar, and in 2011, you did just that. Is it the same kind of drive at the Olympics?Absolutely. It was my dream to win Dakar, and I won. It’s my dream to win a medal at the Olympics, and I will. Everything that I am doing right now, and will do in the next two months, will be to prepare for the Olympics and to win. I want to be the first athlete from Qatar who wins a gold medal.

To “shift gears,” so to speak, what is it that first drew a multi-Olympian rally champion to the Bentley marquee? When did you first consider getting your Supersport, and why?It was last year when I visited the Al Wajba showroom. I’d seen the Supersport there, and immediately loved it. First of all, it’s a beautiful car. It looks great on the inside and out. It also has a lot of power if I need it, but it’s also great for everyday use. Then there’s the noise of the engine ... that “vrooom!” [laughs] Ooph, I love this car.

I know a lot of drivers, and most of us like sports cars for the speed and the look, but when you come from rallying like me, you want something classy and comfortable. If you want the power, you get it, but if you want to take it easy, you can. That’s why I like the Bentley, too. It gives the speed and toughness that I’m used to in rallying, but the smoothness I need for the road.

Speaking of which, is it difficult to jump from professional driving to road driving?It’s not difficult because I feel like speeding or driving dangerously - it’s the opposite. I put all of my energy when I’m rallying, so when

I come back and drive on the roads, I’m empty. I also want to enjoy taking it easy. It’s like when you go to a restaurant rather than cooking for yourself, you want to sit, relax and enjoy your food.

I also want to respect all of the rules of the street. I never get speeding tickets! I always concentrate on driving safely, because I also know a lot of the young people here look up to me, and I take that very seriously. I want to be a good role model for them, and I want to do what I can to prevent accidents on the road.

How about the styling? Why did you choose the way you styled your Supersport?I chose white basically because it will get less dirty! [laughs] Here in Doha, it’s either clear skies or dust, and it shows more on other cars. I also just love white. The interior I chose was a mix of light brown and cream. I wanted a classy look for it.

Why did you choose a Bentley over a Lambo or McLaren, for example?Well, I have a big collection of cars, and I like to switch between them. But for daily use, I drive the Bentley. It’s something special and it has a level of comfort that is hard to find in other cars. With most sports cars, you can’t drive around in Qatar too long because the engine temperature will get too high, or it’s not comfortable. But my Bentley? It’s perfect.

بنتلي. أحب السبب لهذا ايضا. هذا فعل فيمكنك بروية، األمور تأخذ أن

القيادة من التحويل عليك صعب هل الشأن، بهذا المحترفة الى القيادة على الشوارع العامة؟

انها ليست صعبة، فأنا أسرع أو أقود بخطورة في ميدان السباق - والعكس

لذلك عندما أخرج العامة. اضع كل طاقتي في السباق، يحصل على الطرق

أستمتع أن أود إنني الى باإلضافة بالفراغ. أشعر الطرقات، وأقود على

بوقتي وأترييث. أنها أشبه بالرغبة للذهاب إلى املطعم بدال من الطهي بنفسك،

إذ تريد اجللوس واالسترخاء والتمتع بالطعام.

باإلضافة الى ذلك أريد أن أحترم كل قوانني الشارع. فأنا لم أحصل قط على

ورقة مخالفة لتجاوز السرعة! فأنا أركز دائما على القيادة بأمان، ألنني أعلم

أيضا أن الكثير من الشباب هنا يتطلع الي، وهو امر اتخذه بجدية تامة. أريد

ملنع وقوع الشباب، وأرغب في عمل ما أستطيع لهؤالء قدوة جيدة أكون أن

حوادث على الطريق.

ماذا عن المواصفات؟ لماذا اخترت هذا الطراز من السوبر سبورت الخاص بك؟

في هنا بسهولة! )يضحك( تتسخ لن ألنها األبيض اللون اخترت بساطة بكل

الدوحة، السماء إما ان تكون صافية أو مغبرة، وهذا يظهر أكثر على السيارات ذات

الوان أخرى. باإلضافة الى ذلك فأنا أحب

اللون األبيض. أما بالنسبة لداخل السيارة

Bentley unveiled a brave new concept that could take the famous British marque in a whole new direction.

Bentley offered a vision of the future with a dramatic new Sport Utility Vehicle concept, EXP 9 F, at the Geneva Motor Show. The Company’s designers and engineers created a compelling new take on the Grand Touring Bentley - a vehicle that feels equally at home driving to the opera as it does on the sand dunes.

The EXP 9 F could herald a third Bentley model-line alongside the bespoke Mulsanne and the high performance Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur.

SUV which combines a spacious, versatile cabin and commanding driving position, with Bentley’s hallmark power, performance, advanced technology and hand crafted luxury, would be a natural choice both on and off-road.

From a designer’s perspective, EXP 9 F was a dream project, the chance to create a completely new type of Bentley. From the very beginning, the design team had a clear vision for the new Bentley SUV.

A new class of Bentley allowed the styling team to adopt a more progressive design approach. The exterior is a bold, dynamic statement, combining clean, muscular surfaces with signature character lines, while retaining the qualities of luxury and power.

Key Bentley cues such as the matrix grille, round lamps and the strong power-line and haunch along each flank are reinterpreted for EXP 9 F. The ‘hewn from solid’ design language and innovative detailing, emphasise the robust character of this high-luxury SUV.

