Daily Prayer in Honduras August 3-10, 2019 EL HOGAR IS A HOME AND SCHOOL FOR ABANDONED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE, and it is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras. EL HOGAR IS A HOME AND SCHOOL FOR ABANDONED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE, and it is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras. AreadingfromHosea,chapter11,verses1-11

WhenIsraelwasachild,I lovedhim,andoutofEgyptIcalledmyson. ThemoreIcalledthem,themoretheywentfromme;theykeptsacrificingtotheBaals,andofferingincensetoidols.YetitwasIwhotaughtEphraimtowalk,Itookthemupinmyarms;buttheydidnotknowthatIhealedthem.Iledthemwithcordsofhumankindness,withbandsoflove.Iwastothemlikethosewholiftinfantstotheircheeks.Ibentdowntothemandfedthem.

Theyshall returnto the landofEgypt,andAssyriashallbe theirking,because theyhaverefusedtoreturntome. Theswordragesintheircities, itconsumestheiroracle-priests,anddevoursbecauseoftheirschemes. Mypeoplearebentonturningawayfromme.TotheMostHightheycall,buthedoesnotraisethemupatall.

HowcanIgiveyouup,Ephraim?HowcanIhandyouover,OIsrael?HowcanImakeyoulikeAdmah?HowcanItreatyoulikeZeboiim?Myheartrecoilswithinme;mycompassiongrows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroyEphraim; for IamGodandnomortal, theHolyOne inyourmidst,andIwillnotcomeinwrath.

TheyshallgoaftertheLord,whoroarslikealion;whenheroars,hischildrenshallcometremblingfromthewest.TheyshallcometremblinglikebirdsfromEgypt,andlikedovesfromthelandofAssyria;andIwillreturnthemtotheirhomes,saystheLord.

AreadingfromalettertotheColossians,chapter3,verses1-11

IfyouhavebeenraisedwithChrist,seekthethingsthatareabove,whereChristis,seatedattherighthandofGod.Setyourmindsonthingsthatareabove,notonthingsthatareonearth,foryouhavedied,andyourlifeishiddenwithChristinGod.WhenChristwhoisyourlifeisrevealed,thenyoualsowillberevealedwithhiminglory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evildesire, andgreed (which is idolatry).Onaccountof these thewrathofGod is comingonthosewho are disobedient. These are theways you also once followed,when youwerelivingthatlife.Butnowyoumustgetridofallsuchthings–anger,wrath,malice,slander,and abusive language from yourmouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you havestrippedoff theoldselfwith itspracticesandhaveclothedyourselveswith thenewself,whichisbeingrenewedinknowledgeaccordingtotheimageofitscreator.Inthatrenewalthere is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian,slaveandfree;butChristisallandinall!

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the familyinheritancewithme.”Buthesaid tohim,“Friend,whosetmetobea judgeorarbitratoroveryou?”Andhesaidtothem,“Takecare!Beonyourguardagainstallkindsofgreed;forone’slifedoesnotconsistintheabundanceofpossessions.”Thenhetoldthemaparable:"Thelandofarichmanproducedabundantly.Andhethoughttohimself,‘WhatshouldIdo,for I havenoplace to storemy crops?’ Thenhe said, ‘Iwill do this: Iwill pull downmybarnsandbuildlargerones,andthereIwillstoreallmygrainandmygoods.AndIwillsaytomysoul,‘Soul,youhaveamplegoodslaidupformanyyears;relax,eat,drink,bemerry.’ButGodsaidtohim,‘Youfool!Thisverynightyourlifeisbeingdemandedofyou.Andthethingsyouhaveprepared,whosewilltheybe?’SoitiswiththosewhostoreuptreasuresforthemselvesbutarenotrichtowardGod.”

TuesdayAugust6Psalm78:1-8,37-391 Listen,mypeople,tomyteaching;tiltyourearstowardthewordsofmymouth.2 Iwillopenmymouthwithaproverb.I’lldeclareriddlesfromdayslonggone—3 onesthatwehaveheardandlearnedabout,onesthatourancestorstoldus.4 Wewillnothidethemfromtheirdescendants;wewilltellthenextgeneration allaboutthepraiseduetheLORDandhisstrength—thewondrousworksGodhasdone.5 HeestablishedalawforJacobandsetupinstructionforIsrael, orderingourancestorstoteachthemtotheirchildren.6 Thisissothatthenextgenerationandchildrennotyetbornwillknowthesethings, andsotheycanriseupandtelltheirchildren7 toputtheirhopeinGod—neverforgettingGod’sdeeds, butkeepingGod’scommandments—8 andsothattheywillnotbecomeliketheirancestors:arebellious,stubborngeneration, agenerationwhoseheartwasnotsetfirmandwhosespiritwasnotfaithfultoGod.37 Theirheartswerenotfirmlysetonhim;theywerenotfaithfultohiscovenant.38 ButGod,beingcompassionate,keptforgivingtheirsins,keptavoidingdestruction; hetookbackhisangersomanytimes,wouldnotstirupallhiswrath!39 Godkeptrememberingthattheywerejustflesh,

justbreaththatpassesanddoesnotcomeback.Mark8:27-3327JesusandhisdiscipleswentintothevillagesnearCaesareaPhilippi.Onthewayheaskedhisdisciples,“WhodopeoplesaythatIam?”28They told him, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of theprophets.” 29Heaskedthem,“Andwhataboutyou?WhodoyousaythatIam?”

Peteranswered,“YouaretheChrist.”30Jesusorderedthemnottotellanyoneabouthim. 31ThenJesusbegantoteachhisdisciples:“TheHumanOnemustsuffermanythingsandberejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, afterthree days, rise from the dead.” 32He said this plainly. But Peter took hold of Jesus and,scoldinghim,begantocorrecthim.33Jesusturnedandlookedathisdisciples,thensternlycorrected Peter: “Get behindme, Satan. Maketheworkofourhandslast!Mark9:30-3730Jesus and his followerswent through Galilee, but he did notwant anyone to know it.31Thiswasbecausehewasteachinghisdisciples,“TheHumanOnewillbedeliveredintohumanhands.Theywillkillhim.Threedaysafterheiskilledhewillriseup.”32Buttheydidnotunderstandthiskindoftalk,andtheywereafraidtoaskhim.33TheyenteredCapernaum.Whentheyhadcomeintoahouse,heaskedthem,“Whatwereyouarguingaboutduringthejourney?”34Theydidnotrespond,sinceonthewaytheyhadbeen debating with each other about who was the greatest. 35He sat down, called theTwelve,andsaidtothem,“Whoeverwantstobefirstmustbeleastofallandtheservantofall.” 36Jesus reached for a little child, placed him among the Twelve, and embraced him.Thenhesaid,37“Whoeverwelcomesoneofthesechildreninmynamewelcomesme;andwhoever welcomesme is not actually welcomingme but rather the one who sent me.”

ForwhatamIespeciallygrateful?Wepraytogether:Lord,itisnight.Thenightisforstillness.LetusbestillinthepresenceofGod.Itisnightafteralongday.Whathasbeendonehasbeendone.Whathasnotbeendonehasnotbeendone.Letitbe.Thenightisdark. Letourfearsofthedarknessoftheworldandofourownlivesrestinyou.Thenightisquiet. Letthequietnessofyourpeaceenfoldus,alldeartous,andallwhohavenopeace.Thenightheraldsthedawn. Letuslookexpectantlytoanewday,newjoys,newpossibilities.Inyournamewepray.Amen.
