His career in Spain for the Valencia metro and railway system includes the architectural design consultancy works for over 28 shallow and deep underground stations including airport station, 26 tramway marquees or 45 commuter railway stations as well as a wide range of transit oriented urban developments.

In collaboration with world class international consultants Architectural design consultancy for the Central park project engaging the integration of a new high speed train terminal, the existing Valencia main railway station, the relocation of logistic buildings and integration with a new central urban park over the underground tracks.

Working for 12 years with JPI consultancy as project architect promoted to an Associate Senior architect has given Damian the opportunity to actively participate in the development of the whole transit system of the city and extended metropolitan area of Valencia, Spanish third capital, involving over two million habitants. This includes the development of over 15 new metro stations, Two whole line of tramway with underground tracks, the complete refurbishment and adaptation of the old metropolitan railway system into an integrated metro/railway system involving over 45 stations and the streetscape urban development of many of the most significant landmarks in the city of Valencia and surroundings. This long term implication with the transit system has allowed Damian to witness from a privileged active position the importance and impact of the implementation of the transit system in the development of a medium size capital and their surroundings.

Architectural works in listed buildings included in the Central Park of Valencia Mega-Project.

The Valencia Central Park project is a huge Railway and Urban intervention in the centre of the third capital of Spain. It includes setting underground all railway tracks arriving previously at grade to Valencia’s Modernist monumental main station, to implement a new high speed terminal and transfer with two metro lines, to relocate 11 historic monumental ancillary buildings integrating the Museum of transportation project ( also JPI’s project),and Finally to develop an state of the art urban central park above the underground tracks designed by international consultants (Gustafson Porter and Borgos Pieper were awarded in competition with Zaha Hadid or Jean Nouvel).JPI was actively involved on the process as the reference local consultancy for transportation systems.

Line 1 of Valencia’s metro is the older line crossing the city center from north to south in a deep underground track.

In 2008 JPI architecture is commissioned to develop the accessibility measures on 4 existing central stations according to the city universal accessibility plan. Includes the implementation of lifts, ramps , tactile pavements or signage and wayfinding adaptations

The line T2 of Valencia’s tramway gets underground into the center of the historic city in a cut and cover tunnel. As a result the tramway stations on this stretch of the line adopts the typology of a shallow underground metro station.

In the year 2008 JPI architecture was awarded to develop concept and detailed design for Hermanos Maristas and General Urrutia stations.

Studies for the station mezzanine and platform interior design

The market square station in the centre of the historic city of Valencia supposes the construction of a deep underground station under seven floor of parking and the urban integration of the metro station in the historic urban environment.

In addition to that JPI architecture is charged to develop preliminary interior design of the station’s mezzanine and platform.

The line T2 of Valencia tramway gets underground in a cut and cover tunnel into the centre of the historic city of Valencia. As a result the tramway stations on this stretch of the line adopt the typology of a shallow underground metro station. Includes the urban re-development of one of the most popular avenues in the centre of Valencia.

Transport and territory museum of Valencia, Spain.

In 2007 was awarded for the development of a Transportation Museum in the former railway Ancillary buildings next to the central railway station. All of them filed as part of the city’s architectural heritage

The set of historic modernist buildings was developed into a modern state of the art museum.

After two years this project was integrated into the ambitious “Central park project” explained above.

Architectural design of the Marítimo-Serreria subway station .Line L5 Metro Valencia.

Maritimo-Serreria in an inter-modal transfer station between metro line 5 and the tram line T4. Located on the proximity of the port of Valencia this station features a huge semi-circular skylight opening allowing the Mediterranean natural light to enter the platforms below through a filter of wooden vertical louvers which is a signature feature of JPI’s architecture stations.

The main task for this project of a tramway line across a sub-urban area of the city is to develop pedestrian friendly urban spaces in the nearby of the tramway shelters and transit oriented developments. Thus the tramway corridor is conceived as an agent for the development and improvement of a depressed sub-urban area.

The so called Tramway of the coast project is part of an ambitious plan to extend the metro system from the inland city to the port area that includes restoring the old corniche, implementing the facilities for the America’s cup global event and the urban Formula 1’s Valencia circuit.

In this scenario JPI architecture was commissioned to develop the masterplan and urban detailed design of the tramway corridor and nearby’s as well as the design of Tramway marquees and platforms.
