Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (IATA:DFW, ICAO: KDFW, FAA LID: DFW) is the pri-mary international airport serving the DallasFort Worthmetroplex in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the largest hubfor American Airlines, which is headquartered near theairport.DFW has a total area of 78 square kilometres (30 sqmi),[3] making it the largest airport in Texas and the sec-ond largest in the United States (behind Denver Inter-national Airport). 1.1 Planning

As early as 1927, before the area had an airport, Dallasproposed a joint airport with Fort Worth. Fort Worthdeclined the offer, and thus the two cities opened theirown airports, Love Field andMeacham Field, which eachhad scheduled airline service.

In 1940 the Civil Aeronautics Administration earmarked$1.9 million for the construction of a Dallas/Fort WorthRegional Airport. American Airlines and Braniff Air-ways struck a deal with the city of Arlington to buildan airport there, but the governments of Dallas and FortWorth disagreed over its construction and the project wasabandoned in 1942. In 1960 Fort Worth purchased AmonCarter Field and renamed it Greater Southwest Interna-tional Airport GSW in an attempt to compete with Dallasairport, but GSWs traffic continued to decline relative toDallas Love Field. By themid-1960s FortWorth was get-ting 1% of Texas air traffic while Dallas was getting 49%,which led to the virtual abandonment of GSW.The joint airport proposal was revisited in 1961 afterthe FAA refused to invest more money in separate Dal-las and Fort Worth airports. 1.2 Opening and operations

DFW held an open house and dedication ceremony onSeptember 2023, 1973, which included the first land-ing of a supersonic Concorde in the United States, anAir France aircraft en route from Caracas to Paris.[11]The attendees at the airports dedication included formerTexas Governor John Connally, Transportation SecretaryClaude Brinegar, U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen and TexasGovernor Dolph Briscoe.[14] The airport opened for com-mercial service asDallas/FortWorth Regional Airporton January 13, 1974, at a cost of $700 million. The namechange to Dallas/Fort Worth International did not occuruntil 1985.At the time of its opening, DFW had four terminals, numbered 2W, 2E, 3E and 4E.[12] During its first yearof operations, the airport was served by American Air-lines, Braniff International Airways, Continental Air-lines, Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, Frontier Air-lines, Ozark Air Lines, Rio Airways and Texas Inter-national Airlines.[15] The Wright Amendment of 1979banned long-distance flights from Love Field,[16] leavingSouthwest Airlines as Love Fields only jet carrier.[17]

Illustration of plans for the airport

Braniff International Airways was a major operator atDFW in the airports early years, operating a hub fromTerminal 2W with international flights to South Amer-ica and Mexico from 1974, London from 1978 and Eu-rope and Asia from 1979, before ceasing all operationsin 1982.[18] During the Braniff hub era, DFW was oneof only four U.S. airports to have scheduled Concordeservice; Braniff commenced scheduled Concorde servicefrom Dallas to Washington from 1979 to 1980, usingBritish Airways and Air France aircraft temporarily re-registered to Braniff while flying within the United States.British Airways later briefly flew Concorde to Dallas in1988 as a substitute for its ordinarily scheduled DC-10service.[11]

Following airline deregulation, American Airlines, whichhad already been one of the largest carriers serving theDallas/Fort Worth area for many years, established itsfirst hub at DFW on June 11, 1981.[19] American fin-ished moving its headquarters from Grand Prairie, Texas

to a building in Fort Worth located near DFW Airporton January 17, 1983; the airline began leasing the facilityfrom the airport, which owns the facility.[20] By 1984, theAmerican hub occupied most of Terminal 3E and part ofTerminal 2E.[21] Americans hub grew to fill all of Ter-minal 2E by 1991.[22] American also began long-haul in-ternational service from DFW, adding flights to Londonin 1982 and Tokyo in 1987.[23]

Delta Air Lines also built up a hub operation at DFW,which occupied most of Terminal 4E through the1990s.[21][22] The Delta hub peaked around 1991, whenDelta had a 35% market share at DFW; its share washalved by 2004, with many former mainline routes down-graded to more frequent regional jet service in 2003.[24]Delta finally closed its DFW hub in 2004 in a restructur-ing of the airline to avoid bankruptcy, cutting its DFWoperation to only 21 flights a day from over 250, and re-deploying aircraft to hubs in Cincinnati, Atlanta and SaltLake City. Prior to the closure, Delta had a 17.3% mar-ket share at DFW.[25] After the closing of Deltas hub,DFW offered incentives to Southwest Airlines to relocateits service to DFW from Love Field, but Southwest, as inthe past, chose to stay at Love Field.