Inside, traditional handcrafted elements such as wood, leather and polished metals such as aluminium, bronze and gunmetal are used to create a sense of British luxury, yet the way they are used sets a fresh and contemporary interior ambience. Soft-touch leather contrasts with highly durable surfaces with the concept car design experimenting with the use of saddle leather for the seat backs, top roll and loadspace – while analogue bezels and dials are paired with LCD screen ‘virtual’ instrumentation.

Even the luxurious silk wool floormats are reversible – with one side finished in durable, ribbed saddle leather for use when the driver and passengers are dressed for the great outdoors.

The upright dashboard design features a full-width, one-piece wood veneer with a subtly negative surface and instruments with a

configurable display. The centre console is a blend of functionality and supreme ergonomics with dynamic, architectural layers which help to create a central spine to the cabin. The frame of the console is also a structural component with integrated, sculpted grab handles.

The flowing roof design with a panoramic glass panel is inspired by the roll cages of rally cars, expressing both strength and lightness.

Rear seat passengers can chose between business mode, with generous legroom complete with fold-down keyboard and full internet connectivity via an iPad or tablet, or a more reclined position with powered footrest, drinks table and an infotainment screen for movies. When the rear seats are not in use, they can be powered forward to create a larger loadspace for sports equipment or luggage.

Under the hood, the EXP 9 F concept is based around the Bentley 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine with an 8-speed transmission, both the company’s recently-launched 4.0 litre, twin-turbocharged V8 or a hybrid drivetrain could meet the performance requirements of a pinnacle luxury SUV.

Whilst EXP 9 F is primarily intended to investigate new design territory – and all drivetrain options remain under consideration – any Bentley SUV would offer the thunderous performance the marque is renowned for. The W12 6.0 litre powertrain, for example, could develop 600bhp and 800 Nm of torque with key performance indicators like the top speed and 0-60mph sprint time all setting new benchmarks for the SUV sector.

EXP 9 F represents the chance to take Bentley values of design, craftsmanship and engineering excellence into what would be – literally – new terrain for the brand. Bentley’s experience with the all-wheel drive Continental range makes the concept of a Bentley SUV a natural progression for the company.

Bugatti Automobiles lifted the lid off the most powerful roadster of all time at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March.

Taking its cues from the Veyron Super Sport, Bugatti has increased the power up to 1,200 horsepower of its Grand Sport roadster platform to deliver the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse (which is French for Speed), entering a new dimension of open-top driving. Optically aligned to the Super Sport, which holds the current world production car speed record of 431 km/h, the Vitesse also impresses with its dynamic driving characteristics.

Bugatti’s engineers have developed the current Grand Sport, with its 1,001 HP and 1,250 Nm of torque, into an even more powerful vehicle, bumping up the horsepower by 200 and adding 250 Nm of torque to the car’s already awesome powertrain. The increased power of the new roadster’s 16-cylinder engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers, a technique lifted straight from the blueprints of the Super Sport coupe.

The chassis has also been modified to support the power increase. The Vitesse therefore also ensures the supreme range of excellent features one would expect of a Bugatti, from precise driving dynamics to extraordinary acceleration and braking.

Speaking at the unveiling, Bugatti President Wolfgang Dürheimer explained: “The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible.

“We gave our all to transfer the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport, thereby turning open-top driving itself into an extraordinary experience at high speed.”

It was the Geneva Motor Show’s most talked about, most Googled and most desired car. A one-off “just because we can” project that was sold to unnamed buyer for a staggering price, but which, perhaps more importantly, helped Lamborghini recapture the world’s automotive imagination.

This year’s Geneva Motor Show saw the unveiling of possibly the most exclusive Lamborghini ever to leave the Bullpen: The, quite literally, one-of-a-kind Lamborghini Aventador J (The “J” is a tip of the hat to both the one-off 1970 Jota, a Miura with improved performance and virtually redesigned in every detail, and the rules of the FIA’s “Appendix J,” which defines the technical specification of race cars in the various classes).

Looking like something more akin to a science fiction movie prop, the roofless, windscreen-less car is technically based on the platform of the amazing Aventador LP 700-4, but in this open version, the monocoque has a largely new design, including the two safety bars behind the seats. The absence of a roof and large windshield, as well as some Middle East-essential electronics lowers weight even further. Then there are the soft furnishings. In its first automotive application, Lamborghini has been liberal with its use of a new carbon fibre fabric called “Carbonskin,” made of woven carbon fibres soaked with a very special epoxy resin that stabilises the fibre structure and keeps the material soft. The the company claims that the space-age material fits perfectly to every shape. In the Aventador J, the complete cockpit, along with parts of the seats are covered in

the stuff. Such is its pliability as a material, Lambo believes that there are future uses for it in the high end clothing industry.

With the US$2.6 million price for this one-off-wonder as extreme as the design of the car itself, let’s talk about what the lucky owner will not be getting for his hard-earned cash. Firstly, a windscreen. The Aventador J is capable of speeds in excess of 300km/h so, in order maintain driver safety and prevent wind buffeting, Lambo has designed twin air deflectors, which are just two, small, see-through humps on the front that, in the absence of any explanation from the technicians, one assumes will just disperse the wind past both driver and passenger. The company does offer some advice for dealing with such exposure to the elements, though, simply stating that “the right clothing is a prerequisite for every trip.” The car also doesn’t come equipped with a navigation or audio system. Air con, too, is seen as an extravagance that would simply detract from the car’s raison d’être, which is to simply produce a visceral open-air driving experience like no other.

