Foreword

Dan and I have dedicated our time developing our own style of magic. Webelieve we have created more original flourishes than any other magician. Ourstyle of magic is very flashy and visual, it happens in your face. We credit LeeAsher, Brian Tudor and Joey Burton, as they were the first to inspire us with theirincredible flourishes and magic. We also must thank Chris Kenner. His version ofSybil found in his book, OUT OF CONTROL was the first multi-packet cut welearned. We must also thank Ricky Smith, Ashford Kneitel, Paul David, JoshSadowsky and Popov for creating truly remarkable flourishes that have inspiredus.

Dan and I have both been experimenting with old classics. In this manual there isan effect titled Collectors, only the subtitle reads, “It’s not what you think”. If youlike this classic effect and you like flourishes you will definitely love what we haveput together. If you have always wanted to show off your second deal but havenever mastered it, The Second Deal Production will not only prove you cansecond deal, it will also prove you can magically produce the four aces fasterthan a Ferrari 360 Spider, one of the latest cuts to our collection found in thismanual.

If you perform gambling demonstrations you might want to checkout TheBlackjack Production. Imagine producing the four aces after all the cutting andshuffling you desire. You say “Well, the four aces would make a great pokerhand, but were not playing poker…were playing blackjack”. It only takes asecond to have a display of four hands of blackjack matched in suit.

We hope you enjoy VOLUME 1 of NURSERY RHYMES. We think you will besurprised at how easy most of the items in this manual actually are. If you haveany questions regarding any of the material in this manual or our other productsplease email us at: [email protected] and we will be happy to answer yourquestions.

Blackjack Production

Effect: Magician produces the four aces, pauses for a second and decides tomake four hands of blackjack. The four jacks materialize under the aces, extremely visual.

We have two versions of this production; they both require the same setup. Hereare the two versions, fully explained.

Setup for Version 1 and 2:From bottom up

Ac-Jd-Ad-Ah-Js_____________________________ Jc-As-Jh

NOTE: The line separating the setup represents the deck, thus your setup shouldread, five cards on bottom-rest of deck- three cards on top.

Explanation for Version 1:Place the deck face down on the table, as if you were going to give it a riffleshuffle. Place both hands on each side of the deck, thumbs at rear, index fingerson top, and second and third finger in front. Fourth fingers do nothing just relaxthem next to your third fingers.

With your left thumb riffle down the bottom two cards as your right thumb gets abreak in the center of the deck. Situation check: two cards on the table below thedeck; left hand holding the lower half of the deck, right hand holding the upperhalf of the deck with the index fingers on top.

You’re now going to strip out the lower half of the deck to the left with your lefthand. Simultaneously do the Erdnase “Blind Cut” method I. or the Slip Cut, whichis a variation of the Erdnase method, with the left hand. After stripping the lower

portion out all the way, the top card should be on the top of the left hand portion.See the diagram below for a visual of what should be happening.

In the process of:

After:

You’re now going to riffle shuffle the two portions together, but in an unusualway. First drop a small portion of the right hand packet on the table, now start toriffle shuffle the cards. When you reach the top 7 to 10 cards stop, drop the righthand packet and then the left hand packet.

Tilt the deck up so that its back is to the audience (the edge of the cards shouldbe perpendicular with the table). Your thumbs should be on the face of the deckand fingers at the back. Your right hand fingers are going to push the top card ofthe second to the top packet halfway between the two packets. With the left handpush the bottom card of the second to bottom packet half way in. NOTE: Thisaction is identical to the right hand, using the thumb. See the diagram below for avisual of what should be happening.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 6

Your thumbs and fingers’ grab the extreme edges of the deck, so they don’tcontact the in-jogged cards. Strip the interwoven packets apart and show the fouraces.

The sequence just described is the same thing as “Shuffled Aces” found in ourbook Artifice Ruse and Subterfuge in the hands. Only this one is done on thetable instead of in the hands. The idea of producing cards in this manner belongsto Steve Freeman.

With your fingers still on the back of the two packets and thumbs at the frontyou’re going to apply pressure equally to the front and back. By moving yourhands upward the top and bottom cards will slide off the deck, once done, eachhand will contain two cards, an ace and a jack. Place each pair above the deck, which contains jacks on top and the aces out-jogged in the center. In the end youwill have four sets of blackjack hands matched perfectly in suites.

Explanation for Version 2:The second version of this production is based on the first; everything is thesame with the exception of the last paragraph. Therefore in learning version 2,read up until the second to last paragraph and skip down to the paragraph below.