In 1989 the airport authority announced plans to rebuildthe existing terminals and add two runways. After an en-vironmental impact study was released the following year, the cities of Irving, Euless, and Grapevine sued the air-port over its extension plans, a battle that was finally de-cided (in favor of the airport) by the US Supreme Courtin 1994. The seventh runway opened in 1996. The 4primary North-South runways (those closest to the ter-minals) were all lengthened from 11,388 feet (3,471 m)to their present length of 13,400 feet (4,084m). The first,17R/35L, was extended in 1996 (at the same time the newrunway was constructed), and the other three (17C/35C,18L/36R, and 18R/36L) were extended in 2005. DFW isnow the only airport in the world with 4 serviceable pavedrunways longer than 4,000 metres (13,123 ft).Terminal D, built for international flights, and Skylink,a modern bidirectional people mover system, opened in2005.[26][27]

From 2004 to 2012, DFW was one of two US ArmyPersonnel Assistance Points which received US troopsreturning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for restand recuperation. This ended on March 14, 2012 andHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport becamethe sole Personnel Assistance Point.[28]

    2 Terminals

A terminal map of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport

A passenger footbridge at terminal D.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport has fiveterminals totaling 165 gates.[29] The airport is designedwith expansion in mind, and can theoretically accom-modate up to thirteen terminals totaling 260 gates, although this level of expansion is unlikely to be reachedin the foreseeable future. The initial four terminalswere designed by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum andBrodsky, Hopf & Adler.[30]

The terminals at DFW are semicircular (except for thenewest terminal, Terminal D, which is a square Ushape) and built around the airports central north-southarterial road, Spur 97, also known as International Park-way. Until the late 1990s, they were designated by anumber (2 being northernmost, 4 being southernmost)and a letter suffix (E for East, W for West). Thissystem was later scrapped, and the terminals are now let-tered from A to E. Terminals A, C, and E (from north tosouth) are on the east side of the airport, while TerminalsB and D (from north to south) are on the west side.

DFWs terminals are designed to minimize the distancebetween a passengers car and airplane as well as reducetraffic around terminals. A consequence of this layoutis that connecting passengers had to walk extremely longdistances between gates (in order to walk from one endof the semicircular concourse to the other, one must walkthe entire length; there were no shortcuts between theends). The original people mover train (Airtrans APM,later the American Airlines TrAAin) which opened withthe airport was notoriously slow (17mph (27 km/h)), uni-directional (running only in a counter-clockwise direc-tion), and was located outside the secured area (thus re-quiring travelers to go through the security process again). It was replaced by SkyLink in April 2005 after servingapproximately 250 million passengers.[31] Skylink servesall five terminals at a considerably higher speed (up to 35mph (56 km/h)), is bi-directional, and is located insidethe secured area.[27]

DFW Airport is undergoing a $2.7 billion[32] TerminalRenewal and Improvement Program (TRIP), which en-compasses renovations of the original four terminals (A,B, C and E). Work on the project began following theconclusion of Super Bowl XLV in February 2011. Ter-minal A was the first terminal to undergo these renova-tions. Gates A6-A16 were completed in April 2013, thewhole terminal should be completed sometime in 2015,and the entire TRIP project should be complete by theend of 2018.[33]

The airport has completed a US $2.8 million renovationof Terminal D to accommodate the double-deck AirbusA380.[34][35]

minal A operated most of AAs international flights at theairport. During the late 1990s, many American Eagleflights began moving to Terminal B. Before Terminal Dwas opened, American Eagle flights also used a satelliteterminal (named Satellite Terminal A2) near Terminal Adue to gate restraints. Passengers were taken to the satel-lite via shuttle buses from gate A6. Satellite Terminal A2(Gates A2AA2N) was abandoned in 2005 when Amer-ican Eagle moved all flights to Terminals B and D.Terminal A and its parking garage has been undergoingrenovation, in phases, with two of the three phases nowcomplete. An American Airlines Admirals Club is located at GateA24.Terminal A has 31 gates: A8A26, A28A29, A33A39.