Amazingly, the Aventador J took just six weeks to conceptualise, design, build and homogolate, with company principal, Stephan


Winkelmann insisting - in January - to the company’s designers that Lamborghini had to have “something special” to show at the mid-March auto event. We here at Dana Jewels would have loved to have been a fly-on-the-wall when that conversation took place. However, with great aplomb, they somehow got the job done and, possibly, the greatest ever Lamborghini was the result.

We will give the final word to Mr. Winkelmann who, at the unveiling of the car in Switzerland, explained: “With the Lamborghini Aventador J, we have moulded our brand DNA into its most definitive form to date. This automobile is as extreme and as uncompromising as only a Lamborghini can be.

“The new Lamborghini Aventador J is the most radical open supersports car in Lamborghini’s history. Its name comes from our tradition and combines an unconventional design with technology innovation. Nowadays, we are confronted with several regulations that we face in the spirit of challenge.

“The Aventador J is the proof that, despite the rules, Lamborghini will always make people dream, even in the future.”

The LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale brings motor racing excitement directly to the road. This new car usurps the Superlegerra as the top model in the Gallardo lineup and is based on the successful race car from the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo single-make race series. The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo championship brings professional racers and gentlemen drivers face-to-face in fiercely fought battles on Europe’s most challenging racetracks such as Monza, Silverstone and Hockenheim. There are many similarities between the racing and road versions of this super sports car. For example, they both share the same V10 powerplant, which is used in the racing version with no modifications. Externally, similarities with the race spec car are clearly evident; it is equipped with the same rear spoiler that offers greater aerodynamic load – achieving an aerodynamic condition three times the load of the Gallardo LP 560-4 coupe – for increased dynamic stability during tight, high-speed driving. As in the race cars, the rear spoiler can be varied manually in order to let the driver optimise the car’s performance according to the track or road characteristics.

Another element taken directly from the racing version is the removable engine hood with quick-release system. Both the spoiler and the hood are of course made of carbon composite material, as are a host of other components on the SuperTrofeo Stradale. Together with aluminium, carbon fibre is the basis behind the extremely lightweight construction of the Gallardo top dog. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale boasts a maximum dry weight of 1340 kilograms. It beats the already lean Gallardo LP 560-4 by 70 kilograms, which gives the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale a stunning power-to-weight ratio of 2.35 kilograms per HP for breathtaking performance. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds and reaches 200 km/h just 10.4 seconds later. Its forward thrust finally tops out at 320 Km/h.

Like the Super Trofeo competition version, the new Super Trofeo Stradale is based on the Gallardo Superleggera technical approach. The V10 powerplant generates 570 HP, equivalent to 419 kW, which is fully available at 8000 RPM. The maximum torque is equally impressive, with the torque curve peaking at 540 Nm at 6500 RPM. The V10’s unique firing order delivers the striking sound you hear in motor racing.

Describing it as the ultimate super athlete in the SUV segment, the Urus concept car, Lamborghini says, will completely redefine dynamics and design in this category.

Remember, this is not the first time that the Raging Bull has dabbled in the SUV segment, with its LM002 “Rambo Lambo,” of which it produced 300 models between 1985 and 1992. However, the Urus combines unique design, a luxurious interior and outstanding performance with versatility and everyday usability.

While it looked cool, had a twelve-cylinder engine putting out 450hp and a top speed of more than 210km/h, such day-to-day comfort and ease of use is not something for which the LM002 will always be remembered. At the same time, however, Lamborghini is committed to making sure the SUV will offer the lowest CO2 output of all comparable vehicles.

Lightweight design is the decisive prerequisite not only for moderate fuel consumption, but also for dynamics and handling. The Urus will set new benchmarks here, too. A low centre of gravity and a highly variable bodyshell height are among the solutions. The car is also notable for its innovative, adaptive aerodynamics. In combination with the variable bodyshell height, the height-adjustable front spoiler ensures a good approach angle and excellent clearance to obstacles - ideal for the rough stuff. At its lowest setting, however, it aids stability when driving at motorway speeds. The form is, of course, aerodynamically refined. At the upper edge of the rear windshield is a deflector that diverts the airflow along the rear windshield and onto the adjustable rear spoiler, allowing the aerodynamic balance of the Urus to be modified to suit prevailing driving conditions.

The luxury SUV segment is successful worldwide and promises continued strong growth and means that a Lamborghini can now

It has been a long time coming, but on a sunny day at Yas Island, James McCarthy finally gets to take on the daddy of all the Raging Bulls, the V12 Aventador.

It looks for all the world like a hungry shark. As the early morning Abu Dhabi sunlight glints dully off its matte black skin and an air of barely-veiled malevolence surrounds the Lamborghini Aventador as it glowers at me on the pit lane of the Yas Marina F1 circuit.

