Goodwill messageHow pleasant it is to hear a player call,

“Director, please” – instead of an anguished“DIRECTOR!”

Why not extend that courtesy to our caddies?Don’t you think “Caddy, please” has a rather nicesound?

Remember that Reno is the first NABC forsome of our players – and it’salso the first NABC for manyof our caddies.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

They meet at lastGeorge Rosenkranz and Malcolm Brachman

have known each other for more than 45 years, andthey have competed against each other countlesstimes. But they had never played together in a pairevent and they had never been on the same team.

That finally changed when they signed up asteammates in the first of the bracketed knockouts. Itwas a successful amalgamation – their team wonthe event.

It’s unlikely that any partnership with morecombined years will win an event here. Betweenthem Rosenkranz and Brachman count more than160 years.

Say CheeseAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+events with visible, real-time cameras. The imageswill be recorded and will be available for later offi-cial inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and par-ticipants’ behavior, ACBL has another source ofinformation that may be useful in determining factsand settling issues arising from some types of ethi-cal and behavioral complaints or actions.

This procedure is intended to assure everyonethat the playing field is level and that misbehaviorwill not be tolerated.

might have fared better, but certainly the ♠K is morethan reasonable. After some thought, Stiefel decided towin – he didn’t want a switch to diamonds. He finessedthe ♣Q successfully and went after trumps. He eyedWest’s ♥8 with suspicion as he played the 10 fromdummy and East ducked smoothly.

East is a good player, so Stiefel feared that West’s8 might have been singleton. If that was the case, Eastwould win the next trump trick with the queen, cashthe ace and lead a fourth heart. Now declarer wouldhave an extra loser in spades. So Stiefel decided to starton diamonds. He led low from dummy and won withhis jack when East played low. When he led anotherdiamond, West ruffed in with the queen and cashed the♠Q. Then came the ♠J, ruffed in dummy with the kingand overruffed by East.

East could have done better at this point by switch-ing to a club – it would have broken up the ensuing endposition. But he actually led his last trump. Stiefel care-fully won this with the 10 and then led the ♥7 to his 9.

Stiefel led his last trump – the 6 – and pitched dummy’s♦Q. He still had the ♦Aand two clubs in his hand and the♣A and the jack-small in clubs. And East had to discard. It was the perfect criss-cross squeeze. If East threw a dia-mond, Stiefel would cash the ♦A and cross to dummywith the ♣A for another diamond trick. If East ditched aclub, Stiefel would cross to the ♣A, get back to his handwith the ♦A and cash his good club.

Bizarre Triple Squeezeby Richard Pavlicek

This deal from the first round of the Vanderbiltcontained an unusual ending that I don’t recall see-ing before.

The opening lead was the ♠6.As East, I doubled the 1♣ opening for takeout,

and my son Rich rescued to 1♥ after the redouble.Eventually, Brian Senior of England becamedeclarer in 3NT.

It looks like nine easy tricks with the ♦A Konside, and it would be after a red-suit lead, butRich found the almost-killing spade lead, won bySouth’s king. The ♣A Q were cashed to discoverthe bad news (I pitched a spade), then South led aheart to develop his ninth trick. Suppose I win the♥A and return a spade, won in dummy. If declarerleads another heart, West takes the king and leads adiamond to my ace-king, then a third spade seversdeclarer’s communication. Whichever hand hewins in is left with a loser.

But wait! If declarer cashes one top club indummy (he can’t cash both because West still hasthe ♥K), I am caught in a bizarre triple squeeze, reminiscent of the late Geza Ottlik.

The ♣K is played from dummy. If I pitch myspade, I can’t lead a spade to break declarer’s com-munication. So I must let go of my long card in ared suit, and declarer pitches from the opposite redsuit. Next a heart is led to the king, and declarer cancope with any defense. If we cash both diamondsand lead a third spade, his hand is high thanks to thesqueeze.