You have just stripped out the interwoven packets and shown the four aces.Place the packets on the table, and place each hand on the packets as if youwere going to riffle shuffle, obviously you’re not going to shuffle them. Riffledown the bottom card (jack) of each packet and get a thumb break above thecard.

Pick up both packets with the out-jogged aces in each one and bring themforward. The next two steps happen at the same time.

1. Drop the bottom card (jack) of each packet onto the table, this isextremely easy to do, just release the bottom card.

2. With your index finger curled on top of each packet, with an ace on topof each. Straighten both your index fingers; you will see that the aces

Right fingerspush the topcard of thesecond to thetop packethalfwaybetween thetwo packets.

slide off of each packet. You can position the aces to where you wantthem to go by sliding your index fingers to the desired position. Youwant the aces to fall onto the Jacks, once done, slide the packets backto their original position and display the four hands of blackjack.

We hope you enjoy these productions or at least the idea of producing fourhands of Blackjack. A nice thing about this production is that all the cards startface down. This gives you the advantage to false shuffle and cut before goinginto the production.

Effect: Have three cards selected and returned to the center of the deck. Youthen produce two aces; you then split those two aces into four aces with a cardface down between each one. Wave the cards over the deck and the last cardappears face down in the center. It all happens very fast and is extremely visual. And unlike most versions of this classic effect, you produce the aces as you findtheir cards.

Setup:• Black ace face up on bottom• Black ace face up third from top• Red ace face up second from top• Red ace face down on top

Method:Spread the cards in your hands making sure not to flash the face up aces. Havethree cards selected, once this is done cut the deck so your setup is in thecenter. Turn your body to the left of the spectators so they can’t see the left sideof the deck. Riffle the upper left hand corner with your thumb until you reach thefirst face up ace. Place the first selected card above the first face up ace, thesecond selection goes above the last face up ace and the third selection goesbelow the last face up ace.

Just remember: Riffle down to first face up ace, place card in, riffle three morecards place second card in, riffle one and place last card in.

With the three selections in the center of the deck, begin to push them flush withthe deck. When they are about half way in the deck apply more pressure to thetop left corner of the cards. This will side-jog (angle) the cards on the inner rightbottom corner. You’re doing the basic multiple-shift, side-jog move. Once theyare jogged to the right your little finger pushes in the bottom two selections andgets a break below the top selection. There should be a face up ace on top of thebottom packet, with your right thumb lift up this ace so it joins the bottom card ofthe upper packet. Once done, cut the deck at the break.

Situation Check: From bottom up• Face up ace on bottom.• Face down selection 2nd from bottom.• Rest of deck• Face down selection 5th from top• Face up ace 4th from top• Face down selection 3rd from top• Face up ace 2nd from top• Face down ace on top

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 9

If the above description is what you have then you’re ready to move on. With thedeck held in your left hand mechanics grip, perform Lennart Green’s Top Shot. You can find this on his videos Green Magic volume 1. We’ll give a briefdescription of the Top Shot for those who don’t know it.

With the deck held in a deep “full grip”, all four fingers rapped around the rightside of the deck. Apply pressure to the upper left corner of the deck with yourthumb; at the same time apply less pressure to the upper right side of the deckwith your index finger. Place your little finger on top of the inner right corner ofthe deck, with heavy pressure. At the same time snap down the card until isreaches the lower corner of the deck. The top card will spin into the right hand, and land face up. The thumb and little finger cause the card to shoot into theother hand and the index finger causes it to turn face up.

After doing the Top Shot, the two aces will be displayed. Place the right handsace out-jogged in the center of the deck. Re-grip the deck with your right hand, thumb on top and fingers on bottom of the deck, Figure 1.

In figure 1 you will notice that the left hand middle finger is touching the upperright corner of the deck; the other fingers are relaxed under the deck. Using themiddle finger you are going to revolve the whole deck (except the top ace) 180°around using your right thumb and index finger as the pivot point. See Figure 2to view a snap shot of the action taking place.

Figure 3 shows what it should look like after you complete the turn.

In figure 3 you will also notice there is an ace sticking out on bottom and anothersecond from top. This is just for clarity for the next move, in reality; you DO NOTwant to flash these cards.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 10

For the next move you want to throw the deck into your left hand retaining the topout-jogged face up ace, the top face down selection and the bottom face up ace.Notice in figure 3 the right thumb contacting both the out-jogged ace and the facedown selection. Apply a small amount of pressure to these cards with the thumbas well as the bottom face up ace, held with your index finger. Toss the deck intothe left hand, the moment you catch the packet slide your left thumb forward, thiswill cause the ace to become out-jogged and thus display the second selection, see Figure 4.