The Aventador looks fast, even though it is standing still. Emanating sheer power with its aggressive, muscular stance, it is like a caged animal waiting for the right moment to maul its keeper. It is, in a word, fierce.

While this is the first Lamborghini to have a completely brand new architecture since the game-changing Gallardo made its debut at the turn of the century, it still sports the instantly recognisable design cues and Raging Bull DNA propagated in the lineage of both its Murcielago and its ultra rare Reventon forebears.

I walk around to the driver’s side door, passing through the heat haze shimmering above the Aventador’s brand new 6,498cc, V12 power plant, which outputs no less than 700hp. As I clamber into the low-slung seat, I am struck by the sheer sense of drama that yells from every fibre of this car, from the hiss of the iconic scissor door as it raises to the dangerous-looking red “missile launch” cover that hides the start button. Equally, the earth-shaking timbre of the engine growling to life when you pluck up the courage to press it, also demands attention.

A crackle comes over the radio, followed by the metallic, disembodied voice of top company test pilot - and my pace car driver for the bull run - Max Venturi: “Right, follow me, we go now.” I follow Venturi’s Gallardo Coupe down the slope, under the bridge and onto the glistening blacktop of the GCC’s premier F1 track.

Jumping like a scalded cat and with a wail of its V10, the pace car speeds away into the distance, and with no encouragement required, I stamp on the loud pedal and scream off in pursuit. With a huge jolt, I feel the phenomenal raw energy of that monstrous power plant as it propels me forward with mind-bending acceleration. There are few words to express the gamut of my emotions at this point, let alone the all-out assault on my senses.

The feedback from the car is such that I can feel every bump in

the road through the steering wheel, just as every change in gear results in a kick to the back as the the 700 Italian thoroughbreds strain at their reins. The scent of alcantara, moistening with perspiration under the white knuckle grip I have on the wheel, creates a heady aroma, as the crescendo of noise from that bellowing V12 exhaust note fills the cabin. It is a full-on sensory overload on every level.

As I plough into the first chicane on the North end of the circuit, I am surprised at how lithe the car feels for its size and how nimble it seems despite its one-and-a-half tonne weight. Much of this, I am sure, can be attributed in equal parts to the pushrod suspension, the fantastic ESP controls and a superbly engineered four-wheel drive system that is designed to handle the massive 690Nm of torque that the Aventador can deliver.

However, even under the watchful eye of the ESP, the rear end is skittish in the tight corners, and there seems to be an ever-present threat of oversteer. It deserves respect and if treated with just enough, you can push the envelope of the car’s in-built control, without actually losing it, resulting in maximum fun and minimum carnage.

As I hit the long back straight, I let Venturi’s pace car put some daylight between us before really flooring it. The high-revving engine is redlining at 8,500rpm and the car screeching like a banshee, it is surprisingly easy to reach 200km/h and not feel like it. If it wasn’t for every other physical indicator telling me I was going very fast, I probably wouldn’t have realised it. The Aventador is capable of achieving a top speed of 350km/h and boasts a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.9 seconds, but as the speedo creeps up past 260km/h, it is time to employ the huge carbon ceramic brakes as I prepare to take the wide sweeping corner that will put me on the pit straight.

I get the deep-seated impression that the matte black behemoth didn’t take well to being reined in and was now taunting me; urging me to set free the beast under the bonnet. Such psychological

bullying probably wouldn’t stop no matter just how fast I was prepared to push it.

Careful to follow Venturi’s line and dropping into third on the apex set me up for a wide, arcing run into the exit bend that would take me back to the pit straight. Just then, Venturi’s metallic voice started issuing a babble of constant instructions through two-way radio.

Following his lead, as I make the turn and twist the wheel into the exit bend, I floor the accelerator causing the back end to slide. Turning into the oversteer, blood is coursing through my adrenaline stream as the car almost power slides into the straight, allowing me to hammer the throttle again and set off into a screaming flypast of the pit lane.

I get another few, similarly evocative laps in before I am forced to give the Aventador up and I pull into the pit lane in a contemplative mood. Of all of the exotic cars I have driven, this one was the most coveted and I have slaked my thirst. For now, at least.

You see, that is what is so appealing about these big Lambos. There is something delinquent in their soul. It’s everything your mother warned would get you into trouble. It’s like falling in with the wrong crowd or the school friend your parents believed was a bad influence. It is equal parts rebellious, naughty, fun, exciting and scary, which is an intoxicating cocktail, a thirst for which can never truly be quenched.

)F1( األول "GCC" املنحدر حتت الكبرى، ثم تعلو فوق القمة السوداء لطريق

إنطلقت السيارة بسرعة رشيقة، مع نعيب ولولة محركها الـ V10، تنطلق عربتي

الدواسة على اضغط جانبي. من حث ألي حاجة وبدون بعيدا، السرعة فائقة

)الوقود( فتنطلق صارخة مالحقة. بخضة عنيفة أشعر بالطاقة األسطورية لذلك

املولد الرهيب للطاقة، وهي تدفعني الى األمام مع تزايد السرعة املذهلة. ال أكاد

أجد من الكلمات ما يعبر عن سلسلة انفعاالتي فى تلك اللحظة، ناهيك عن العصف

الشامل بأحاسيسى ومداركي!! أما رد الفعل من السيارة فهو انه ميكنني ان أشعر

بكل نتوء فى الطريق من خالل عجلة القيادة )التوجيه(، متاما كما ينتج عن كل تغيير

فى تروس السرعة من ركلة الى الوراء، حني يشد األعنة ذلك الكباح )7٠٠( نقى

السالالت االيطالية. رائحة القنطرة مبللة بالعرق الناضح من فرط إحكام قبضتي

)التى ابيضت لها مفاصل اصابعي( على عجلة القيادة، ينبعث عنها عبير نفاذ، في

حني تعج الكابينة بتصاعد الصوت الصادر عن اندفاع عادم احملرك )V12(. عبء

إحساسي فوق االحتمال على كافة املستويات !!

