Missing Indian mountaineer
dies after climbing Mt EverestKATHMANDU, May 22:
A 27-year-old Indian climber,who went missing on MountEverest, has died after he fell some200 metres while returning afterconquering the world's tallestpeak, the fifth fatality on themountain this season, an officialsaid today.
The body of Ravi Kumar, anative of Uttar Pradesh'sMoradabad district, was spottedby rescuers after 36 hours ofintense search.
Kumar fell from the 8,200metre altitude, which is popularlyknown as Balcony, and died, saidDinesh Bhattarai, DirectorGeneral of Department of
Tourism."Our liaison officer deputed in
Mt Everest has confirmed that hedied after he fell some 150 to 200metre down from the Balconywhile he was descending after thesummit," he told PTI.
"But it not possible to retrievethe body immediately," ChowangSherpa, managing director of ArunTreks and Expedition, said.
Balcony is the final restingspot before climbers ascend thesouth summit of the mountain.
With this, the total number ofpeople who died from the Nepalside of Mt Everest has reachedfive.
Kumar successfully climbedthe 8,848 meters high Mount
Everest at 1:28 PM on Saturday.His climbing guide LakpaWongya Sherpa was also foundunconscious after suffering fromfrostbite at Camp IV.
Kumar and the climbing guidegot separated during the descent.
Ang Tshering Sherpa, presi-dent of Nepal MountaineeringAssociation earlier had earlier saidthat "the chances of his survivalwere slim, as more than 24 hourshad elapsed since he went missingin the extreme climate".
An American and a Slovakiandied near the summit of theworld's highest peak yesterday. AnAustralian also died while theidentity of the fourth person wasnot immediately known. (PTI)
Elections to 10 RS seats cancelled; no new date announced
NEW DELHI, May 22:
The Election Commissiontoday cancelled elections to 10Rajya Sabha seats scheduled to beheld on June 8, citing a clash withthe presidential poll due in Julyand the EVM challenge beginningon June 3.
A brief statement from the ECsaid it has decided to "withdraw"the press note of May 16 announc-ing the elections to Rajya Sabhaseats from Goa, Gujarat and WestBengal.
It said it will announce freshdates "in due course".
The terms of several promi-nent faces in the Rajya Sabha,including Union minister SmritiIrani, CPM general secretarySitaram Yechury and TrinamoolCongress leader Derek O'Brien,are set to end in July and August.
The notification for the now-postponed polls was to be issuedtoday as per the May 16 pressstatement.
Out of the 10 retiring mem-
bers, four are from TrinamoolCongress, three from Congress,two from BJP and one from theCPM.
While the term of ShantaramNaik (Cong, Goa) is coming to anend on July 28, the retirement ofAhmed Patel (Cong), DilipbhaiPandya (BJP) and Irani (BJP) - allfrom Gujarat - is due on August18.
The tenure of members fromWest Bengal - O'Brien (TMC),Debabrata Bandhopadhyay(TMC), Pradip Bhattacharya(Cong), Yechury (CPM),Sukhenduhakhar Roy (TMC) andDola Sen (TMC) are also endingon August 18.
A Commission spokespersonlater clarified that the presidentialelection may coincide with theschedule of RS polls in view of thefact that secretaries of legislativeassemblies are notified as return-ing officers for RS elections andthey are also to be appointed asassistant returning officers for thepresidential election.