    2.2 Terminal B

This terminal was originally called Terminal 2W whenthe airport first opened. It was formerly occupied byBraniff International Airways which was the largest car-rier to open DFW in 1974. Braniff Airways was its mainoccupant until May 1982. An Inter-Faith Chapel nearUniteds former gates commemorates the airline. Amer-ican Eagle occupies all gates at Terminal B. AirTran Air-ways, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Airlines and US Air-ways (including the former America West Airlines) re-located to Terminal E in 2006. On December 13, 2009,United moved to Terminal E to join its new Alliance (andlater Merger) partner Continental. At that point Amer-ican Eagle became the sole operator in Terminal B. Priorto the opening of Terminal D, all foreign flag carriers op-erated from this terminal.Along with the TRIP improvements, a new 10-gatestinger concourse off of Terminal B was constructed be-tween gates B28 and B33 to accommodate growth.[36]

An American Airlines Admirals Club is located at GateB5.Terminal B has 49 gates: B1-B3 (FIS optional), B4-B29,B30-B39 (North Stinger), B40-B49.

    2.3 Terminal C

American Airlines operates all the gates at TerminalC, originally called Terminal 3E, for only domesticflights. A Hyatt Regency hotel is directly adjacent to thisterminal.[37] A twin hotel building formerly stood acrossInternational Parkway, but was demolished for the con-struction of Terminal D.[38]

An American Airlines Admirals Club is located at GateC20.Terminal C has 31 gates: C2C4, C6C8, C10C12,

International Terminal D and the Grand Hyatt DFW Hotel

International Terminal D is a 2,000,000 sq ft (186,000m2) facility capable of handling 32,000 passengers dailyor 11.7 million passengers annually. The terminal fea-tures 200 ticketing positions and a federal inspection fa-cility capable of processing 2,800 passengers per hour. The concession areas consist of 100,000 sq ft (9,290m2) of retail, including many dining and retail options.Stores include Mont Blanc, La Bodega Wines, Brook-stone, L'Occitane and many others. The terminal wasdesigned by HKS, HNTB and Corgan Associates, withAustin Commercial serving as Construction Manager atRisk, L.A. Fuess Partners, Campbell and Associates, andWalter P. Moore serving as structural engineers, andFriberg Associates, Inc., Carter/Burgess, LopezGarciaGroup, and DFW Consulting Group serving as mechan-ical electrical and plumbing engineers.[39] It officiallyopened on July 23, 2005.[40]

The 298-room Grand Hyatt DFW Hotel is directly con-nected to the terminal. Under the Airport Access Au-thorization to Commercial Establishments Beyond theScreen Checkpoint (AAACE) program, overnight guestsat the hotel who are not flying can obtain a pass to en-ter the concourses to visit shops and restaurants, subjectto screening by a law enforcement officer and an iden-tity check against the governments no-fly list. DetroitMetropolitanWayne County Airport is the only other air-port participating in this program.[41]

The eight-level parking garage has over 8,100 parkingspaces and uses a Smart Technology System that letsguests know which floors are full. Air-conditioned sky-bridges with moving walkways and elevators connect thegarage to the terminal, and an arrivals canopy roof shieldspedestrians from inclement weather as they enter and exitthe terminal. On April 3, 2014 DFW Airport director Sean Donohueannounced that Emirates Airlines would upgrade theirservice from the Boeing 777-200LR to the Airbus A380from October 1, 2014.[42][43] OnMay 7, 2014 Qantas an-nounced an upgrade to A380 service beginning Septem-ber 29, 2014,[44] and the airport press agency announced

