Make sure you and your family are prepared this winterDaly City has a history of floods and mudslides, especially in El Nio years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that dangerous flash flooding will be on the rise. Flash flooding happens when heavy precipitation hits one area within a short period of time, usually about one to six hours. And according to FEMA, flooding is the most expensive natural disaster and the #1 cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. Step 1: Know Your RiskResidents who live in low-lying areas should move outdoor furniture or indoor items to higher areas to protect them from flood damage. Disconnect electrical appliances and do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. If necessary, consider placing sandbags in strategic areas of your property. In a major event, the City will make every effort to make sandbags available to residents; please call the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources at (650) 991-8200 to inquire. Step 2: Put Together a Disaster Supply KitA basic disaster supply kit should include a clear gallon tub filled with: Battery powered or hand crank radio to listen to

evacuation routes, Flashlight and batteries, First aid kit and whistle, Water and canned food and can opener, Cell phone with external chargers or solar powered

chargers, Prescription medications and eye glasses, Formula and diapers for babies, and Pet food and water for animals.

Step 3: Practice a Family Communication PlanA family communication plan should prepare everyone in the family for the possibility of an emergency during the day when children may be at school or parents at work. Families should designate a first point of contact to check in with and a place to evacuate to. Social media can also be an effective way to communicate with family and friends. To learn more about preparing for an emergency visit www.Ready.gov. And to get the latest City information during a major event, follow the City on Twitter, Facebook, and Nextdoor, or visit the Citys website at www.dalycity.org.

Preparing now for what may come later protects you and your family.

It gives youth, ages 13-18, an opportunity to work in the Afterschool Youth Recreation Program. Voluntutors work with Recreators at one of four sites; giving them opportunities to give back to their community and earn service credits for their school (if applicable). Our goal is to prepare youth in our community to become future recreators in our programs.