The last selection is on the bottom of the deck. In order to bring it into view youmust first place your right index finger under the left hand packet (support thethree cards using your middle finger and thumb). Contact the bottom card of theright hand packet with your left index finger. As you bring your right-handforward drag the bottom card along with it, using your index finger as a guide.Keep moving your hand forward until the bottom card is free from the deck in theleft hand. It should now be held against the right hand cards with the index finger.Place the right hand packet, with the added card from the bottom on top of thedeck (ace of clubs). When this is done correctly it looks as if you just rub thepackets together and the third selection appears. See Figure 5 for the finaldisplay.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 11

To finish align the cards on top of the deck. Spread the top six cards over neatlywith your left thumb into the right hand (as if you were spreading to have aselection be made). Your right third finger takes the in-jogged ace from behindand adds it to the spread. Take all seven cards in the right hand and turn themover to display the selections.

Version 2: Double SandwichTo produce two selected cards instead of three. The setup remains the same, forclarity here it is again.

NOTE: For listed figures below, please refer back to the above method, as theyare the same.

Setup:• Black ace face up on bottom• Black ace face up third from top• Red ace face up second from top• Red ace face down on top

Method:Spread the cards in your hands making sure not to flash the face up cards. Havetwo cards selected and then cut the deck so your setup is in the center. Turnyour body to the left of the spectators so to hide the left side of the deck. Riffledown the deck at the outer left corner with you left thumb until you get to the firstface up ace, then riffle off three more cards. The last face up ace will be showing.Place the first selected card above the face up ace; riffle one more card (ace)and place the second selected card below this ace.

Just remember: Riffle to first face up ace, then riffle three more cards, place firstselected card in, riffle one more card (ace) and place second selected card in.

As in the first version, angle the cards to the bottom right corner as you pushthem in. Get a break above both selections, with your little finger push down onthe two selections so a break in the deck will open. Retain this break. Come overwith your right hand and riffle off two cards from the bottom of the upper packet

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 12

onto the top of the lower packet with your right thumb. Those two cards will be aface up and a face down ace. Cut the deck at the break and you are set to moveon.

Situations Check: from bottom up• Face up ace on bottom• Face up ace 4th from top• Face down selection 3rd from top• Face up ace 2nd from top• Face down selection on top

After doing the Top Shot (explained in the first version, page 10) the two aces willbe displayed. Place the ace that’s in your right hand out-jogged in the center ofthe deck. Re-grip the deck with your right hand, thumb on top and fingers onbottom of the deck. See Figure 1 for the proper hand positions.

In figure 1 you will notice that the left middle finger is touching the upper rightcorner of the deck; the other fingers are relaxed under the deck. Using the middlefinger you are going to revolve the whole deck (except the top ace) 180° aroundusing your right thumb and index finger as the pivot point. See Figure 2 to view asnap shot of the action taking place.

Figure 3 shows what it should look like after you complete the turn.

In figure 3 you will also notice there is an ace sticking out on bottom and anothersecond from top. This is just for clarity for the next move, in reality; you DO NOTflash these cards.

Toss the deck intothe left hand retaining these three cards. When you catch the packet slide yourleft thumb forward; causing the ace to become out-jogged displaying the secondselection, see Figure 4.

Place the right hand sandwich on the table. Come over and take the left handsandwich off the deck with your right hand stripping out the in-jogged ace as youplace them on the table. Do this by placing your right thumb on both the out-jogged ace and the selection and your right middle finger under the in-joggedace. Pull all three cards to the right and set them on the table. Try to make it lookas if the in-jogged ace was behind the selection and not in the center of the deck, therefore the illusion would appear as if you’ve sandwiched two selections. Whendone correctly this is a very beautiful and stylish effect. Not to mention an entirenew approach of this wonderful classic.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 13

Ferrari 360 Spider

Hold the deck in left hand mechanics grip, come over with your right hand andswing cut a third of the deck into the left hand. Leaving a small portion of thedeck in your left hand mechanics grip and a large portion in your right hand,Biddle-grip. Rotate your right hand 180° around clockwise at the same time youbreak half the deck off with your index finger. Set this lower half in position to doBrian Tudors Revolution cut, see Figure 1.