Terminal E, originally called Terminal 4E, was occupiedprimarily by Delta Air Lines until Delta closed its hub in2005 and retained only flights to its other hubs. Deltabranded the terminal Easy Street and marketed thisterm to passengers.[48] Today the terminal is used by allU.S.-based carriers at the airport other than Americanand Sun Country as well as Air Canada Express andWestjet Pre-Custom Clearance flights from Canada. It had customs facilities that were used when Delta op-erated flights to Frankfurt in the early 1990s, and whenAir France and Aeromxico used to serve DFW beforethe International Terminal D was constructed. In the2000s, SkyTeam partner airlines Continental and North-west moved to gates adjacent to Delta.Terminal E is distinctive in that it has a satellite termi-nal connected by an underground walkway. The satellite, previously used by Delta and later used by Delta Connec-

tion carriers, was closed when Delta closed their DFWhub in 2005. It was briefly used in 2009 to house federalworkers who evacuated New Orleans International Air-port during Hurricane Gustav, and was refurbished andreopened in 2013 to house US Airways and Spirit Air-lines while Terminal E was renovated.[49][50] Terminal Eis connected to the other terminals by SkyLink, but lacksa walkway to the other terminals.ADelta SkyClub is located at Gate E10 and aUnitedClubis located at Gate E7.Terminal E has 35 gates: E2, E4-E18, E20-E21, E22-E30 (Satellite Terminal), E31-E38.

    6.1 Within airport

The current people mover system, named Skylink, opened on May 21, 2005 and is the worlds largesthigh-speed airport train system. Totally automated,Skylink trains run every two minutes,[65] and travelat speeds up to 35 mph (56 km/h). Skylinkis double-tracked, permitting bi-directional oper-ations. The Skylink system was acquired fromBombardier Transportation and connects all termi-nals on the secure side.

Skylink replaced the original Airtrans system(part of which was later operated as Ameri-can Airlines TrAAin System), a state-of-the-art people mover at the time of the airportsopening. It served the airport for 31 yearsfrom 19742005 and transported a quarter ofa billion passengers between DFWs four ter-minals and employee facilities, logging a to-tal of 97,000,000 miles (156,000,000 km) onits fleet. Over time, its top speed of 17 mph(27 km/h) and uni-directional guideway madeit impractical for connecting passenger trans-fers. The systemwas decommissioned soon af-ter Skylink opened as a modern replacement;the old guideways were left in place through-out the airport.[31]

Terminal Link connects all terminals with a shuttlebus system on the non-secure side.[66]

A consolidated rental car facility is located at thesouth end of the airport and connected to all ter-minals by a dedicated network of shuttle buses.[67]Hosting ten rental car companies, the center wascompleted in March 2000.[68]

Dallas Area Rapid Transit offers bus service toDowntown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station andSouthwestern Medical District/Parkland Station onroute 408 from the Remote South Parking facility. As well, route 500 connects Terminal A directlywith CentrePort/DFW Airport Station to the south, and the current Orange Line terminus of Belt LineStation to the east.

On August 18, 2014[69] DART opened DFW Air-port Station located between Terminals A and B.This provides direct rail service on the Orange Lineto Dallas and Las Colinas (with a later extension toDFW North Station). These stations will becomemajor stations for the future Tarrant Express Railunder development by the Fort Worth Transporta-tion Authority and DARTs Cotton Belt Rail Line.

    6.3 Nearby highways

The DFW Airport Area is served by the InternationalParkway (partially State Highway 97 Spur), which runsthrough the center of the airport, connecting to theAirport Freeway (State Highway 183) on the southernside of the airport and the John W. Carpenter Freeway(State Highway 114). The International Parkway contin-ues north of State Highway 114 carrying the State High-way 121 designation for a short while until its interchangewith the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway (I-635), where StateHighway 121 continues north as the Sam Rayburn Toll-way. IH 35 E is easily accessible by going north on theInternational Parkway.

    7 Founders Plaza

In 1995 the airport opened Founders Plaza, an obser-vation park dedicated to the founders of DFW Airport. The site offered a panoramic view on the south end ofthe airport and hosted several significant events includingan employee memorial the day after the September 11,2001, terrorist attacks and the airports 30th anniversarycelebration in 2004.[70] As part of the perimeter taxiwayproject, Founders Plaza was closed in 2007 and movedto a new location surrounding a 50-foot (15 m)-tall bea-con on the north side of the airport in 2008. The 6-acre(2.4 ha) plaza features a granite monument and sculp-ture, post-mounted binoculars, piped-in voices of air traf-fic controllers and shade pavilions. In 2010 a memorialhonoring Delta Air Lines Flight 191 was dedicated at theplaza.[71]

    9 Incidents and accidents

    9.1 Airport operations

The following occurred at the airfield itself, immediatelyafter takeoff, during the final landing approach, and/orduring an attempted go-around:

August 2, 1985: Delta Air Lines Flight 191, aLockheed L-1011 on a Fort LauderdaleDallas/FortWorthLos Angeles route, crashed on the northend of runway 17R after encountering a severemicroburst on final approach; the crash killed 8 of11 crew members, 128 of 152 passengers on board, and one person on the ground.