Alas, we didn’t put declarer to the test — wetried to run diamonds after winning the heart. Sorry,Brian, for depriving you of the opportunity for therare squeeze, but I’m sure you would have gotten itright anyway.

The defenders didn’t do anything terribly wrongon this deal from the second final session of the SilidorOpen Pairs. They could have done better, but JohnStiefel found the route to a fine score when the defenseslipped a bit.

Bridge caddies help make the game so muchnicer, but many players inadvertently make acaddy’s job more difficult than it needs to be. Hereare some tips on how to be caddy-friendly:

• In pair games, make your completed score tick-ets easily accessible. Many caddies prefer tohave the score tickets placed in the corner ofthe table, while others like it left in the centerof the table sticking out partially from under-neath the table card. Even better is simply toask your caddy where he or she would like youto place the tickets. In either case, however, it’smuch easier for the caddy to pick up the ticketif you turn up a corner. Additionally, it’s help-

ful to be consistent in where you place thecompleted tickets.

• In pair games, leave the caddy enough room towalk down the row of tables. Players who sitfar back from the table make it difficult for thecaddy to negotiate a path through your section.

• In team games, it’s common for players to placeboards not currently in play on the floor. However, at the end of the match (especiallythe final match of the session), please returnthe boards to the table. Don’t make the caddiesstoop over to pick up all the boards.

• Be respectful to the caddies, regardless of theirage. “Please” and “thank you” go a long way.

How to be caddy-friendly

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must be identi-cal and include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequentround after convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing withthe next round and continuing until the restriction islifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at thediscretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

Tap into the NAPBy Brent Manley

Arthur Moore can still remember the scene atthe Scope Convention Center in Norfolk VA inMarch of 1979. Going into the final session of theinaugural Grand National Pairs, Bart Bramleyapproached Moore and his partner, Eric Robinson.“You’re in position,” said Bramley, a fellow NewEnglander who was also playing in the event. “Gofor it!”

Go for it they did, and the two emerged as thefirst winners of what now is the North AmericanPairs. “We weren’t leading until the end,” Moorerecalls.

At the time of their victory, Moore andRobinson lived in the Boston area. Now they are onopposite sides of the continent —- Robinson inScarsdale NY and Moore in Arcadia CA in the LosAngeles area. They haven’t played bridge togetherin more than 20 years.

That does not lessen the exhilaration they bothremember from their first major victory —and it allbegan at the club level.

New and improvedTwenty-five years later, the national event —-

which has evolved into the NAP with three separateflights —- is still a major attraction to grassrootsplayers. Qualifying games for the new, improvedNAP are scheduled for your local club in June, Julyand August this year.

To increase participation in the NAP, the ACBLhas reduced sanction fees to encourage clubs tohave more games and is allowing clubs to conducttwo NAP qualifying games per sanctioned session, per flight. That means more chances to qualify andmore opportunities to win masterpoints. Also, in theunit final, any players who qualify may play withany other qualified player in any unit in the distric.

First-place district winners in each flightreceive three nights’ lodging and airfare subsidiesto the 2005 Spring NABC in Pittsburgh. Second-place pairs in the districts receive airfare subsidies. The flights are Open, B (up to 2000 masterpoints)and C (non-Life Master with fewer than 500 MPs).

Club-level masterpoints are half red and half

black, one-session unit-level games award section-ally rated red points, and district finals award goldpoints for section tops and overall placement.

took their first steps by qualifying at a club inCambridge MA in District 25. They survived theunit and district finals, and by the time they and 103other pairs sat down to play in the two-day GNPfinal in Norfolk, more than 71,000 ACBL membershad competed for those coveted spots.

R o b i n s o n ,then studyinggovernment atH a r v a r dUniversity, wassomewhat of abridge prodigy,starting seriousplay at the age of11. He had a fewregional victoriesunder his belt.“In my highschool and col-lege years,”Robinson recalls,“I played quite a

bit.”Moore, already a practicing attorney, won a

national event before he won a regional, althoughhe did have a couple of seconds.

