Boys ClassificationDandenong Rangers 77 def. Sturt Sabres 53The Rangers begun their U14 Championships with a gritty win over the Sabres on Dandenong’s famed show court. The fast-paced game was dominated early by the Rangers and suited their style of play as they also took control inside the paint. An offensive run late in the first half helped Sturt wrestle back some of the momentum and they then connected from distance on several three-pointers in the third to trim the deficit to eight down the stretch. Dandenong were able to hold them off though and consolidated the victory late with plenty of positives to take out of the game for both sides.

Boys ClassificationNorths Bears 85 def. Alice Springs Suns 11Norths were on song from the start and did not even give Alice Springs a sniff with a 22-0 start. The Suns got on the board in the second term but were out-sized by the Bears who were silky at the offensive end in creating as many opportunities as possible.

Girls ClassificationWilletton Tigers 94 def. Alice Springs Suns 23Willetton dominated the contest from the start as they opened a 13-point lead at quarter-time and from there, they extended the margin at every break. Ella Doyle was an offensive star, finishing with 24 points although the Suns proved they could be a handful for a couple of sides in the second half with some impressive shooting from all over the court.

Girls Classification Bulleen Boomers 56 def. Cairns Dolphins 30 Tasmania’s intense defensive pressure wreaked havoc for Vic Country early and turnovers proved a problem. Keith Robinson began his domination on the glass though before finishing with 21 rebounds and he started to turn the tide for Vic Country who led by a point at three-quarter time. Fiegert then had the game tied with just over a minute remaining but Taran Armstrong proved the hero, drilling a three-pointer to finish with 22 points and claim a win for Tas.

Girls Classification Nunawading Spectres 52 def. Perry Lakes Hawks 29Yoshika Cook’s speed and passing caused headaches for the Hawks early and the Spectres took advantage inside as they built a double-digit lead by the time the half-time buzzer went. Cook found herself in foul trouble but Yasmin Spargo kept up the attack for Nunawading to hold off the best efforts of Hayley Holland as Perry Lakes fell short.

Girls Gold Coast Waves 55 def. Newcastle Hunters 40The Blaze were able to use their height to punish Newcastle inside from the opening tip as Skye Mason controlled the paint and while the Hunters had a healthy range of scorers and were never truly out of the contest, that Gold Coast front court proved the difference in an entertaining opening.

GirlsDiamond Valley Eagles 71 def. Joondalup Wolves 38It was a tight contest through the opening term with Diamond Valley only gaining a slight edge but with the offence picking up in the second term, the Eagles began to pull away with the tempo of the contest suiting them. Eight players ended up scoring 5+ points with their bench proving to be a major factor in the consummate win.

GirlsCanberra Capitals 43 def. North West Tasmania Devils 24Pushing the ball up the floor and also connecting from distance, the Capitals looked strong from the outset but the Devils’ aggressive style of play meant they did not fall too far behind. Converting on the scoreboard was the biggest obstacle for them and when North West Tasmania fell into foul trouble, Canberra were able to finish the game from the free-throw line as they won every quarter.

BoysWilletton Tigers 70 def. Sutherland Sharks 57In front of a raucous crowd, the Tigers and Sharks put on a thrilling and fast-paced display with an early edge for the Tigers ultimately proving to be the difference. Both teams played fairly but aggressively with some fierce battles inside as well as impressive long-range shooting and while Sutherland were always within striking distance, Willeton were able to hold firm for the victory.

Boys Bulleen Boomers 57 def. Brisbane Capitals 41Daniel Poelsma showcased his inside-outside game to lead the Boomers to an early lead over the Capitals while his frontcourt partner Marcel Haj also proved hard to stop in the paint and in combination with their defence, Bulleen were too good. Nazar Angallo starred for the Capitals though and ensured future oppositions will be wary of the boys from the north.

Boys North Adelaide Rockets 68 def. Newcastle Hunters 37A high energy start was personified by Mitchell Searle’s effort on the offensive glass as he created more chances for Rockets team mates like Carlos Mendoza to open up a half-time lead. While the game’s pace slowed down in the second half, something that suited the Hunters, North Adelaide could not be slowed as they continued to extend their lead up until the final buzzer.

Boys Cairns Marlins 63 def. Darwin Cyclones 47Kane Runnalls and Reagan Crees proved hard for Darwin to stop in the front court with Crees’ inside scoring in particular a feature of a dominant first half for the Marlins. Anthony Rowse endeavoured to lead a Cyclones fight back and Darwin came close to causing an upset a couple of times but the Marlins were able to consolidate a strong start to run home with the win.

GirlsSouth West Metro Pirates 42 def. by Ballarat Rush 54An even game from the outset, the Pirates’ momentum was halted for a couple of minutes and while they maintained their composure on the court, it proved the difference as Ballarat pounced to open up a healthy advantage which they maintained until the final siren despite the best efforts of South West Metro.

BoysHawthorn Magic 62 def. Illawarra Hawks 42Tough defence from Illawarra showed they are a strong team this tournament but Hawthorn’s efficient offence was able to break down their set-ups and the duo of Guy Chalfon and Denzel Timmons were magnificent for the Magic, combining for 31 points as they led the Magic to an opening day win.

Boys Canberra Gunners 56 def. South Tasmania Kangaroos 54Both teams went to work from the opening tip and were impressive at both ends of the floor, not giving the opposition an inch. Canberra owned a lead in the first half but the Kangaroos were making them earn it courtesy of a couple of three-pointers. Late in the game, South Tasmania had a chance to equal the score from the free-throw line but costly misses proved the difference as the Gunners won a thriller.

Boys Norwood Flames 75 def. Rockingham Flames 32Pushing the ball at every chance, Norwood made the most of the early running and their deadly transition game translated into a double-digit advantage. Their long passes unlocked the Rockingham defence with Dash Kimber lighting it up. The Flames showed off at times with their own transition but could not reel in the deficit.

Boys Geelong Supercats 55 def. Mackay Meteors 54 Tyrese Jones made his way inside for some great lay-ups to get Mackay going but Geelong’s big man Billy Dawson asserted an inside presence himself to ensure this game would go down to the wire. The sides traded baskets in an exciting finish but with under 15 seconds remaining, Dawson knocked down the winning free throws to cap a star performance for the big man and give the Supercats the victory.

GirlsSydney Comets 62 def. Eltham Wildcats 50Tenayah Logan and Tara Kalivitis impressed for Sydney at the offensive end and their early success put Eltham on the back foot. GirlsSturt Sabres 35 def. by Dandenong Rangers 49An electrifying start from both teams did not necessarily translate to the scoreboard but after the Rangers only led by a point at quarter-time, they increased the pace in the second term and extended their lead to four at the main break. Boys Sydney Comets 54 def. Eltham Wildcats 48Wildcat Brody Glenn more than made up for his height with his ability to score and his enthusiasm on the court got the whole crowd cheering for him but the Comets were able to match them inside as the teams went into three-quarter time tied at 40.