وإذ أنا اشق الطريق الى أول عقبة )chicanc( على الطرف الشمالى للمضمار،

إذ يذهلنى كيف تبدو السيارة رشيقة بالنسبة حلجمها، وكيف تبدو خفيفة احلركة

رغم وزنها الذي يبلغ طنا ونصف الطن. لعل معظم ذلك يرجع – فى يقيني –

الدفع ونظام العجيبة، ESP التحكم ونظم الدفع، ذراع تعليق الى بالتساوى

)Nm 69اللي" اجلبار )٠ للتعامل مع "عزم الرائع التصميم، املصمم الرباعى

الذى ميكن صدوره عن "أفينتادور".

على انه حتى مع وجود عني الـ ESP الرقيبة، فإن الطرف اخللفي غير مستقر في

األركان احملكمة، ويبدو أنه يوجد دائما هناك خطر املبالغة في التوجيه )فرط التوجيه

– oversteering( . إنها حقا جديرة باالحترام. وإذا عوملت مبا يكفي فحسب فإنه ميكنك دفع غالف جهاز التحكم املبيت فى بنية السيارة )built-in control( بدون

ان تفقده فعال، مما يترتب عليه اقصى إثارة ومتعة مع ادنى مخاطر. استعدل ظهر

سيارة فينتورى )Venture( فائقة السرعة وأدعها تلقى بعض ضوء النهار بيننا

قبل ان اقحمها فعال. ويدور احملرك عالي الدوران عند 85٠٠ لفة فى الدقيقة

)rpm(، ويرتفع صوت زحف السيارة فى نعيق. ومن املدهش ان تصل سرعتها

بسهولة الى ٢٠٠ كيلومتر فى الساعة دون ان يبدو عليها ذلك. ولوال أن كل مؤشر

مادي آخر يؤكد لي اننا ننطلق بسرعة فائقة، فلرمبا لم أكن ادرك ذلك بنفسي.

إن الـ: "أفينتادور" قادرة على حتقيق سرعة قصوى تصل الى ٣5٠ كيلومتر في

الساعة، وتزهو بأن باستطاعتها أن تقفز في طلعة البداية من الصفر الى سرعة

١٠٠ كم/ساعة فى ٢,9 ثوان فقط. ولكن عندما يزحف مؤشر السرعة الى ما

السيراميك فرامل الستخدام الوقت حان فقد الساعة، فى كيلومتر ٢6٠ بعد

الكربوني الضخمة وأنا اتهيأ الجتياز الزاوية املتسعة التي سوف تضعني على

مسار املضمار مباشرة. يتوالني انطباع عميق اجلذور بأن "فرس البحر" األسود

املطفي هذا ]يعنى الـ "أفينتادور"[ لم يتعود على الكبح، وأنه اآلن يتهكم علي،

ويحثني على إطالق الوحش الرابض حتت غطاء مقدم السيارة. ورمبا ال يتوقف

ذلك الرعب النفساني، دون مراعاة للسرعة التى اتهيأ بها لدفعه.

التى القمة على "الثالث" الى "ڤينتوري" وانقل متابعة خط على وأنا حريص

تضعني على الطريق الواسع املقوس الى منحنى اخلروج الذي سوف يعيدني

الى استقامة مسار املضمار. عندئذ فقط يبدأ الصوت املعدني اصدار هدير من

التعليمات الثابتة من خالل الراديو ذي االجتاهني. وإذ اتبع قيادته، وأنا أدير

وأضغط على عجلة القيادة الى إنحناءة اخلروج من احللبة فأضغط على دواسة

،)oversteer( البنزين لينزلق الطرف اخللفي، وإذ أعود الى فرط حتويل االجتاه

الى قوتها بأقصى تتجه والسيارة االدرينالني مجرى خالل من دمى يتدفق

مولوال من جديد وانطلق االختناق أطرق صمام أن لي يتيح االستعدال، مما

كأنى أطير الى املضمار.

الـ تسليم الى أضطر أن قبل للذكريات املثيرة املماثلة املراحل ببعض وأمر

"أفينتادور"، والعودة الى الطريق املوصل الى احللبة مستغرقا في التأمل. إن هذه

السيارة هي االشد جشعا من بني كافة السيارات املثيرة التي قمت بقيادتها، وقد

أطفأت بعض ظمئى، ولو اآلن على األقل.