Both players liked the idea of the grassrootsformat. “It was much more egalitarian,” saysMoore, now a patent attorney. “It gave us thechance to win a national event —- it wasn’t like try-ing to win the Spingold.” Ironically, Moore cameclose to winning the Spingold, making it to thesemifinal round at the 1990 Summer NABC inBoston, losing to the eventual winners.

Robinson remembers the excitement of vyingfor one of District 25’s six spots in the GNP final in1979. “All the top pairs in New England were com-peting,” he says.

In the national final, the star-studded fieldwould have intimidated many players. The finalistsincluded luminaries such as Lou Bluhm, MarkMolson, Boris Baran, Sidney Lazard, Jim Jacoby,Bob Hamman, Charles Coon, Steve Becker, ChipMartel, Lew Stansby and a host of others.

Moore remembers approaching the nationalfinal with trepidation. After the first qualifying ses-sion, however, they realized they could competewith the stars. “It took a bit of getting over the jit-ters,” he says.

After the second final session, players weremilling about and waiting for the scores. Moorerecalls thinking that a pair from District 12 hadwon. When he and Robinson were announced asthe winners (by 4 matchpoints on a 25 top), Moorerecalls, “We were in heaven.”

Robinson says the thrill of winning is still hardto describe. “It was more than masterpoints andglory,” he says.

Neither Moore nor Robinson plays a lot thesedays. Both are busy with their careers. After hegraduated from Harvard, Robinson earned an MBAand law degree from Yale University, and he nowworks for a New York City law firm.

Each heartily endorses the grassroots formatand would recommend the NAP to anyone.

Transfer squeezeThis deal occurred in second-round Vanderbilt

action in the match between the squads captained byJeff Roman and Carolyn Lynch.

♠ Q 8♥ K J 2♦ J 6 4 2♣ K Q 5 3

♠ 9 7 4 ♠ J 10 6 3 2♥ 10 6 4 ♥ Q 7 3♦ K 10 7 ♦ 9 5♣ 10 9 7 4 ♣ J 8 6

♠ A K 5♥ A 9 8 5♦ A Q 8 3♣ A 2

At both tables, South declared 6NT. Jeff Romanreceived the opening lead of the ♠7 which he won indummy with the queen. A diamond to the queen held(West ducked), and Roman continued with the ♦Aand a third diamond. West took the king and contin-ued with the ♠9. Roman won the ace and took stock.

With 11 tricks assured the 12th could, of course, come from taking the straight finesse in hearts.Roman, however, elected to try for a squeeze byplaying the ♥A and a heart to the king. This strategywill work whenever an opponent is holding three ormore hearts to the queen and four or more clubs.

On the actual layout, however, neither defenderhad such a hand, so the squeeze failed. Down one.

The play at Lynch’s table began almost identi-cally (spade lead won in dummy, diamond finesse),but she also decided against the heart finesse in favorof a possible squeeze. Lynch tried a slightly differentapproach, however. She played a heart to the king, and called for dummy’s ♥J. East covered and Lynchwon the ace. This was the position:

♠ — ♥ 2♦ 6♣ K Q 5 3

♠ 4 ♠ J 10 6♥ 10 ♥ 7♦ — ♦ — ♣ 10 9 7 4 ♣ J 8

♠ K♥ 9 8♦ 8♣ A 2

When Lynch played the last diamond, West wassqueezed. He could pitch a spade, but the ♠K wouldbe the last nail in the coffin.

Lynch’s line of play transferred the threat to thedefender holding long clubs and the ♥10 instead ofthe ♥Q. Making six earned Lynch’s squad 17 IMPs.

