As we prepare for the Feast of St. Francis and the blessing of the animals on Saturday at 9am; I wanted to share with you a story of blessing animals from Wisconsin.
First Annual St. Francis of Assisi Blessing of the Animals during the National Novena to Our Lady of Good Help at
Champion Shrine
In the year that marks the 160th anniversary of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Champion WI, during the National Novena to Our Lady of Good Help, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help will hold the first annual, St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day Blessing of the Animals on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 at 3:15 PM (CDT) at the St. Francis Grotto at America's Marian Apparition Site in Champion, WI. Animals - domestic and farm - will be brought to the site for the blessing, with owners taking full responsibility for ensuring animal safety and people safety while on site. Leashes and pet carriers are preferred, and all animal owners are asked to be respectful of the space of others while on site. Genesis of the Event, Blessing of the Animals at Champion Shrine: Franciscan roots at Champion Shrine - Adele Brise, the founding visionary of Champion Shrine and seer to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the grounds at Champion in 1859, was, herself, a third order tertiary Franciscan and member of St. Francis religious order worldwide. The members of the order who worked with Adele at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help inspired catechesis in the community and, through their charitable works, created a peaceful environment where people could come pray in nature in the rural community of Robinsonville, now Champion, WI. (with Adele Brise having inspired the town name change from Robinsonville, to Champion, named after the village in Belgium near the place from which she emigrated.) Additionally, the order of nuns who operated the Shrine and carried on Adele's catechetical mission work during their more than 90-year-tenure tending to the needs of pilgrims at the Shrine, were the Sisters of St. Francis of Holy Cross. The sisters continue their mission work today off site on their retreat center near the Shrine in the Bay Settlement. There, hey continue to do the good work of Jesus as emulated by St. Francis, just as they did on site at Our Lady of Good Help shrine in Champion, where the Blessed Mother appeared. Franciscan roots run deep at Champion in the peaceful, natural, humble setting that continues to draw thousands here annually. During the Great Fire of 1871, when fire burned the entire area, the Shrine was spared and all those who had come to pray here with Adele Brise, many who brought their children and farm animals, were saved. Saturday at 9am we will have our blessing of the animals at the chapel. We look forward to seeing you there!