هكذا ترى سر جاذبية هذه "الالمبو" )Lambos( الضخمة. هناك شيء ما من

يجلب قد أنه من أمك كانت حتذرك ما كل إنها نفسها. فى الكامن اجلنوح

لك املتاعب. إنه كالوقوع فى حشد غير مناسب أو على صديق دراسة يعتقد

واإلثارة، واملتعة، والشقاوة، التمرد، إنها عليك. سيئا تأثيرا له ان والداك

والفزع .... كل ذلك على السواء، أي مزيج )كوكتيل( مسكر، ال ميكن مطلقا

إطفاء الظمأ إليه.


"أفينتادور" تأكيد للحياة )الموقف األول(

بعد تفكير طويل، استقر رأي جيمس مكارثي في يوم مشمس على جزيرة)Raging Bulls( "سيدة كافة "الثيران الهائجة ،)V12) "ياس" على اقتناء "أفينتادور"

يبدو جائعة، "قرش" سمكة وكأنها باحثة، العالم كل على تطل وهي شعاع شمس الصباح الباكر في ابوظبى وهو يرتد فى ضجر عن اللون األسود

املطفي، وعندئذ يحيط جو من احلقد غير املتوارى بالـ "أفينتادور" الالمبورغيني

"ياس سباق حلبة في شزرا إلى تنظر وهي )Lamborghini Aventador(.F1 "مارينا

يبدو على األفينتادور – حتى وهي قابعة ساكنة – إنها فائقة السرعة. إنها تشع

قوة مطلقة، في وقفتها املتحدية، املوحية بالقوة اجلبارة، وكأنها ثور هائج حبيس

باختصار في قفصه، ينتظر اللحظة املواتية لالنقضاض على حارسه. إنها –

– مفترسة متوحشة.

ومع أن هذه هي أول وحدة من طراز "المبورغيني" يكون لها هيكل جديد الشكل

متاما، منذ أن طرحه – في مطلع هذا القرن – جاالردو )Gallardo(، اخلبير في

تغيير مسار اللعبة، فإنها تنافس من أول وهلة طوابير التصميم املعترف بها. و

Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife might be the great leveller when it comes to punishing racetracks and its fearsome reputation is well earned, but in the UK there’s a small, almost nondescript circuit, in a bleak and deserted disused airfield, that’s no doubt familiar to millions more people than the ’Ring ever will be: the Top Gear track.

As unlikely as it might seem, Hammerhead, Chicago, Follow-Through and Gambon have joined the ranks of the world’s best-known corners, rubbing shoulders with those of the greatest F1 tracks. It is here, on the normally windswept Dunsfold track, that 2.82km of shoddy tarmac and concrete is used and abused to sort the wheat from the chaff, the boys from the men and the truly great road cars from the also-rans. And right now the McLaren MP4-12C is on top of the leader board, having been piloted by The Stig to a crushing lap time of 1:16.20.

Granted, three other road legal cars have been quicker, but nobody in their right mind would refer to them as bona fide production road cars. The MP4-12C, however, is a track day weapon that you can comfortably do the work commute in without compromise at either end of the driving spectrum. So now it’s my turn to test it out for myself, there is only one place suitable. Bags packed, I head for a rather inclement England and try to contain the schoolboy giddiness that comes from the prospect of ticking yet another box on the career wish list.

When I eventually arrive at the venue, the sky is leaden and snow is thawing on the ground. The famous orange hue of one of the MP4s practically screams against the enveloping greyness and I’m feeling apprehensive. While the generous run-off available at Dunsfold should ensure I don’t do too much damage to my car, my reputation could well end up in tatters if my lap times don’t come up to scratch.

I’ve already experienced the new McLaren on British roads and been rendered speechless by its sheer breadth of capabilities. Quiet and incredibly refined when you want it to be, it nevertheless has

the ability to change character at the touch of a couple of buttons, leaving everything else out there in its wake. Now, though, The Stig’s stomping ground beckons.

I press the starter button and the twin-turbo, 592hp V8 that sits at midships and extremely low down in the car’s chassis barks into life. The engine sounds meaty and purposeful as I select Drive from the small array of buttons between the two seats. The track surface is reasonably dry but it’s extremely cold, so my instructor wastes no time in climbing in to show me round the track. It’s basically a figure of eight but there are precious few visual markers for you to get your bearings, so I can fully understand how some of the track’s more famous visitors have managed to get lost on the way round.

I carry out four quick laps to familiarise myself with the layout, trying not to be mesmerised by where I am. The most obvious

Top Gear association is the Follow-Through, which is a high-speed left hand corner, marked by a wall of tyres. Lift off here and you really will be in trouble – never has a racetrack corner been more aptly named.

The car is rigged with cameras and data loggers to record my every movement. Brilliant. My passenger, one of McLaren’s test drivers, talks me through another lap and I pile on the speed while all that race-bred technology starts baring its teeth. The powertrain and handling rotary switches have been set to Track mode, making the suspension firmer and the 12C feels exactly as a car built by one of the most successful F1 teams in history should feel.

My first timed lap comes up at 1:26.85. I shave another second off that time with the second lap but on the third I overcook it exiting Chicago and the rear of the car goes wide, with the tyres screaming in protest before the computers sort me out. 1:28.11 is the time, so my mishap has cost me almost three seconds. Then it all starts to come together. My lines are good, I’m carrying more speed into corners and using the superb brakes to better effect. The result? A pretty honourable 1:25.25, which turns out to be the fastest lap set by any of the journalists here today and quicker than The Stig managed in a Porsche 911 Turbo. Result indeed!