March 24, 1987: The pilot of a Metroflight ConvairCV-580, registration number N73107, operatingfor American Eagle Airlines on a commuter flightbound for Longview, Texas, lost directional controlduring a crosswind takeoff. The left-hand wing andpropeller struck the runway and the nose landinggear collapsed as the craft slid off the runway andonto an adjacent taxiway; 8 passengers and 3 crewaboard the airliner suffered minor or no injuries. The crash was attributed to the pilots decision todisregard wind information and take off in weatherconditions that exceeded the rated capabilities of theaircraft; the pilots overconfidence in [his/her] per-

sonal ability was cited as a contributing factor inthe accident report.[78][79]

May 21, 1988: An American Airlines McDonnellDouglas DC-10-30, registration number N136AA,operating as AA Flight 70 bound for Frankfurt, overran Runway 35L after automatic warning sig-nals prompted the flight crew to attempt a rejectedtakeoff; the jetliner continued to accelerate for sev-eral seconds before slowing, and did not stop un-til it had run 1,100 feet (335 m) past the runwaythreshold, collapsing the nose landing gear. 2 crewwere seriously injured and the remaining 12 crewand 240 passengers escaped safely; the aircraft wasseverely damaged and was written off. Investigatorsattributed the overrun to a shortcoming in the designstandards that were used when the DC-10 was built;there had been no requirement to test whether par-tially worn (as opposed to brand-new) brake padswere capable of stopping the aircraft during a re-jected takeoff, and 8 of the 10 worn pad sets onN136AA had failed.[80][81]

August 31, 1988: Delta Air Lines Flight 1141, aBoeing 727 bound to Salt Lake City InternationalAirport in Salt Lake City, Utah, crashed after take-off from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, killing 2 of 7crew members, and 12 of 101 passengers on board.

April 14, 1993: The pilot of American AirlinesFlight 102, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, reg-istration number N139AA, lost directional controlduring a crosswind landing in rainy conditions andcaused the jetliner to slide off Runway 17L after ar-riving from Honolulu, Hawaii. The craft dug intodeep mud alongside the runway, collapsing the noselanding gear and tearing off the left-hand engineand much of the left wing. A fire in the left-handwheel well was rapidly extinguished by firefighterswho arrived almost immediately from the nearbyDFW/DPS Fire Station. 2 passengers suffered seri-ous injuries while using the evacuation slides to es-cape from the steeply tilted fuselage; the remaining187 passengers and all 13 crew evacuated in relativesafety, but the aircraft was a total loss.[82][83][84]

May 23, 2001: The right main landing gear of anAmerican Airlines Fokker 100, registration numberN1419D, operating as AA Flight 1107, collapsedupon landing on Runway 17C after a scheduledflight from Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. The pilot was able to maintain directional controland bring the aircraft to a stop on the runway. Theincident was attributed to metal fatigue caused bya manufacturing flaw in the right main gears outercylinder; there were no serious injuries to the 88passengers or 4 crew, but the aircraft was writtenoff.[85][86]

9.2 Flights departing from or bound forDallas/Fort Worth International Air-port

The following did not occur near the airfield itself but in-volved flights originating from or bound for DFW Inter-national Airport:

June 2, 1983: Air Canada Flight 797, whichwas flying on a Dallas/Fort WorthTorontoMontreal route, made an emergency landing atCincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Air-port in Kentucky; 23 of the 46 people on boardwere killed by either smoke inhalation or flash fire.

June 1, 1999: American Airlines Flight 1420crashed upon landing at Little Rock National Air-port at Little Rock, Arkansas on a flight from Dal-las/Fort Worth, killing the captain and 10 of the 139passengers.