Perform the revolution cut as your right hand rotates back around to its originalposition. Figure 2 shows the revolution cut taking place, as well as, the rotationof the right hand wrist.

Once the right hand returns to its original position execute the following with theright hand packet: Place your first and second fingers on top of the packet; thumbis at the rear and third finger at the front, see Figure 3.

Revolve your thumb around the backside of the deck until it contacts the bottomcard. Simultaneously rotate your wrist forward, towards the audience. Continuerevolving your thumb around until it reaches the center on the packet and rotateyour wrist around until the packet is face up, see Figures 4 and 5.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 14

Place the face up packet perpendicular with the face down packet in your lefthand, Figure 6.

Move your left thumb up so it will retake and grip the vertical packet. Immediatelybreak off half of the vertical packet with your right thumb as shown in Figure 7.At the same time revolve the packet held with the right thumb and fingers 270°around into the right hand.

In order to revolve the packet a full 270° you need to use your left fingers asleverage. The right thumb revolves the packet around only 90°, once there youcan use your left fingers to flip it over to complete the 270°, see Figure 8 for theposition the packet should now be in.

Execute another Revolution cut with your left hand. Figure 8 shows the action ofthe revolution cut taking place.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 15

As you execute the Revolution cut with your left hand, flip the right hand packet360° around onto the left packet. Accomplish this by positioning the packet inupper mechanics grip with the index finger on bottom. The second, third, andfourth fingers should be on the left side and thumb on the right side. Push up onthe packet with your index finger to concave the packet.

NOTE: You want to apply pressure to both sides of the packet with your thumband fingers, this way when you push up on the packet with your index finger it willcreate tension among the packet, see Figure 9.

When the revolution cut is just about finished, as in figure 9, release pressurewith your thumb; this will cause the packet to flip 360° and land on top of thedeck in the left hand. This flip over action of the packet is very similar to the wayyou flip the card over in Paul Harris’s Instant Replay.

If you don’t know Brian Tudor’s Revolution Cut, it can be substituted with theCharlier Cut. The Revolution Cut can be found in either of Brian’s “Show Off”videos or our book, “Artifice Ruse and Subterfuge in The Hands”.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 16

Second Deal Production

This Production is based on the Two-card production from our book, “ArtificeRuse and Subterfuge in The Hands”. The idea of the production is todemonstrate how to deal to the four aces via the second deal. However, on thefirst attempt to deal a really bad strike second the four aces appear in a “T”formation on your hand.

The Setup:Start by removing the aces (any four of a kind will do) by whichever means. Weprefer to cull the aces, as we normally don’t use this as an opener. The setup ofthe aces from top down is as follows:

AH face down, AC face down, AS face up, XXXXXX rest of deck face down, ADface up

Method:Hold the deck in mechanics grip. Start the production as if you were going to do astrike second deal. However your left thumb should be more toward the center ofthe deck rather then towards the top edge, see figure 1.

As you deal the second card out away from the deck with your right hand, yourthumb should be on the top right corner and the index finger directly below thethumb. Your other fingers should be held in a light fist with the middle fingertouching the base of the thumb, see figure 1 again.

Simultaneously your left hand middle finger is going to buckle the bottom face upace. In a moment you’re going to side-jog it almost its entire length for the finaldisplay. After you’ve buckled the bottom card move your leftsecond, third and fourth fingers as far back to the left as possible, enabling you topush the bottom card out even further.

Your right hand middle finger is going to revolve the second card (ace of clubs)180° around. Do this by placing your right middle finger on top of the second

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 17

card, just below your right thumb. When in position let go with your right thumbas you revolve the card around, see figure 2.

As this is happening push out the bottom card as far as you possibly can. Youwill notice as you revolve the second card around, the top card wants to flip overalso, see figure 2. You will also see in figure 2 how the second card flips aroundonce clipped between the first and second fingers. When you open your left handall the way the top card will rest on the left thumb and the base of the thumb.Below is the final display.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 18

Molecule 2

The grip for this production is the same grip used in the Molecule Cut from ourbook. The grip is almost identical to dealers grip except the middle finger is onthe upper left corner of the deck. The middle finger and the base of the thumbare pivot points, Figure 1.

When you’re ready to start the flourish curl your index finger under the deck butdon’t change anything else. Come over with your right hand and grip the top thirdof the deck in Biddle grip, now break off another third with your right thumb at therear of the deck. Use your left middle finger as a pivot point to lift all threepackets in sort of a “Z” formation, see Figure 2. This is very similar to Z gripexplained thoroughly in our book, “Artifice Ruse and Subterfuge in The Hands”,(see last page for ordering info).