And then there’s Diane Cullen. She hosted thelast Portland NABC and the 1998 Reno NABC.She recently lost her husband Paul, an ACBL tour-nament director, and at first she considered drop-ping off the tournament committee. But shechanged her mind and has done a mountain ofwork. “She’s the one who made this tournament,”said Cynthia Sinn, who spoke briefly about Cullen.

Neal Moore took the mike to tell about thegreat work that has been done by Sheila Wimer, tournament co-chairman. “Not only has she doneall kinds of work at the unit, district and nationallevels, she also has outstanding with newcomers. She teaches novice lessons and she has sponsorednewcomer programs at clubs. I don’t believe any-one anywhere has done more to promote newcom-er programs.”

He wasplaying with his wife Elaine, and their teammateswere Donna and Don Flanagan. “I didn’t play forabout 25 years,” said Waddell. “When I took up thegame again, I called the ACBL and they found allthe points I won 25 years ago.”

Bridge and marriageShould married couples play as partners? If

they do, what sort of talk goes on during the ridehome from the game – and later when they go tobed? The bridgetoday.com Panel Show in theCrystal Ballroom after the game tonight will featureseveral couples attempting to wrestle with theseproblems – probably in a facetious manner. MattGranovetter will be the emcee. The couples includeDonna and Chris Compton, Sheri Winestock andFred Gitelman, Martha and Ralph Katz, Yvonneand Eddie Kantar, and Jan and Chip Martel.

300 teams! At some North American Championships there

is an occasional session where fewer than 300tables are in play. Yesterday afternoon there were300 tables in play – but that was just in the knock-outs! There were 32 teams in the Bracketed, 48 inthe Seniors and 220 (!) in the Compact.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do not suf-ficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, arenot acceptable substitutes.

Zero ToleranceZero Tolerance is ACBL policy.Commendable behavior includes (but is not lim-

ited to):• Being a good “host” or “guest” at the table.• Greeting others in a friendly manner.• Praising the bidding and/or play of the opponents.• Having two clearly completed convention cards

readily available to the opponents. This is also aregulation.

Unacceptable behavior includes (but is not lim-ited to):• Badgering, rudeness, insinuations, intimidation,

profanity, threats or violence.• Negative comments concerning opponents’ or part-

ner’s play or bidding.• Gloating over good results.• Constant and gratuitous lessons and analyses at

the table.• Loud and disruptive arguing with a director’s rul-

ing.If you experience someone exhibiting discourte-

ous behavior or being other than civil, please call atournament director immediately. If you feel thatthere was a very serious breech of discipline, in addi-tion to the resolution by the tournament director atthe table, please discuss the problem directly withthe Director-in-Charge of the tournament.

Should it become necessary to call a tournamentdirector, you may simply state: “This player is inter-fering with my enjoyment of the game.”

The director will then attempt to determine thefacts. If he establishes there was unacceptablebehavior, an immediate 1/4-board disciplinarypenalty (3 IMPs in team games) shall be assigned toall offenders.

This may involve any one or all four players atthe table, regardless of who initiated the unaccept-able behavior. If both members of a partnership areguilty, the penalties are cumulative (1/4 board each =1/2 board or 3 IMPs each = 6 IMPs).

If it is determined that a second offense hasoccurred in the same event, the offender(s) shall beejected from future competition in that event.

An offender removed from an event shall bedeemed not to have played in the event, no master-points will be awarded and no refunds will be made.

In the case of a serious offense and in the case ofmultiple offenses (three) during a tournament, a dis-ciplinary committee may determine whether theoffender(s) should be allowed to play in other eventsat the tournament and/or whether additional sanc-tions may be appropriate.

While the director may issue a warning, direc-tors are strongly encouraged to give penalties and awarning should be given only when there is noclear violation, where the facts cannot be clearlydetermined or when there are mitigating circum-stances. Offenders should receive an immediatepenalty. Regardless of who may have initiatedunacceptable behavior, all offenses are punishable.Retaliatory behavior is a punishable offense.Frivolous accusations also are considered as offens-es under this policy.

