INTRODUCTION

1. Dakshina Kannada (South Canara) is the southern coastal district of Karnataka State with an area of 4859

Sq.K.M. The district is bound by sea in the west and Western Ghats in the East, Udupi district in the North and

Kerala State in the South.

2. Mangaluru is the district head quarters of Dakshina Kannada and it has become an education hub with a

number of reputed institutions offering variety of courses attracting students from all over the country and

abroad. It is also famous for its beaches, temples and religious places of worship.

3. Daksina Kannada is known as ‘The Cradle of Indian Banking’ and has the only fertilizer manufacturing unit

in the state. Headquartered around Mangaluru (Mangalore) City, Dakshina Kannada is a popular destination

for the cultivation of areca nut, coconut, cashew and paddy. Major food crops grown here include black gram,

green gram, sugarcane, cocoa, pepper and vanilla. Dakshina Kannada is one of the most industrialized districts

in the state. The district offers excellent projects under the Chemicals and Petrochemical sector. A dedicated

Petrochemical SEZ and an oil refinery are in the pipeline. The district also has access to the New Mangaluru

(Mangalore) port which is the ninth major port in India.

STRENGTHS OF DAKSHINA KANNADA DISRICT

1. Dakshina Kannada district is the second major district of Karnataka.

2. Mangalore is the second largest city of Karnataka.

3. The district has five national highways connecting parts of Karnataka and India.

4. Dakshina Karnataka has a seaport at Panambur

named New Mangalore port. The seaport is one of the major seaports of India.

5. The district is connected by air through the Mangalore international Airport at Bajpe.

6. The Dakshina Kannada along with Udupi district known as “The cradle of Indian banking”. Major

nationalized banks of India such as Canara Bank, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, Vijaya Bank and

Private sector Karnataka Bank evolved from these two districts.

7. Red clay tiles (Mangalore Tiles), Cashew processing factories are flourishing in the district.

8. Dakshina Kannada per capita income of Rs:2,18,580/- which is second only to Bangalore district.

9. Dakshina Kannada second largest contributor to the state GSDP (5.8%).

10. Availability of numerous rivers, streams and other water bodies with perennial flow of water in the

region.

11. Favorable climate for areca nut, paddy, cocoa , coconut, cashew cultivation.

12. One of the major Marine production centres and exports

13. Dakshina Kannada has the only fertilizer manufacturing unit in the state. District known as “State

Fertilizer Hub”.

14. The district has exports of Cashew ,marine, processed foods, engineering, plastic components , Plastic

packaging products like FIBC bags etc.

15. District has well organized cooperative set ups. The Campco is one of the shining example of processing

of Cocoa and other produce from farmers under cooperative set up.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESOURCES OF DAKSHINA KANNADA

1. Land – Dakshina Kannada has a 21.32% forest covering including the dense evergreen forest of the

Western Ghats. It has 34.17% of uncultivated land and 24.94% of remaining available land. Land

Bank Area: 429.8 acres.

2. Water – Dakshina Kannada has four major rivers – Nethravathi, Gurupura, Payaswini and

Kumaradhara. Extensive irrigation systems using ground water and water from the reservoirs and

canals aid in the irrigating the land.

3. Power – power supply transmission is done by Mangaluru (Mangalore) Electricity Supply Company

Ltd. average annual consumption of power in the district for industries is 19.13 MU and domestic usage

is 594.51 MU.

4. Human Resources – Dakshina Kannada is home to leading educational Institutions like the National

Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka Krishi Vignana Kendra, Mangalure (Mangalore)

University. National Research Centre for cashew and college of fisheries for agro-related

education/training.

5. Natural Resources – Dakshina Kannada has natural resources like silica sand, bauxite, lime shell,

ornamental stone, building stone and ordinary clay.

6. Connectivity – Access to three international airports and one domestic airport connects Dakshina

Kannada to all the major cities. Three national highways, NH17, NH48 and NH13 provide road

connectivity, and a 227 km railway line across eight railway stations connects the district to all major

cities in India. The district also has access to the infrastructure at the New Mangaluru (Mangalore)

Port.

Some of the suggestions received for boosting exports:

Consultations with Stakeholders like Chamber of Commerce, CII etc were held. Some of the following

suggestions were received:

1. In the district marine export is an ODOP. This should be promoted.

2. Setting up of testing lab related to fisheries which can be housed in the Fisheries College in the

district. Now it takes about 6 days to send to cochin and get it for the same.

3. Setting up of Honey testing lab (This district along with other districts of Uttara Kannada, Coorg

together hold great potential for Honey processing and exports. The testing lab will facilitate it).

4. Provision of industrial sites to the industries.

5. Existing SEZ set up in the district can work more towards booking export potential in the district.

6. Improving the Port connectivity.

7. Setting up of common facility centers for the Cashew Industry to boost competitiveness and

exports.

Industry Profile of Dakshina Kannada

1. 23 Large and Medium Scale Industries with an aggregated investment of INR 9.216

crores.

2. 15324 small scale industries with an aggregated investment of INR 770 crores.

3. 714 factories in the district, with an employment of 42,876 people.

4. With a high presence of MSMEs, 2016-17 saw the registration of 940 units, with

employment of 6,072 people.

5. Petrochemicals

i. Dedicated Petrochemical SEZ with a proposed area of 3,985 acres.

ii. Proposed oil refinery project with an investment of INR 8,640 crores by MRPRL

Ltd.

iii. Proposed 455 kms gas pipeline through Chennai-Bengaluru-Mangaluru by

Reliance with an investment of INR 6,768 crores

6. Information Technology:

i. Rise in the presence of IT companies.

ii. 2 operational, 2 notified and 1 formally approved IT SEZ.

iii. Proposed to have 40% area for IT workforce.

i. One of the biggest fishing centres with one minor fishing harbor.

ii. Marine fish production of 90,000 MT; inland fish production of 1,065 MT.

8. Other focus sectors:

i. Known as the cradle of India banking and one of the most industrialized districts.

ii. Automobile : 1000 acres of land identified for manufacturing of automobiles.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS

1. Resolve local problems of exporting community:

Conducting Export Awareness Programmes, Seminars and training regularly to the export units, Clusters in the district is very necessary on regular base.

2. Creation of subgroups for each identified potential export products involving stake holders like manufacturers, artisans, exporters of the identifiable products.

3. Resolution, escalation and monitoring of issues in exports from the district identified products through regular meeting. A regular meeting will be conducted along with exporters , DLEPC members.

4. Identifying training and development need of district industries and coordination of training with other departments---Continuous training and hand holding fior aspiring exporters may be given for producing value added products, marketing, labeling and packaging, Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures, Quality issues.

5. Dissemination of information through training, seminars, guest lectures, practical traning, exchange visits with other districts of excellence.

6. DLEPC - Act as one-point facilitator for export promotion at district level. 7. Regular meetings with DGFT, GST and Custom authorities to resolve the issues which

are bothering exporters. As per feedback received during meeting, even staff is not sufficiently competent, suggesting a Need for training.