Returning to base, I’m offered a couple of hot laps with another instructor. Knowing full well that my smug self-satisfaction will take a hammering with an expert behind the wheel, I reluctantly climb in and he really shows me how it’s done. He throttles the 12C in the way its maker intended, obliterating my best lap time by nine whole seconds. I am officially in awe.

I’m in awe, not only of this man’s incredible skill, but in the way this car can tackle absolutely anything that’s thrown at it. It’s a towering achievement and a happy pointer to what future models will be like from McLaren Automotive. In fact for me, right here, right now, it’s the greatest sports car there is, it really is that good. And on that bombshell....

لتسجيل جميع حركاتي. رائع، بيانات بكاميرات ومسجالت والسيارة مجهزة

من إلى يتحدث مكالرين. فريق في االختبار سائقي أحد هو معي الراكب

خالل لفة أخرى وأنا أبالغ في السرعة. بينما تكنولوجيا السباق هذه تبدأ في

التكشير عن أنيابها.

وصل الوقت الذي حققته في اللفة األولى ١:٢6.85، وقد أنقصت ثانية أخرى

من هذا الوقت في لفة ثانية. بعدها بدأت جميع اإلجنازات تأتي معا. فأصبحت

الرائعة املكابح األركان وأستخدم في أكبر أزيد سرعة خطوطي جيدة، وكنت

لتأثير أفضل. وكانت النتيجة مشرفة إلى حد كبير ٢5.١:٢5.

وعودة إلى قواعدنا، فأنا في دهشة من القدرة التي لهذه السيارة والتي متكنها

من معاجلة أي شيء قد يعترض طريقها على اإلطالق. وفي احلقيقة ، واآلن وهنا

بالنسبة لي، إنها أعظم سيارة رياضية على اإلطالق، وإنها حقا بهذه اجلودة،

وإنها حقا ملفاجأة ...

حققت وقت قياسي ساحق لللفة بلغ ٢٠.١:١6.

During his whistle-stop tour of the GCC, McLaren Automotive’s Managing Director made time to sit down with Dana Jewels to talk about the roll-out of the amazing MP4-12C.

Antony ShEriff

Tell us a little bit about how things are going with McLaren in the region. We understand there have been a few hiccups and a couple of delays, but you are up and running in the UAE. How is it going with the rest of the region?It is going pretty well. The delays were associated with us essentially starting a brand new company, we built a brand new production facility and we got a little bit behind on production, so we chose to move some of the market launches back in the Middle East. The Gulf countries got moved back to the very end of last year and the beginning of this year. The factory is now running at full speed so deliveries are coming and have been for several months now. The MP4-12C has been very well received and is one of the reasons that I am here to speak to our dealers. Certain customers who have been to the factory have written to me, and one thing that is clear is that the core values of this car are really resonating with them. I was speaking earlier today with our dealer from Jeddah about one of his customers who has bought every super sports car ever made, in some cases many of the same model. After he had the MP4-12C for a day, he called up and said that this is the best car that he had ever driven. They are liking it for the right reasons. The car is quite understated but it does have a tremendous amount of real technology, which does things that make the car quicker and better to drive. It is good to know that the customers that have taken note of this and that it is having the same effect on them that it did on us when we were developing the car.

It is very much a driver’s car and probably one of the most exciting that we have driven and, while that is its raison d’etra, there is much more to it than just being a good car, is there not?We talk about what luxury is. For me, the most exciting thing about McLaren - I am a car guy, I love cars - is that it is just as much a high tech company because we put so much technology into our cars. Mostly cars are about assembling existing technologies into something that looks nice and sort of works a little bit better than

how it did before. We really do take new technologies that haven’t been used before, inventing them to make cars better, but McLaren is above and beyond it all, a luxury goods company as well. Luxury goods are about making a very high quality product of endearing value and taking wonderful care of customers. In many ways that is the less obvious part of what we do, so part of the inner spiritual value of the car is what makes it a great luxury product, as well as being coupled with the services that we offer to our customers.

Things are getting a little difficult in Europe at the moment and there is a lot of talk about the economic climate changing quite dramatically over the next twelve months. How are you finding the European market particularly for luxury cars? Will this economic tremor going on with Greece and the Euro have a big effect on the way that you go forward being at such an early stage with the company?It has some effect, but to tell the truth one of the decisions that we have made, which was very wise in retrospect, was that rather than taking a cautious regional approach, we decided to launch globally at once, with just a few months of lag from the first wave. Our distribution strategy is fundamentally different from our competitors, although on the face of it you see McLaren dealers here which is nice, and then you see Ferrari down the street, but in actual fact we are far less dense. You won’t tend to see us so much in the GCC because of how compact the market is, but as you go into other places around the world you will tend to see that we have a dealer in London while our competitors have about five dealers covering the same area. That ends up driving a very low level of profitability for dealers, which they compensate for by giving terrible service to the customers. Our strategy has been

to have very few dealers, but put them, globally, pretty much everywhere. So our biggest competitor has close to two hundred dealers around the world and we have only thirty eight, but we are in eighteen different countries so we have a very broad geographic spread. What does this mean? Yes, Europe is a bit of a problem in some areas, but we don’t have have volume ambitions. We don’t need to sell tons of cars in order to make profit. We have been focusing very much also on trying to find customers for our cars who are the right type of customers, people that will buy it, use it, enjoy it as opposed to the people who will buy it and at the moment they have bought it, they are looking to see how they can already make a 10% profit on it if they sell it to somebody else.