Once in the position pictured above, curl your left index finger under the deck ifyou haven’t already and tilt the bottom packet up in a vertical position by liftingyour index finger. Lower the two right hand packets, resting the middle packet onyour palm. Simultaneously lower the bottompacket back down from the vertical position on top of the middle packet (nowbottom packet), the top packet (right hand packet) is pivoted to the right out ofthe way of the others, see Figure 3.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 19

The new bottom packet (once center packet) should be in-jogged about an inch, see figure 3. The top packet held in Biddle grip is going to be flipped over 180°and land on top of the two packets in the left hand. First release the right thumbfrom the bottom packet. Do the flipping action as described in the Ferrari 360Spider (see figures 3,4 and 5 of the Ferrari 360 Spider, pages 17 and 18). Oncethe packet has been flipped over you should be in a position that looks likeFigure 4.

Flip the face up packet held in the right hand face down on the two packets in theleft hand the same way you would for a double lift. When you flip it over in shouldland aligned with the bottom packet, enabling you to strip the center one out as inFigure 5.

Revolving the packet around your third finger 180° does this. Once the centerpacket is parallel to the left hand cards re-grip it with the thumb on top andfingers below. Now tap the right hand packet against the left hand packet aligningthe cards, see Figure 6.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 20

The next action belongs to T.G. Murphy and can be found in his book,IMAGICATION 1988 under the flourish called Reverse Mid-Air Triple Cut page277. We first saw Lee Asher use this to flip the deck held in dealers grip 360°around really fast. Here is an attempt to explain it without any plagiarism ofIMAGICATION. Put pressure down on the packet with the thumb and middlefinger giving the deck a concave bend. Simultaneously apply pressure with theindex finger from underneath. This creates tension among the packet, if you wereto release your middle finger it would go spinning in the air, which is exactly whatyou want to happen. This is very similar to the last action in the Ferrari 360Spider except done in a lower grip. Before you flip it tilt your left hand about 30°towards your right hand so that when you let go with your right middle finger it willspin 360°around and land face down on top of the right hand packet. See Figure7 for the angle of the right hand and the start of the spinning action.

NOTE: Right before the packet lands on top lift your right thumb up out of theway and replace it as soon as the packet lands on top, see Figure 8.

As a Production:This cut can be used to produce one, two or four cards without changinganything. To produce one card make sure the card you want to produce is ontop, alls you have to do is buckle it heavily. When you flip the packet over air willbe trapped between the packet and the card at 180°. The card will stop spinningbut the packet will continue to spin another 180° and the one card will appearface down in the center as in Figure 9. A similar idea is found in Dan Fleshman’s

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 21

lecture notes, ENCOUNTERS OF THE CLOSE-UP KIND, page 23. It is calledFour Ace Revelation and is worth checking out.

To produce two cards just have the second card from the top face up, anothercard face down on top of that, then do the same production as above. At the endof the production one card will be face up in the center and another face up ontop.

We must give credit to Lee Asher as we both have seen him do the T.G. Murphydeck flip with the buckle to produce a face up card on bottom (We don’t know if itis his or not).

As a four card productionThe setup for the four-card production using the Molecule 2 is as follows.

From top down:As face down, Ah face down, Ac face up, XXX rest of deck face down, Ad faceup.

When completed the Molecule 2, as a one-card production, including the setupabove, you’re ready to move on.

Immediately after the Ace of spades appears out-jogged in the center of thedeck, place your right thumb under the deck as your right fingers rap around theside of the deck, Figure 10.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 22

Revolve the deck 360° around into your left hand. Using your right thumb, pushon the back of the cards as your wrist rotates also. Once you have reached the180° point and the right side of the deck is resting on the left fingers, put your leftthumb on the back of the deck as in Figure 11.

You will also notice in figure 11 that the right fingers are pulling the ace ofdiamonds out. When the ace of diamonds is half way out grab it with the thumbas you flip the rest of the deck all the way over. As the deck is flipping over useyour left thumb to push up on the bottom ace (ace of hearts), see Figure 12.

Balance the ace of diamonds on the left fingers, displaying the four aces.

Nursery Rhymes vol. 1 23

The display of this production is similar to both Lee Asher’s Ambitious Explosionand Brian Tudor’s Awesome Blossom Production. Both these wonderfulproductions can be substituted four ours.
