President's message Recently my dog Bo died and I lost a great companion. He gave me unforgiving love and affection at a time after my wife passed that I needed it. I could fill a book of stories of Bo and I but remembered this instead. In 1981 the great movie actor Jimmy Stewart's dog Beau died. Stewart stopped production on the movie he was working and flew home to be with Beau to the end. I found it interesting that some-one so rich and famous could love his dog like I loved mine. SIOUX FALLS JAMES O. APLAN CLASSIC GUN SHOW

UPDATE Hi DTGCA members, I just wanted to let you know the results of our first James O. Aplan Classic Gun Show held on the new dates of October 26 and 27 in Sioux Falls, SD. We had every table filled with vendors from Montana, Colora-do, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Ne-braska, Kansas and I probably missed a few other states. The Saturday was slow as far as attendance. I think the primary reason for this was the rival football game between North Da-kota and South Dakota that was held in Brookings, SD just 45 minutes north of Sioux Falls. Sunday made up for the attend-ance. We had twice as many patrons on Sunday as we had on Saturday. Nearly 1000 people attended this first gun show in October in Sioux Falls. I saw many guns go out the door. I’m still waiting for a couple bills to come in, but I can say this show made a profit. We are working on the contract for next October. We MAY be able to expand into the adja-cent room if we have enough interest from our dealers and if the rental cost is not too high. If you are interested in having tables at next year’s show, let me know so I can get you on the waiting list. Rob Moore Show Manager

THE DEMISE OF A GUN SHOW Nothing is worse than hearing the discharge of a firearm in the facility of a gun show event. Complete si-lence, awestruck expressions, the sound of the “pin” dropping. Accident they say, well of course it was an accident but a preventable accident. A foolish action, whereas the word foolish is not a strong enough adjective, let’s try irresponsible. Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Association, Inc. has adopted a “zero tolerance” to any Discharge of a fire arm, accidental or otherwise; therefore a few loyal members have had their privilege of being a table renter revoked because of this irre-sponsible action. One sure way to see the “demise” of a gun show is from the discharge of a fire arm. Facilities will think twice when contracting gun shows, insurance premiums will sky rocket, attendance will dwindle from the negative coverage stemming from such action. Please, please exercise extreme caution with all arms, whether displayed on your table or brought in from the public. When showing your fire arm to a guest:

A) snip the gun tie B) treat the fire arm as if it were loaded

C) check before handing it to your guest for him to examine D) retie the firearm.

E) the same process would apply when inspecting a fire arm from the public

Never under estimate if your fire arm is loaded or not, treat it as being loaded and check, check, check.

WORLD WAR II SHIN GUARDS Owner Terry Ennen Menoken, ND

From the Internet Shin guards have come a long way. The earliest records of shin guards date back to ancient Greece. Com-monly made from bronze, they were designed exclusively for soldiers fighting in battle.

Terry Ennen displayed the World War II Leather Shin Guards at the Bismarck, ND gun show in September.

AFGAN JEZAIL?

Owner Duane Wallin Owatonna, MN I have enclosed pictures of a rifle I recently purchased. I believe the gun is from Afghanistan. (editor’s note, when examining the pictures to what is on the Internet, is this a Jezail?) The gun is dated 1811 and over 5 feet long. The hundreds of inlays go all the way to the muzzle. RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET Picture and statement Jezails were generally handmade weapons, and consequently they widely varied in their construction. Jezails were seen as very personal weapons, and unlike the typical military weapons of the time which were very plain and utilitarian, Jezails tended to be well crafted and were usually intricately decorated.

45-70 120 SHARPS CONVERSION Owner Dan Mueller Keystone, SD

Sharps 45-70 120 Conversion Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore single-shot rifles. They were renowned for long-range accuracy. By 1874 the rifle was available in a variety of calibers, and had been adopted by the armies of a number of na-tions. It was one of the few designs to successfully transition to metallic cartridge use. The Sharps rifles be-

came icons of the American Old West due to their appearances in many Western-genre movies and books.

The firearm displayed is 16 pounds to hunt buffalo. The paperwork displayed with the Sharps had the name Wal-

ter Cooper, Bozeman, MT.

REMINGTON 700 ADL CARBINE owner Eric Bailey Bismarck, ND

The collection of the Re-mington 700 ADL Car-bine bolt actions were on display at the Bis-marck 2019 Fall show. Eric stated he is only missing the 280 caliber to complete the collec-tion. These arms were only made in 1962-63.

Just a little story to go along with this article. I (Vicki) was traveling to the Pierre, SD gun show this lovely Friday morning. It has to be 10 -15 years ago. Turned down Hwy 83 and the further South I went the bluer the sky was but the ground blizzard was terrible. Finally made it to Selby 88 miles North of Pierre, came upon this motel and pulled in. Here Darrel and Audrey were right behind me, so we all stayed that night in Selby and traveled to Pierre the next morning. Had a nice visit with the Spencer's and to this day we still reminisce about the ground blizzard on our way to the Pierre show.