The right timeto bid a minor

tricks. The opening heart lead went to dummy’s ace,and Lazard immediately called for a club. West put upthe queen and, after a bit of thought, led the ♦A andanother diamond to dummy’s 10. Lazard ruffed a club, got back to dummy with a heart ruff and trumpedanother club. After cashing the ♦K he led a spade tothe ace and ruffed a third club. The ace fell from East,so Lazard was to go to dummy’s ♠K and cash the longclub for his 11th trick.

Wolff was right in his assessment. The defense cantake four clubs and the ♦A for down one, and theywould get two chances to do so. The first opportunitywould be on the opening lead – West would have tolead a high club. The second chance would come whenWest took his ♦A.

Attendance still highTotal attendance to date is 6386 tables.

Yesterday there were 1659 tables in play – 305 inthe morning, 750 in the afternoon and 604 in theevening.

5♦ Dbl (1) Pass 5♠All Pass(1) 4 to 5 second hesitationThe Facts: Both sides agreed there was a hesi-

tation, though brief, prior to the double by West. The Director was summoned immediately after thedouble. On the ♦9 opening lead 5♠ was defeatedthree tricks, minus 300 E/W.

The Ruling: The Tournament Director deter-mined that the break in tempo in conjunction withEast’s previous bid of 4♠ established unauthorizedinformation (UI) for East. He ruled that the hesita-tion demonstrably suggested that bidding 5♠ wouldbe more successful than defending 5♦ doubled andthat pass was a logical alternative. The contract waschanged to 5♦ doubled by South, plus 550 N/S.

The Appeal: E/W were the only players toattend the hearing. They contended that 4 to 5 sec-onds did not constitute a break in tempo (BIT) forthis type of auction.

The Decision: The committee had no informa-tion as to the length of the hesitation other than“brief”. Based on the TD’s confirmation that thedouble was made after 4 to 5 seconds, the commit-tee determined that no break in tempo hadoccurred. The committee restored the table result,5♠ by West, minus 300.

1♠ Dbl Rdbl (1) 2♠4♠ Pass Pass 4NT5♠ All Pass(1) Support for spadesThe Facts: After the 4♠ call North hesitated

prior to passing. The Stop card was not used. TheDirector was called after North’s pass of 4♠. 5♠failed by one trick, minus 50 E/W.

The Ruling: North’s break in tempo (BIT)constituted unauthorized information (UI), demon-strably suggesting action when pass was a logicalalternative. The result was changed to 4♠ by West, plus 420 for E/W.

The Appeal: N/S were the only players toappear. North contended that the BIT was no morethan 20 seconds as she needed time to understandthe auction, which to this point had been rapid. When she finally realized that East still had a callcoming she passed. South felt he had no alternativeto bidding, given his strong holdings in both ofpartner’s suits. He felt the pause was no more than12 to 15 seconds. The appeal form indicated thatE/W estimated the BIT at 30 seconds.

The Decision: Despite the peculiarities andspeed of the auction, the committee determined thatNorth had paused considerably longer than neces-sary, creating UI from that BIT. The committee feltthis BIT demonstrably suggested bidding. Passwas considered a logical alternative for South, although possibly a minority action. The commit-tee changed the score to 4♠ by West, plus 420 forboth sides.

Pre-Alert/Disclosureforms

If your partnership plays special overcalls, youmust fill out a pre-Alert/Disclosure form and makeit available to your opponents when you play inevents that allow Mid-Chart and Super-Chart con-ventions.

This applies to NABC+, regional or higherknockout and Flight A Swiss games. Look for thelight blue forms on the table where conventioncards are available.

Bid Box Alerts andAnnouncements

When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests thatplayers tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at thesame time.

When making an announcement, use theannouncement word — such as “transfer” — andtap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or announces a bid shouldmake sure his opponents are aware that an Alert orannouncement has been made.