What is the current road map for McLaren. Where is the progression now that you’re starting to get the MP4-12C out there?This is an important week for us in the Middle East because we are opening a set of dealerships, we are having dinner with customers and having a soft opening in Doha, we are going to be opening Abu Dhabi and Jeddah in the next week, Bahrain will be open by the end of the summer and so all of the facilities will be fully up and running. The GCC is pretty much filled out; this is probably the only region where we have pushed to open all of the logical points sooner rather than later. Why? Because the customers in this region are very discerning and very demanding, and if they want something they will get it. Our next wave is a push into China. Then we will launch our next model. After we launched the MP4-12C last year, we said that there would be something new every year. This year there will be something new, and there will be something new next year and the year after.

العام. حاليا يعمل املصنع بأقصى سرعة، العام املاضي وبداية هذا اواخر

سي ٤-١٢ إم.بي سيارة نالت اآلن. أشهر لعدة جار البضائع وتسليم

للتحدث مع موزعينا للغاية. ومن أسباب وجودي أنا هنا هو استقباال كبيرا

معظم دول مجلس التعاون اخلليجي بوجودها الفعلي، إذ هي املنطقة الوحيدة التي

حاولنا فيها جاهدين فتح وكاالت في اكثر املناطق حيوية وبأسرع وقت ممكن.

Hani Darwazeh is not only the General Manager of Fine Art Furniture, he is also a wealth of historical information, making him Doha’s newest and most knowledgeable furnishing king. company created in 1996 by legendary eccentric, Paul Maitland-Smith, approached Charles Edward Maurice, brother of the late Princess Diana, 9th Earl Spencer and current owner of Althorp, some five years ago with a proposition to recreate the palace’s rich and diverse interior designs and furnishings. Acknowledging Theodore Alexander’s reputation for specialising in recreating furniture from the 18th to 19th centuries, and agreeing that it was not only a great way to facilitate the dispersal of Althorp and the Spencer’s shared renown throughout the international luxury sphere, but also a fine way to fund the constant maintenance and upkeep of the home itself, he agreed to the partnership and the company has been going strong since.

The two main collections under the Althorp Living History banner available at the Fine Art Furniture showroom are, firstly, the Admiralty Collection, which is inspired by the second Earl Spencer, named 1st Lord of Admiralty in 1795, and is distinguished by strong, masculine design elements, like its ubiquitous brass sabers. Secondly is the Patchwork collection, which is a creative derivative of the bedroom designs of Countess Charlotte Spencer. The furniture designs of both collections are nothing short of breathtaking in form and elegant in function. Some of the pieces in each collection are exact replicas, meticulously and painstakingly recreated by hand in the Vietnam-based headquarters of Theodore Alexander by craftsmen that are unrivalled in their trade. Others are not direct recreations, but are pieces inspired by the design trends and styles of the time. For example, the geometric styles that set apart the Patchwork collection are not a descendent of the woodwork in Althorp, but rather, as previously mentioned, adapted from the embroidery and fabric work in the countess’s bedroom.

The diversity within Fine Art Furnishing is quite frankly nigh-unfathomable. As Theodore Alexander is

able to recreate most furnishings within Althorp, the sum total of which ranges in style over a 500 year period and covers the design spectrum between old world formal to new world casual, interested collectors are able to obtain everything from an ornate early 18th century, Oriental-inspired Chinoiserie Cabinet to a more minimalist (yet no less refined) mid-19th century rotating and adjustable dining table. Its vast collection of desks, tables, beds, sofas, chairs, cabinets, decorations and miscellaneous accessories is seemingly infinite in breadth. Luckily Fine Art Furniture is able to deliver each available piece within the Althorp collection, all of which come with authenticity documentation, which Hani happily shows contains not only a description of the piece itself, but a brief history about the original article from which it was inspired. Each one also comes with something that I found to be a very nice old-world touch: the cast coat-of-arms seal from the Althorp house.

Because most of the items are shipped by sea, an order takes around six months (in total) to get to the showroom in Qatar, unless you are lucky and what you are after is one of the limited items in stock. The prices, depending on the size and nature of the item, are of course what you would expect from a high-end furniture retailer, but are not extortionate and well-worth the inherent history that resonates throughout every piece. To put it simply, to own something from the Theodore Alexander Althorp collection is to own a piece of history.

At the recent Qatar Traffic Week, it was firmly established that Qatar’s traffic police are some of the world’s most stylishly equipped. The event, which showcased some of the cutting-edge police equipment and vehicles being used by Qatar’s emergency services, included this Traffic Police Bentley. Fully appointed with all the equipment our boys in blue need to go about their daily business of keeping our roads safe, this Bentley Continental looked great in the recognisable blue, green and white livery of Qatar highways’ finest.

في أسبوع املرور في قطر والذي مت االحتفال به مؤخرا، فلقد تبني بوضوح وبصورة قاطعة أن شرطة املرور في قطر مجهزة بتجهيزات تعتبر من التجهيزات
